Rub marks on magnets mystery

I have an engine apart to replace the clutch plates and brake drum. Just noticed these rub marks on the magnets. They are 5.25” off center. I’ve looked extensively at the area of the mag ring and see nothing that has been causing this interference. The oil pipe is intact and is 4.5” off centerline. ...

You can do it with the hogs head in place, but it’s far from “easy”. They tend to snag just before popping up from the deep. Many new cuss words can be learned, etc. A heavy wire, bent just so, with a hook on the end helps to pull that them thru that sticky spot. Keeping them round is very unlikely ...

The easiest way is to just choke a nylon sling under the oil pan and cinch it between #3 and #4. If you need more tilt, move it closer to #3.

Thanks, John. I did buy the top from them back in the springtime and didn’t mention it at that time. The old top was severely shrunken and getting very hard to use. I’m hoping that the visible curve in the bottom edge in that picture is due to it having shrunk and wasn’t made that way years ago.

Re: Sure Stop Disc brakes with Left-side Rux shifter

Craig, your post is exactly what I needed. The pictures show the location of the shaft and I understand the benefits of modifying the shifter the way you did. On my other car, the shaft is located aft of where you put it and would lie directly over the master cylinder. I’m liking how you did it. Tha...

That’s pretty much what I was picturing. The pillow blocks touching each other and clock the “U” bend just so.

Sure Stop Disc brakes with Left-side Rux shifter

How are you guys overcoming the left-side Ruckstell shifter shaft interference with the master cylinder? I’m chewing on it right now and am considering mounting a second parking brake lever behind the original one to weld the Rux quadrant to, upright, rather than downward. Any possible solutions wou...

Replacing the Handbrake Lever Spring…

Sure seems like one of those easy tasks to check off your list in short order on a rainy day. Well, it isn’t. I did one, for the first time, this afternoon, and must say that it took a good 50% of my mechanical ingenuity along with about 4 hours of my afternoon to accomplish. The result was perfect,...

Ruckstell Left Side Housing (only) FS

I have a perfectly good left side housing for sale. It needs to have a left tube stub installed into it. You could probably send it out to Chaffins and have them do that for you. $100 plus shipping. Located in Mays Landing, NJ. Best to text me at (609) 289-0677 . I can send you pictures of it that w...

I was considering doing as Alan suggested, but after seeing the beautiful alignment jig that Les uses, I decided to just go ahead a spend the million to get a new one from Chaffins, ready to install. I will be selling the housing that I have. Someone could probably send it out to Chaffins and have a...

Re: Ruckstell Housing

Thanks, Les. I'm now leaning toward ordering a new small drum left side housing from Chaffins. I see that this one was originally drilled and riveted in the wrong position. The left side radius rod holes don't line up because the axle tube it clocked slightly out of whack. Getting this straight, as ...

Ruckstell Housing

Would anyone know if the rear housings are made of cast iron or are they cast steel? I have a loose tube on a Rux housing, even after replacing all of the rivets. I’m now considering welding the tube to the end of the casting. The other option is to upsize the 1/4” rivets to 5/16”…

Car trailer stuff

I just bought a new NEO enclosed single-car trailer and finally have it after a 3 month build wait. Have any of you guys mounted “over-center” motorcycle front wheel chocks in your trailers. I’ve been hauling T’s for many years now and the Condor Trailer-Only SC2000 is really catching my eye. It’s a...

Re: Using Ospho

I use a lot of Ospho in my fabricating shop and whenever repainting a trailer or other steel items. I apply it with a typical pump-up sprayer for spraying round-up, cleaners or whatever. Warm temperatures definitely matter. It doesn't react at all under maybe 60 degrees. I wire brush the surface, sp...

WTB steel parts kit for a wood pickup bed

Does anyone have or know of a place to buy the necessary steel parts for making a wooden pickup bed? A buddy wants to make one up and use old wood. The vendors seem sell the complete kit only.

You nailed it, Scott! Posting links is a little above my pay grade. I fix stuff. Sharing a YouTube link is about as high tech as it gets. That’s why I had included the date at which it had appeared. Magneto recharge in Car

We just did an in-vehicle mag recharge in a buddy’s car using Tom Carnegie’s method as he outlined in a March 26, 2015 post. I’ve done the compass way multiple times in the past but definitely like Tom’s the most by far. The outcome was excellent. Car now hand-crank starts on mag beautifully. Thanks!

In New Jersey, only certain Motor Vehicle Agency’s are able to issue Historic (QQ) tags. You will need to contact Trenton and ask which one is nearest to you. In Southern NJ, it is the Runnemeade office. As long as you have a signed title for the vehicle ( out of state or in state) it is a painless ...

Just whipped up this sleeve installation tool to help me put the new one onto the shaft when it arrives. It has an old sleeve welded to the inside of the guide tube. The inner leading edge of the old one is relieved. The new sleeve sits in the tool with a half inch exposed in order to watch the guid...
