1899 to 1910 Ford and others labor statistics, State of Michigan Dept. of Labor
I thought these numbers interesting. Michigan Department of Labor conducted factory inspections and took a head count each year. Unfortunately they didn't provide a factory breakdown for 1902 and 03. The initial Ford Motor Co. numbers show a low number of employees at the Mack Avenue plant. This ins...

This device looks like it let the spring depress, but not rise at speed. I wish I had taken more detailed photos. It is oval, so not a lock, but allows shackle movement in one direction (downward spring action).

This addition is on the Ford Special racer at THF. It’s only on the right spring, and appears to limit possibly the upward flex of the spring? Anyone familiar with anything similar on other T’s? I was somewhat surprised to see that “starting on the spark” was a common theme and often mentioned in early auto stories (1904 on). Rich, sometimes I take it another step, and slowly retard the spark until the engine pops, immediately advancing the lever. Maybe instead of “free start” it should be referred to as Ford Motor Co. did, “starting on the spark.” I’ve had motors that did, and others that didn’t, sometimes for no apparent reason. I agree, a tight engine may not work. On our Model B (1905), it started on the spark every time, but didn’t have ...

Clayton,
Any old photos of your NRS speedster? Sounds quite interesting. You might try the Early Ford Registry for any parts needs.
Thank you for your posts. I’ll add a few non-stock photos here as I find them in my well organized (not) digital filing system (batch of thousands of pics…. ).

Meeting at Piquette Wednesday prior to Old Car Festival
The Early Ford Registry is planning a presentation gathering at the Piquette Plant Wednesday, September 6th, prior to Old Car Festival weekend. If anyone is in Detroit at that time, join us as we present our Early Ford Registry match gift to the Piquette staff. I plan to arrive by 2:00 in the aftern...

A little more to work with on this one. BD68CC46-DE00-4869-A03F-ABF76293407C.jpeg NRS had a spring steel piece and latch on the water pump to hold the crank upright. George H., I saw your post after posting my last. Thank you. We're down to the last weekly vote total, January 12, 1905. Ford has moved up one to 9th again. Not bad for a company that barely registered at the start of this contest in July 1904. Ford Motor Company has moved to a three model (the Mode...

Time for a long Ford story. Late 1904 and early 1905.
I used to put these type of stories up routinely (for those who indulged me). It appears the commission was 15% by 1914. In February 1907 Model N (later R and S) commission was dropped from 20% to 10%. I don’t know how long it stayed at 10. Model K stayed at 20%, the same as preceding models. I’d like to find an invoice like this for one of the Ford cars that show up on Trent...

On a side note, Ford had designed, and used a 2 piece valve cover as early as the summer of 1911. This drawing (courtesy of THF, Benson Research Library, all rights apply) shows the two piece covers used on the largest Ford Special racer (initial 389, then 410 c.i.). Kim,
It’s quieter, although the audio on the phone video may not be very accurate. Kept everything the same, however put in slightly taller pistons. Compression is about 55 lbs now (was on average 45 before). It seems “stronger,” although we’ve not tried it much and starting slow with the break in.
