Re: 12 Volt reading on my 6 volt ammeter

As Pat says, your Ford ammeter will only read up to 20A, even if your alternator generates more, which it probably is. And as he says, you need to find out why. Modern alternators can produce over 100A, and even small ones manage 30A or 40A. With that sort of current, something somewhere must be get...

If you are asking in connection with Model T coils, the important parameter is what is termed dv/dt. By 1922, Ford's Trafford Park, Manchester factory was fairly self-sufficient, and it supplied the mainland Europe territories (while Canada supplied overseas Empire markets), so I believe that most of these crates would have come Manchester via a ship canal to Liverpool.

A couple of points: 1. Some friction is good. It provides damping to stop the wobble instability that Ts tend to suffer at about 12 mph. I think one of your spindles is too loose. 2. tightening the top of the spindle will give you a bit more friction, but then when you tighten the bottom lock nut, i...

Assuming your Coupe is 6v, you might find advantages in fitting 12v turn and brake lights and a small 12v battery as used in alarms.
12v bits are cheaper, more plentiful. Of course, it all has to be LEDs. The battery will then last for months between recharges.

Replacing 2-piece valves is a good idea, but first, look down the oil filler (with a light) at the cam gear while someone else slowly turns the crank. I think you might see the gear 'jump' when it clicks. You might even be able to feel it with a finger on it.

The clicks are heard every half-turn of the crank so it's likely that for each pair of valves there is a point where the loads from the springs down through the followers onto the lobes drive the camshaft across the gear backlash and cause a click. Not a problem unless the backlash is very large.

Two English Fords above.
One in the 3.37 batch with a flatbed. Registered in Bradford (AK)
Another at 3:39

Was the gruesome scene at 3:41 staged for the camera? The 'victims' appear clean and unbloodied.

What is or was Wascally Wabbit?????

The FORD factory is the SE corner of the Trafford Park, Manchester factory where Fords were built from 1911 to 1930. As you can see from the doors, it was a former tram depot.

Re: The shimmy shimmy shake.

At the speed this occurs it will not be balance or eccentricity. It's lack of damping (friction). The usual fix is to tighten the spindle bolts just a little to add a bit of friction. But don't overdo it, and it's necessary that there is no vertical float of the stub axles in the axle forks. If ther...

A cotter pin is a tapered pin with a nut on the thin end used to fix a lever on a shaft - most commonly on older bicycle pedals.

We stop nuts unscrewing with split pins, but only after tightening them with a spanner.

In addition to all the other apron and wood issues, I suggest that before you start to assemble things, get the mounting studs higher by running down the nuts - with washers below if required - to get the bars about halfway up the frame. Stop them going back down by putting small pieces of wood belo...

Re: A bit of era information from 100 years ago

All Ts built in Trafford Park for the UK had RHD hogsheads with starters from 1922 - when they had finally sorted the steering conflict. I presume that Canadian Ts for the British Empire (Australia, NZ, India etc) were the same. I have also read that Canada had previously implemented its own solutio...

Re: 'Skipping Cylinder' or 'Is This Safe?'

One other thought; do you advance your timing after starting, and is it set so that it sparks just ATDC when the lever is 'up'?
And are you running it on magneto?
If running on 6v battery, you need a lot of advance.

Re: 'Skipping Cylinder' or 'Is This Safe?'

The best way to find the bad cylinder is to take the top off the coil box, run at a slightly fast idle, then stop cyls 2 and 3 by stopping the points on the two centre coils with your fingers, then do the same but with 1 and 4 - the outer coils. If all's well, you hear a 2-cylinder engine on each te...

I would like to find a source for 6:1 cast iron head. I don't want an aluminum head on my car! Years ago, I purchased a Giant Power head for my car. What a disappointment! The choke air valve is 6256. The wire from the front of the rad hooks to the top of the outer lever; the bottom of the inner lever is linked by another wire to a sleeve around the dashboard rod. A tiny split pin stops the sleeve's downward freedom so when the knob on the dash is pulled, it pulls the...

Re: Advise needed on ignition problem

The coil box may be damp and conducting the sparks from coils 1 and 4 to ground. With it running on 2 cylinders, do the other two coils fire? You can safely touch the contacts and feel them move. If they are all moving, it may well be damp wood. If not, look at the timer, coil box contacts and wiring.

Re: Deck Lid Support Arm Metal Gauge

My 26 Coupe has the strut bolted to a U-shaped piece that attaches by 2 small bolts to the side flange of the lid. Flattened out, it would be a T shape about 2" wide and maybe 2.5" high. I made a new one that puts the strut pivot further from the lid so as to raise the open lid to improve access.

I have a suspicion that the hard material does not extend all the way down to the steel/brass backing. I have found that very thin points I have smoothed and polished can rapidly deteriorate and become burnt.

Can anyone confirm or contradict that?

My 26 T works fine as follows: From the timer, the rod goes upwards/across for about 2" and then curves over and down - but NOT back - to a point below the inboard edge of the water hose upper clip. It's always in front of the auxiliary oil line fitting. Then it turns back and up to the control rod ...

The mystery for me is why the system was not dropped in 1919 when the 6v starter and generator were added. A single coil and distributor would have saved $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ (and a lot of fun for us now.)
