Re: Gotta be something simple - what are we missing?
SUCCESS! The fix was fairly simple. The engine has the Texas T Parts Bosch 009 distributor setup. We discovered that there was a lot of excess play/looseness in the advance/retard linkage attached to the distributor bracket so we corrected that. Also, the bracket clamp on the distributor body that t...

UPDATE: I think we have found the problem!! My buddy called and said he pulled the spark advance lever to full advance and hit the starter - the engine started! Helping a buddy switch out a failed Pertronix in a Bosch distributor and change back to points. Seemed easy enough, we thought. Car was running normally, but the owner left the key on and apparently burned something up in the electrical system. Car is 12 volt. We installed the points and condenser a...

I would highly recommend reading the book before seeing the movie. There were some slight deviations/embellishments from the story for added entertainment factor, but the book helps make the movie more interesting, in my opinion. It's a true story that needed to be told.

Actually, we had a very good experience having our cars used in the movie. Hey guys, wanted to be sure everyone knows about this BIG movie coming out this October. No problema - I think the one that was given to me works on Model T engines to grab the pan bolts and nuts from both sides while tightening in one operation. I can see where this would be a great time-saver when removing and re-installing. I really love these fascinating old tools.

Not sure what caused my overheating issue, except maybe since it was a new engine I might not have had the mixture set just right. I also took it up to a speed she wasn't ready to handle just yet? I'm taking it easy on her for a while to let things loosen up.

Re: New engine start-up ----- NOISE!
Jerry, I think you're on the right track about the bendix gear rubbing against the ring gear. There is a lot of slop without that balance ring being in place and it's bound to allow for parts to come into contact with each other that shouldn't be. Also, when I spin the engine over with the hand cran...

Re: New engine start-up ----- NOISE!
Norman,
No coils, no magnets...see my previous post. I agree with you - it's hard to imagine that the counterweight ring could possibly come off with the Bendix spring and bolts in the way, but stranger things have happened! I"ll still be checking around inside looking for the errant part.

Re: New engine start-up ----- NOISE!
Scott, yes absolutely! I've read of the disaster that ensues when not removing it first. I will say that the flywheel magnets and coils had been removed (we're running a distributor) and oil slingers were installed, but I removed the Bendix anyway as a precaution.

Re: New engine start-up ----- NOISE!
Yep, I already probed around inside with a magnet pick-up tool for the missing ring, but came up with nothing. My next move is to buy or borrow a video inspection camera and do some serious snooping. I'm not sure if it's possible for it to come of the end of the starter with the Bendix spring in the...

NOISE UPDATE!-----got the starter out last night and found this: Model T starter bendix 2.JPG Model T starter bendix 1.JPG Model T bendix spring.JPG The balance ring counterweight is completely missing from the Bendix gear! Without the ring I suppose it caused the spring to bind up and deform. The d...

All comments above are great and certainly worthy of closer inspection. I'll be looking into all of them before swinging the motor. Back later with more details.

Re: New engine start-up ----- NOISE!
Adam, thanks for weighing in. Best I can tell, the cam gear is fiber so I think the problem lurks in the transmission area.

Re: New engine start-up ----- NOISE!
As our own Steve Jelf has so eloquently stated..."the inevitable often happens". Removed the generator last night, started her up, and made the grim discovery that the noise was still there. :( Before I do the engine extraction, I'm going to check the cam gear mesh as Alan has mentioned and remove t...

Re: New engine start-up ----- NOISE!
I have my fingers crossed that the generator is the problem. Sure don't want to have to pull the engine to look for hidden gremlins in the transmission...or elsewhere!

Re: New engine start-up ----- NOISE!
Thanks, Steve. You may be on to something. Since I didn't rebuild the engine, I didn't check the timing gear to see if it was fiber or aluminum. I'll pull the generator to make sure.

New engine start-up ----- NOISE!
I know it's impossible to describe, let alone diagnose strange engine noises on a forum like this, but I'm looking for some general guidance. If my description of the noise problem sounds similar to someone's previous experience I would appreciate the feedback. (I didn't build the engine I'm describ...

Re: Slow Speedsters
Not sure about your definition of "slow", but I have clocked my '27 Speedster at 50 mph. Frankly, it's a little scary when you consider how inadequate the stock brakes are at stopping at that speed if you had to.

Success!! When you first look at all the pieces laying on the workbench and compare them with the holes in the frame and splash apron, nothing makes intuitive sense. High praise to all those who came to my rescue!

Help - 24 Touring hood shelf installation!
I'm in the process of putting a '24 Touring back together that was completely blown apart when I got it. I'm not exactly sure about the sequence of installation of the hood shelves and wood blocks and need some guidance from the pros here on the forum since I've never installed them before. Is there...

Education on Warford transmissiion needed
I'm a newbie to Warfords and know very little about them. I have the chance to buy an iron case Warford trans that is currently installed in a running Model T. The owner is removing it and going with a Ruckstell axle instead. I am going to take a look at it this weekend and would appreciate an educa...

Re: A different option to the fuel sediment bowl
Doug, Don't be scared! I've been using one of these on my 27 Speedster for 5 years without any issues. Unless you're planning to do some rock climbing or high-center on some off-road trails I wouldn't worry about it. The tank sits high enough to avoid most road obstacles you're likely to encounter. ...

Re: What did you do with your model T in June
Lifting a Model T on a 2 post lift is a real pain - the narrow frame and design of the undercarriage makes it tough to set the lift pads and clear everything like the battery box, muffler, and the front wishbone. This is not a new idea to anyone, but I decided to make one yesterday to make oil chang...
