Re: One coil buzzes constantly

I had this happen on my 1911 once and i can say from experience that you should never ever attempt to crank an engine by hand with a coil that is always buzzing. It will fire early and mule kick you every single time. Dangerous stuff. In my case the clearance for the timer rod is very close on an ea...

Re: Adjusting spark coils by sound

It was always my understanding that this was how the phrase “tune up” came into the popular lexicon of automotive language. Since the coils produce a pronounced pitch the thought was that making them all produce the same pitch produced a better running engine. This was especially true of the heinze ...

Re: who solders brass for repairs?

These reproduction brackets fail frequently due to the poor joining to the base plate and because the post section is much taller than on the original part and thus is easy to put under bending stress when bumped into. I suggest you shorten the post by half before you silver solder it back to the ba...

Steve, we had a guy in our club that straightened tons of manifolds. He put them in a bucket of sand before they cooled and this kept them from cracking. Worked every time.

Re: Heinze Coils - An Inferior Design; OR Did History Get it Wrong!

My experience running heinze coils has been very good. I ran them for years in my 1911 torpedo and never opened the box. They simply ran well, started great and never needed attention. Perhaps the reputation largely stems from owners constant fiddling with coils during the active life of these cars....

All 1915 cars have that hole. All cars had a round head slotted bolt with a nut on the back side.

The bowery boys 14 touring

Every time I see a bowery boys picture I wonder who ended up with their 1914 jalopy. I believe the series ended in 1955-56 and it seems unlikely that the car was not moved on to a collector. Does anyone in the LA area have knowledge of where the car went after the mid fifties. Seems like a pretty im...

Go to your local hardware store and ask for shovel handle rivets. They should have them in a jandorf box somewhere. These work great for felloe plate rivets on early wheels.

It has been ten years now and perhaps we need a reminder of the dangers of aftermarket chassis parts that are not made of the same materials that ford used in their parts. It is often said of people “he can fix anything”. With Don it was true. He once took a bobcat that was burned in a fire and rebuilt it. The hydraulic valves had melted so he made new ones like it was nothing. My early 1909 rear axle had the driveshaft mounting flanges torn away. He made fixtures to ...

When i first plumbed my 1914 touring, i lit the headlights and had a flame at the burner, below the burner and outside of the lamp! Well said Erik Barrett. Thirty years and over 50k miles on kevlar linings in my 15 touring (including new York to Seattle 2009) has proven to me that they do not effect drums in any adverse way. To suggest that a kevlar band would cause that crack or excessive wear is misleading and not accurate. I have taken apart many engines with this same drum failure that never saw a modern band lining. It happened with cotton back then, and it (cracks)can happen now regardless of band material. The ex...

We have installed well over 100 tops over the past 25 years. The dimensions in the model t ford owner book are in fact for the 1915-22 top and are very useful. The extra bolts into the cowl above the coil box is a dead giveaway that this is a 1917 or later body that has had a 15-16 hood former scabbed onto it. This car has no true 15-16 features and is likely a 17 model that has been back dated to look like a 16 model.

The arguement that kevlar cuases drum failure simply does not hold up.
