Re: Has Anyone Tried Laminated Glass for Acetylene Headlight Lenses?

Mark - Is it possible the break was not heat-related? Something may have hit the glass while driving, or the lamp door got into a bind when you opened and closed it to light it. Perhaps the front orifice plugged momentarily with a drop of water and the rear jet flared forward and cracked it. Or mayb...

I can't help you with "tread" thickness, but I can tell you they wear faster due to the smooth tread. The gaps in regular tread act like hinges, allowing the tread blocks to roll along the road surface, while smooth tires scrunch up and pull, causing the surface to scrub against the road.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos

Oh, I agree, Rich, about being grateful for the forum! I love my Model T Fords and will probably always have at least one underfoot. Steamers, though - and Stanleys in particular - are so... I don't know - unlikely? Can you imagine trying to sell such a thing today? Honestly, can you imagine spendin...

The first Mountain Wagons were built to carry nine passengers or, if desired, the rear seats could be removed to convert them into an express wagon.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos

There is a loophole, Rich - This is the truck thread, so I can post legitimate photos of Stanley trucks LOL. 3rd-homepage-photo.jpg Drivers of Stanley Mountain Wagons from Estes Park, Colorado, would meet trains at the station in Loveland and drive loads of guests up the Big Thompson River canyon to...

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos

Rich, I honestly have to check myself, otherwise I would blather on about steam forever. I love it. I know it's hijacking the trucking thread, but I'm still waiting for the burner for the sedan. It is a 1923 and completely unrestored. I can't wait to have it back on the road. 20221024_183356.jpg I f...

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos

Rich - I've always heard steam pumpers were connected by umbilicals to the stationary boiler in the firehouse, so the water in the pumper boiler was scalding hot but not under pressure. A healthy charge of kindling, wood and coal were laid in the firebox waiting for a match to be tossed in while the...

Re: Stanley Steam car wheel question

In 1922 Stanley made two distinct models, the 735 and the 740. Most 735s used 26" wheels and most 740s used 23" wheels, but time has a way of slipping different parts onto cars, so who knows what size are on the car. Further, Stanley used lock-ring style rims, not split rims. Still, who knows what i...

Rich Eagle - Although it's not electric, this refers to your gas tail light above in this thread. I was flipping through some photo files looking at construction details for Model T pickup beds and found some photos of the similar gas tail light I had (but gave away). 20201025_172139_resized.jpg 202...

Re: Electric Side Lamps

I had a NOS one of those acetylene tail lamps, Rich, but I gave it away to someone who would use it. Your chimney is there, the lamp mounts with the door hinged at the top. The center hole in that star pattern of holes is where the burner goes and the ones that encircle it are air inlet holes. The b...

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos

This is a real puzzler, Duey. The radiator looks like either a Locomobile or a water-cooled International, but I can't find a contemporary photo or ad for either that decisively confirms it. The flat-fronted and shallower radiator top tank seems to rule out Peerless. Obviously the truck in your phot...

Re: Newish kevlar brake band seemed to swell - car stalled

A tight brake band would make the car struggle and eventually stop on the road, but it wouldn't make the engine stall. Really ? I'm laboring under the misconception (?) that the engine is in direct drive in high gear unless the clutch is slipped into "neutral". Well, yeah, Rich. If ...

Check low band and reverse for pedal travel, too. If the engine is too hard to crank, they are more likely the problem.

Re: Locations for Jacking on a Model T

30 or 40 years ago, probably in The Vintage Ford, there was a series of photos of assembly at Ford branches. Featured were knocked down chassis and bodies and factory-authorized methods of moving them. The chassis had no wheels and were moved using a purpose-built hand truck/wheelbarrow thing with a...

Re: Auxiliary Transmission

OP says his car is a 1917, so it may not have a self-starter. In which case, if he stalls the engine mid-shift, it will not be possible to get an original Warford back into a gear to regain the use of transmission brakes.

Re: Anyone recognize this carburetor?

Those are good carbs. I ran one on the 1915 and it increased the power and speed to a startling degree. But it had a few drawbacks: It had a flat spot I could not get rid of, making it easy to stall when taking off from a stop. It idled GREAT and it was very much faster than the Holley NH it replace...
