Re: wood spoke finish
Thanks to all who commented. I've decided to stain and varnish, figuring I can always paint them black later if I get tired of the natural look.

Re: Need to Recover From a Stupid Mistake
I would make a 1" or thicker plate (steel or Alum) with two on-size holes in a mill or on a drill press. Use one hole with a longer bolt in the "good" tapped hole and let the plate guide your tap into the bad hole (to keep the tap straight). If the tap doesn't clean up the threads you can use it to ...

I'm looking for advice on what tire brand to buy for my '16 roadster with 30 x 3-1/2 demountable rims. I drive short distances around the suburbs, I don't expect to go touring.

I would like to build a press with these plans but they are not quite clear enough for me to read them, even when I enlarged them. Can anyone post clearer drawings?

Thanks all! My "new" front wheels do have 4 slight "dents" so they apparently are Hayes. I'll contact Vintage Rims Australia.

WTB 2845B Ford demountable rims for 30 x 3-1/2 tires
I have a 1915/16 roadster that is not very original. It has two Kelsey "loose lug" wheels on the rear with one (I think) Ford rim and one (I think) Hayes rim. The front wheels are non-demountable. I recently bought a parts car with two demountable front wheels (Ford, I think - they are not Kelsey lo...

I have a set of wood spoke wheels that I want to paint. The spokes seem to be original 100+ years old but are in apparently good condition. I've read that "Keratex" horse hoof strengthener is good for wood. Does anybody have experience with this? Should I Keratex my spokes before I paint them?

Re: demountable front wheels
Allan, Thanks, I understand your concern but for my purposes I think the Kelsey/Ford combination will work well. I don't put many miles on my car or drive it fast. I have a question about the spokes - is treating them with Keratex (horse hoof strengthener0 a good idea? Perhaps i should move this to ...

Re: demountable front wheels
[/image] Thanks to all who have educated me! I bought a parts car that has two front Kelsey "loose lug" front wheels that seem OK, and three rusty (but not terrible) Ford rims. I already have this Kelsey/Ford combination on the rear so I'll end up with four Kelsey wheels and five Ford rims. My quest...

Re: demountable front wheels
I've attached a photo of my rear wheel lug. The nut is tapered. The felloe has a "louver" that is not being used - do I have a mismatch of parts? This seems to work OK. Any advice will be appreciated!

Re: demountable front wheels
My loose front wheel spokes seem OK but the rim is not tight to the fellow. One of the bolts (rivets?) in felloe has backed out (toward the center of the wheel) by about 1/4 inch. If I find 30x3.0 front wheels and rims of the same make as my demountable 30x3.5 rear wheels, will the rims fit either w...

Re: no neutral
I found a procedure in Fahenstock's book basically calling for 1/16" free play in the link between the pedal and the high gear lever. I'll try that, and put the rear axle into "Ford" direct drive instead of Ruckstell.

I bought a 1915/16 roadster last winter and am still learning to drive it. The engine 1s from 1922 with electric start. It has a Ruckstell that I have kept in underdrive so far. The car is VERY hard to push in neutral, it takes two men to push it on level ground. Am I wrong in thinking the car shoul...

I am about to buy my first Model T. I want a nice bright flashing red light for the back before I take it out on the busy streets. Can anyone recommend a good one? I don't care if it has it's own battery or if it's hard wired to the car battery (not sure if six or twelve volts)

I'm working on an late 1920's Reiland and Bree dump truck to be used in local parades. The steering is too hard for my old arms! I don't want to make any permanent changes to the truck, but I thought I could adapt a Model T type steering gear to the top of the column, and easily removed if we decide...

I was recently given a pair of E & J 666 headlights that are pretty beat up but mostly complete. Lots of small dents and a few tears in the brass.
