Re: Harbor Freight jack stands
We are an automotive society, used to machine and equipment exposure and usage. A person in a country that has almost no exposure to these until very recently can stand at a machine all day and not know what is being produced, any defects that might be present, or missing items. And not care. A soci...

Re: Rock Maple spokes and fellows
Invariably when a car changes hands prior maintenance records and knowledge of the vehicle is lost down the line. Substituting an off-standard type of spoke could and probably would cause safety issues down the road for someone else. ''Fixing it my way'' is a temptation few of us can refuse, but a 1...

That damage is a puncture. Enlarge the photo and you will see the edge of the brace is nicked. Fatigued sheet metai will crack, but a rigidly riveted area will loosen and crack thru a rivet hole if the rivets become loose. A slight bend that works back and forth will fatigue and crack ALONG THE BEND...

Modern flat sheet safety glass in 1/4'' is very common for 18 wheelers, buses, etc. 3/16'' laminated sheet is available for coolers and food service equipment. Even though the glass is laminated safety it is not DOT approved and does not have the proper markings that the DMV's look for. A 1/4'' glas...

Re: Repair of brass headlights
Is the brass split at the bent area? Annealing the brass will soften it to where it can be worked. Old brass is difficult to deal with as it tends to crack with age. Extreme care must be taken around solder joints. I dropped a lamp and ran over it, crushing the lamp door. By annealing it I was able ...

A combination of low valve spring pressure, low engine RPM and low operational mileage adds up to make any cam replacement not really necessary, unless the lobes are worn down badly. If the engine runs good I'd take my chances with the valves and let it all ride. My 2 cents worth.

This looks like the axle gear retainer had worn enough to allow the axle shaft to pull out of the gear. Putting a side load (turning a corner) caused the axle, wheel, drum etc to pull outwards putting enough pressure on the housing rivets to cause them to shear. As soon as the axle housing tube pull...

If you have an extra spindle nut you can cut a couple of thin slots about 1/4'' deep across the back of the nut. Clean any dust and debris from the nut and thread her on with a drop of oil. Works just like a die or thread chaser.

Get a gallon of black acrylic enamel, fast reducer (thinner), and a pint of spot hardener( sets up quickly). Get your car ready. On a still morning roll it outside on a clean tarp.
