Placement of speedometer head

Are there any photos or dimensions telling me where to install the speedometer head on a two piece firewall (early 1912)?

The hole for the cable has already been drilled in the floorboard so that sets the horizontal position. Im looking for info re the vertical placement.

The only concern with using mounting pads is they lift the body a bit and may cause misalignment when securing the firewall to the frame. Rough surfaces will tear up lining before the metal surface smooths out. Think about transmission drums.
I've chewed up transmission linings by not filing and sanding smooth after turning on a lathe. I would get the brake drum surfaces as smooth as I could.

Re: What have you done to your Model T in September?

Keith I'm hoping you can get another crankshaft ground to the sames specs as the broken one and not have to disturb your rods and mains much. Mabe just light fitting with Timesaver. Erik Barrett has a whole bunch of good crankshafts. I've has good luck using Carl Grindstaff in Redding to grind T cra...

Re: What have you done to your Model T in September?

I know I've probably posted too much about my 1912 roadster but I am celebrating g a 20 year effort (on and off) to complete this restoration. Today I finished. Still have to bring the car to Ernie Romero next Spring for a top and waiting to meet with Russ Furstnow at Tulare for help with the speedo...

Re: What have you done to your Model T in September?

Thanks for the input. I considered silver solder but opted for a mechanical repair. I the other end comes apart, I'll go with silver solder because ther is no way to install a screw.

Your observation prompted me to use Loctitie.I think there is enuf thread engagement to hold things togther.

Re: Brass windshield bumpers

I've puchased some rubber bumpers ans wish to attach them with screws. Im thinking of screwing them into the bottom horizontal frame just inside the clamps on the outer edged of the firewall. Here's the rub. I have a Speedway Motors windshield frame and don't know if the slugs on the bottom curved c...

Re: What have you done to your Model T in September?

Repaired a broken horn bulb bracket. Langs says the soldered joint often breaks. Mine did. I saw no sense In resoldering so I did a mechanical repair with a 10 32 machine screw and a small copper washer using blue Loctote to hold things tight.

Re: 1912 commercial roadster

I don't have any pictures but considered replacing the rear seat with some railing. Mr. Mari, the fellow who recently made the cast iron stoves for 1912 carburetors, was making very nice looking railing from brass tubing. If you search the net I think you can finds photos of what I'm talking about. ...

Decided to go with the eBay mirrors after David's favorable review and seeing a photo of them installed on a car with windshield rods. Thanks for your help David.

Re: Wtb mirror

Thanks for the info David. I'm seriously considering buying two for my car. I want to make sure I can set the mirrors high enuf on the lower windshield frame to screw into the slugs and still clear the windshield rods. Matt thanks for the tip. I gave Norm a buzz and he's checking his inventory to se...

Re: Looking for Stevens Front Axle tool owners

Dan what do you charge for doing both forks top and bottom and refacing the thrust surfaces?
I just did one side on an axle in the car and it took me 3 plus hours.

Thanks for all the helpful information. Steve Tomaso was kind enough to offer me a set of NORS sill plates which I am purchasing. They are the skinny type with a checkerboard background and Ford logo

All vendors are out of stock and it's unlikely more will be reproduced. If someone has dimensions, location of screw holes, etc I could make something to protect the sills.

Brass door strips

Been thru Langs cataloge and can't find the brass door strips that are used on 1912 cars to cover the front compartment threshold. Did I miss something? Are these available?

Wtb mirror

Looking for a decent mirror to mount on my 1912 roadster windshield. Not interested in the cheap round ones available today from the parts houses. If anyone has Vintique rectangular mirror they would be willing to part with I'd certainly be interested

Interested in your reasoning why you wouldn't use an axle with a second keyway and why no part of an axle should be welded.

Re: weld repair on axle by the keyway

Curious why you say that Jerry. While a new keyway weakens the axle some, I wouldn't think it serious enough to cause failure on today's roads. Welding runs a risk of making the stub brittle. Not knowing what the axles are made of, that's just a concern not a fact. But still a risk a breakage. Your ...
