I had a brand new Bosch mechanical temp gauge still in the packaging (who knows how long I've had that laying around). Installed it in the head and am running a 190* temp consistently after about a 15 minute drive, seems about right to me.

Rod, your phot appears to show what I always suspected, that small gear is always in contact with the ring gear and the connection happens inside the starter case. The Phaeton is still available with a fire house price of 27,000.00, great price on a great desirable car.
