When you install triple gears on the new flywheel make sure to allow adequate clearance so the bushings don't seize when they warm up. This happened in my engine - two pins twisted right out, one bushing seized so the gear spun on the bushing. Before you ask, NO, I did not assemble the transmission....

Re: New T owner looking for some advice

I have a 1917 - I added the starter but of course, the block is not cast to accommodate a generator. I chose to go with a John Regan magneto charger. It's simply a diode and a light bulb connecting the battery and mag post on the battery box. John produced a nice little circuit board that does the j...

My grandparents didn't pass the torch....the kids were the only ones in the family to drive when they bought their first car, a 1917 Model T. Grandpa was born in 1860 so was 57 at the time....he and my grandmother never learned to drive.

I like the pitcher hanging from the side of number three. It looks like the car was parked under a tree where birds liked to roost..... surprising how much abuse Model T's took and so many survived until today.

John is sooo correct. It's the way of the world now. We must adapt to the new reality. I ordered a SCAT from Langs back in June..... Re: Coil Box rebuild

Tim, One of the problems that has confounded Model T owners for the last century is a poor-running car due to the formation of carbon tracks in the wood of coil boxes. Several of my friends have had that problem. Even if you put new wood in yours the problem may occur down the road. Do a search - mu...

Your nearest club contact is in Ferrisburgh
Green Mountain T’s
c/o Ralph Shepard <mayo_shep@msn.com>
Ferrisburgh, VT 05456-9872

I strongly recommend making contact with other Model T owners. They can be a great source of advice and parts.

Re: Odd spark

Carbon tracks once established are pretty much impossible to remove. Snyders sells a plastic replacement kit for coil boxes. Save your old contacts...they're typically a better material. I've found that doubling up the contacts (one original, one new) will help prevent them bending with use.

You need an "old time" radiator shop. Not all shops are actually equipped to do such repairs..... radiators have become "throw-aways!"

Berg's Radiator neck

Has anyone figured out a way to secure the neck on a Bergs "black" radiator so it can support a motometer? Mine came off twice before I gave up and just use a cap. The Bergs neck is just soldered on - no mechanical attachment.

I skimmed the prior responses so forgive me if I restate something already mentioned. I use Shell Rotella 15W40 non-synthetic, detergent oil. In a new engine detergent oil is fine and will help to keep it clean. If an engine is worn and has never had detergent oil then you should probably stick with...

New Day - Tip Top Timers (Spokane Valley, WA) makes excellent replacement brushes although they cost a bit more than those from the vendors. If you want to use the original brush (assuming it's not too worn) make sure the spring has enough tension. The roll pin should be at the top of the slot in th...

Re: Timer Brush Installation

Consider installing a modern press-in camshaft seal. After removing the felt, clean with solvent before installation. Some guys use a small amount of Ultra black to secure it. As mentioned before, you can then discard the brass shield.

Listen to Jerry - there is nothing holding the studs in place that secure the wishbone ball to the pan. Wire the studs together so they can't turn.
If corrosion has thinned the wall of the wishbone tubes too much they might bend at an inopportune time. When in doubt, replace!

You might want to consider sending your coils out to be checked and adjusted. Other than that, the switch is certainly suspect. I didn't see any photos of the timer brush - I'm curious as to it's condition.
