As a kid, I was told backing keep oil in the dipper troughs. The wheel wobble while backing, would make me thing there is a camber issue.

In the old days, a loose fit would be tighten by knurling a new bearing with a sharp center punch. Easy to do, lay the half’s on a vice or anvil and peck all over. You should obtain interference fit.

With the block in that condition, I don’t think a new manifold will help. This may seem crazy, but what about grind some on the block— maybe an eight and the rest on the manifold, to where it fits. One more thing, I save old babbitt for tinning, lay a connecting rod on its side and pour the channel with babbitt. This make’s just the right size sticks sticks for rubbing on what you want tinned.

When I was a kid in the 50s, I pumped gas one tine from a visible gas pump. It was a lot of work to get 10 gallons up so it could be drained out, but a memory that has lasted a lifetime.

Built this jig years back. The cores must have rough mating surfaces imo if they don’t look as if it’s a fresh break on each half the shells are no good. Here’s the jig I use, then chuck the bearing and cut it to fit the camshaft in a lathe. I’m at 903-824-1949 if you have questions.

If you have a lathe or a friend with one it easy to make brass thimbles of any weight needed. If you need a lot of weight they can have straight sides.

Where did the automobile come from? The drop front axel is a major clue as to the quality we are looking at, on top of everything else! I built cabinets for years. Closed the shop around 2005. Had an inventory of red oak, white oak, maple, poplar, walnut, ash etc. The ash was the only lumber the bugs got into. Down in the stack they turned it into powder. Don’t think I could use ash in a car.

It is perfectly fine to start your automobile on the Mag, in fact theoretically you have more cranking amps to the starter.

Just a thought, feel of the bolt holes in the pan, if they are raised up, take a small ball-peen and tool them flat. Light strokes worked best for me.

You might clean the hole out very clean, use a bottom hole tap to cut the threads as deep as possible, clean the hole again then use an all thread—7/16 -14 bottomed out in the hole with a nut. With the horn in place I don’t think it would be very noticeable If cut flush with the nut.

Look at the flywheel ring gear! In my opinion the missing insulation is the nat sitting on the trunk of the elephant in the room. The much bigger problem, are the teeth worn so much on the flywheel. And what all that metal in the oil has done to the babbitt. ???

Make sure the horizontal of the ear measures the same distance from the lip of the on both sides. If not the engine will set at a slight angle. Care to guess how I know?

I put the bearing in a vice horizontal with the split up and down. Take the blade off a hacksaw or coping saw thread it through the bearing and reattach it to the saw. This is after the bearing is milled to size. Now cut down to the split, turn the bearing 180* and cut the other side. It should fall...

I’m with Frank,miss matched rim and felloe. I don’t think you could ever stretch stretch the felloe that far with spokes. Do the other wheels have this problem? After you get the plate off, screw the plug in from the inside, it gives a good surface to strike to restore the pan. A one inch diameter dowel about a foot long, makes a good drift for the job.

I’ve cut the rivets from the inside, punched them out and cleaned the plate and pan. I have not left the plate off. You got to fill the holes anyway, it’s easy to rivet it back and put a little brass on the outside.

My first step would be to measure the voltage at the mag plug—should read 15+ at a fast idle. The volts by are ac the way. A fluke meter is great for this. Call if I can help, Bob @ 903-824-1949.

The choice of engine paint has nothing to do with it’s heat resistance, that is just one of the built-in factors of the paint. I use it because it’s tough, holds up well and readily available.

The transmission shaft goes through from the front (magnet side) of the flywheel. How in the cornbread he!!— that’s when one gets a bit of cornbread stuck in their wind pipe and start’s coughing— can you remove the transmission from the flywheel without disassembling the transmission?

You guys are right as rain. The serial number is a March 1916 not 15 I guess at some point in the past someone tried pull one over. I sure stand corrected. That’s the reason the 5 look’s funky.

In real life, the last part of the date looks like where they secured the date tag in the molding process. And yes the date in the head looks to have been secured by a slotted screw. And then that brings up the question why is the casting of the screw not reversed? With the slot not sticking up inst...

One problem you might in counter is corrosion between brass tab and bolt, preventing continuity. I’ve always removed, cleaned and solder the connections. Being careful not to get the tabs too hot.

The generator has been gone through. It motors when voltage is applied, but dose not charge. Third brush is set to neutral I’m thinking it needs to be flashed? I well remember my mother telling of living in New Mexico mountains as a child and her father cutting a tree at the top a steep grade chaining to the car, using it to slow descent. The ranch house was in the valley and the trees were later used for firewood. A different time in the world.

In aircraft maintenance they always emphasize that bolt torque is achieved with a clean, dry, thread.
