Re: FOR SALE: 1920s STERLING FIRETRUCK HANDCRANK SIREN-GREAT SHAPE-SUPER LOUD!

Yes, they are loud! I have one I cranked up one New Years Eve in my old neighborhood--lots of shady folks around the area. We heard some hootin' and hollerin' and a few shots rang out, then I cranked up this puppy and silence for a few minutes! Apparently I scared at the rascals!

Re: Engine hood leather

I would suggest you get a sharp, thin putty knife and "slip" it under the leather (between hood metal and leather) to free it from the paint and likely rust under the leather. Then slip it under the retaining metal to free it from it and the rust that is likely under there. It won't be easy, but you...

Re: cost of nickel plating radiator outer shell and headlight buckets

Lots of good information here--I should emphasize that you do NOT want Bright Nickel plating. It is designed to be under chrome, and was developed to reduce the plating steps--it comes out of the tank bright and doesn't need to be polished before the chrome layer goes on. It is also much thinner tha...

Re: SP-4274 over Donner Pass

Brent, Cab-Forwards were not allowed on the Siskiyou line. Tunnel 13 at the summit has quite a crown in it, going from upgrade to downgrade very quickly. If you had a normal level of water in the glass going up the hill, it would dip out of site going down the hill. Lack of water on the crown sheet ...

I think you are correct. AFAIK, the cab forwards were used only on the west coast, and I don't think they ran much farther east then Sparks, Nevada. Big engine, requiring large turntable or a wye to turn around. I know they went into Oregon quite often, but don't know how far north they were used. T...

Jeff, One of my long-term projects is a M-P like yours. Mine was a complete car left out to rot. It was on a '26 chassis and there are M-P pieces to mate to the later hood. But Jim's question is about a '27 ROADSTER--completely different animal than a coupe. I haven't looked at an "improved" body, but the earlier ones fastened the upholstery and the light spring back unit to the belt molding wood that the top also attaches to. A much simpler arrangement.
