Re: 12 Volt reading on my 6 volt ammeter
An alternator rated at 50 amps (for instance) can deliver 50 amps for some period of time without damage. Most alternators can deliver about 1/4 or more of their rated output at engine idle. If you start a car with a partially discharged battery and turn on the lights and heater, the charge rate mig...

You might see what is available in a gasoline heater. They were used in the 1920s and 1930s, and could put out a lot of heat. I think they may still be available in some form. Re: 12 Volt reading on my 6 volt ammeter
Voltage is not an issue with an ammeter. The problem with a stock type T ammeter is that it only reads to 20 amps +-, and your alternator is probably capable of 40 amps or more. Higher current probably won't hurt the ammeter, within reason, but you need a ammeter that can read higher current if you ...

If you are using a high volume auxiliary oiler, the # 1 cylinder may get more oil than the rest, especially at low speed and load or idling. Oil level too high will cause the same thing. Be sure you are not over-filling the crankcase with oil. Halfway between the lower and upper drain cocks is best. This usually takes between 3 and 31/2 quarts. Check oil with the engine warm and the car sitting on a level surface. Be sure both drain cocks are clear.

A heavier T flywheel assembly will give much smoother operation and more available low speed torque. That's general advice. Refer to Ford specs for specifics. In my opinion, .003 is too tight for exhaust valves, and about right for intake. Guides that are too tight will lead to sticking valves as the engine warms up. Too much guide clearance allows the valves to slide on the seats and allows oil consumption and noise. Too much exhaust valve guide clearance also allows the valve to run hotter. Most oil consumption occurs at intake valv...

Re: Profit on each Model T
Packard used to put out a lot of material for salesmen and dealers and mechanics. It makes good reading, and the principles expounded are still valid today. www.packardinfo.com offers access to a huge library of this material, and similar Ford material is available on this and other sites.

Re: Profit on each Model T
Ford made money on cars by making every effort to sell each of a great many cars for a little more than they cost him to produce. Successful car dealers followed a similar formula: High sales volume with low mark-up per unit. In recent decades, government has far more to say about what motor vehicle...

Re: Reamer lubricant, water- or oil-based?
Old-fashioned oil-based thread cutting oil ought to work.
If you hit a sand inclusion in the block, it wouldn't matter much what lubricant you used.
I'd guess water-base lubricants are meant for modern, insert-type cutting tools. Tool steel cutters probably work best with an oil base lube.

If you want to run the 5 to 30 volt LED type lights off a Ford magneto, adding a small battery and a rectifier to charge the battery from the magneto would be advantageous. I'd use a 12 volt, non-spill, riding mower size battery. Adding the battery will provide ample and stable voltage and current t...

Some 1926 Ts had the headlights mounted on forged stalks. Some '26 and most all '27s had the headlights mounted on a crossbar, of which there were 2 types. Many '27 Ts had a "vaporizer" carburetor and manifold assembly. I'm sure there are other differences. Wire wheels began to appear in the '26-'27...

Good point. The gutter might need restriction orifices on the front two dips. A good auxiliary oiler would assure plenty of oil.

If you can easily spin the motor with the hand crank (Key OFF), it indicates that your clutch is releasing normally. Battery cables should be about the diameter of a penny, and should be thick copper, not thick plastic over skinny copper. ALL connections must be clean and tight, and the engine must ...

Re: Just conversation. Why tube in lower radiator hose line?
Lower hoses are prone to collapse on pump systems ... especially if the thermostat is removed or the radiator clogged or both. Thermosyphon systems lack the ability to produce a negative pressure anywhere in the system, and they do indeed require free flowing plumbing, radiators, and water jackets a...

They could be reproduced in cast aluminum or pressed steel. I've thought of adding a drain to each dip, but leakage could be an issue. Deeper sumps with a gutter and a single drain port would be best.

A TT could carry a water tank. This looks like it has no tank, so I'd guess it's a T. The suction line appears to be connected directly to the pump, rather than to a tank or manifold.

Re: Just conversation. Why tube in lower radiator hose line?
A lower hose that was too long to begin with might buckle and collapse, especially if soluble oil or brake fluid was added to the coolant. Generally, hydrostatic pressure would tend to keep a softened lower hose open, and the thermosyphon flow rate would be exceedingly unlikely to collapse the hose,...

A clean T engine can run much farther than 200 miles on a fresh oil fill. 1,000 miles should be no problem at all with an engine that is broken in and driven normally. I drive mine father than that, more like 1500 to 1800 miles. (With an air filter and a transmission screen, using 10W30 full synthet...

Re: Just conversation. Why tube in lower radiator hose line?
Metal pipe is durable, and it adds a few square inches of heat-dissipating surface to the cooling system. The surface area of a pipe is a little over 3 times its diameter X its exposed length. A metal section in the upper radiator hose will be more effective at dissipating heat than one in the lower...

(Key OFF) ... If you open the carb adjustment 1 1/4 turns off the seat and hold the choke closed as you crank the engine for several turns, gasoline should drip from the carburetor. If it does not, you have a fuel or carburetor issue. If it does drip gasoline, release the choke, set the throttle abo...

I think it's difficult to get a "dual fire" plug to actually fire to both ground electrodes under operating conditions. There are almost always small differences in the gap or electrode profile that will allow one electrode to fire at a lower voltage than the other. That is the electrode that will f...

Re: Ferrules
I've seen a lot of copper line break at the ferrule or get necked down at the ferrule, constricting flow. The nuts sometimes split or flare out, too. I'd avoid using that type connection on anything automotive. They give enough trouble on things like ice makers and swamp coolers.
