The "direct drive" was used with speedometers that run 2008 rpms at 60 mph. While there was some friction, there will need to be something more to provide a tigher fit or screws to the gear. As Dan mentioned, you may need to braze or weld on some tabs to screw the gear to the hub. Russ

I have a set of Dayton wire wheels, and the Stewart road gear that fits the wire wheel hub is #8685. There are no "tabs" to screw the gear to, BUT the hub is machined to accept the 8685 gear so the runout is perfect. The gear and hub are nearly a press-on fit. I hope this helps. Russ Furstnow

Re: Speedo parts for sale
The second gear is a reproduction Stewart gear. It appears to be a cast gear, not a machined steel one as there are no holes drilled in the gear for mounting. I hope this helps, Russ Furstnow

Here is a beautiful reproduction of a 1908-1909 Stewart Model 044 (1:1 ratio RH) swivel. This swivel is an intricate piece of machine work and works and operates beautifully. It is a faithful reproduction using brass for the swivel body rather than the pot metal body that was used originally. This s...

I restored the following swivels to take to Tulare since I'm not going to go to Chickasha, but I thought I would offer them here on the forum so members could have the first shot at these swivels. 1) This is an original and restored 1911 Stewart Model 1800 (2.5:1 ratio RH) swivel in near mint condit...

Re: Tachometer drive on Model T
Chris, The swivel drives noted in the specifications are just the "normal" swivels used during the period. Some are left hand drives and some are right hand drives. The ratios go from 2.5:1 to 6:1 based upon the tach rpms. I have not seen a standard tach drive mount as it would depend where the driv...

I have read with interest the comments about attaching a tach to a Model T. I've attached a page from the Stewart Warner catalog #22 that describes the attachment. Note that the tachs use a swivel joint just like the Stewart speedometers. I hope this helps. Russ Furstnow

Re: Stewart Model 100 speedometer adjustment.
Steve, There are only three things that impact the speed on a Stewart speedometer: 1) the strength of the magnet 2) the strength of the return hair spring 3) the placement of the metal square tab found below the magnetic drum. The metal square tab is probably what you need to move to increase he spe...

Re: 1917 Coupelet Restoration
Eric, I have seen the Coupelet at Warp's Museum. It also has a 1926 engine, but with that exception, is quite original. I would like to know what the T-194 means, but with the T-1884 Warp car number, maybe it is a sequential number of some sort. Thanks for the information. Russ Furstnow

Re: 1917 Coupelet Restoration
From what I have been able to determine, only five or six of this style of 1917 Coupelets exist today, and only four have their original wood with body numbers. Note the unique gas tank cover.

Re: 1917 Coupelet Restoration
Here are some photos of the restoration. The body number is 27722, and of the original 1917 Coupelets, is the lowest number known to exist. Also, the number "T-194" is stamped onto the passenger side sill just where the floorboard goes up (It is unknown what this number represents.)

I've discussed this 1917 Coupelet before, and now it is time to begin its restoration. I purchased this car from Larry Smith, and he provided a complete original 1917 chassis with the car. Re: Brass speedometer
The speedometer pictured is a "high speed" speedometer. It takes a 1:1 drive and not a 2.5:1 drive. It appears that the road gear and the swivel drive will not run the speedometer accurately. The cable should be around 48" long, and the length of the outer housing can be shortened. I hope this helps...

I'll try to answer these questions: Allen: There is a difference in price for a Jones and Corbin setup, but I'm not sure if it is due to the quality of the speedometer or just the rarity of the units. ANTIQUE SPEEDOMETERS EXPLAINED
After reading a few items on the forum, I think it is time to explain speedometers in some detail. First: No speedometer manufacturer ever expected their speedometers to be around in 110 years! Most manufacturers used pot metal in their speedometers (Jones and Corbin used only brass and steel), and ...

Re: My "new" speedometer was fine until...
Steve, This is a fairly common problem with Model 100 and Model 102 speedometers. The magnetic drum has become loose on the main shaft and is now hitting the aluminum speed cup. I would disconnect the cable immediately. The solution is to take the speedometer entirely apart and remove the magnetic d...

Re: Safety Wire Pan Inspection Bolts
The "safety wire" used on early pans with inspection plates is totally correct and original. This is a fine point that is often overlooked when 1911 and early 1912 Fords are restored. The inspection plate is also unique in that it has a "ridge" going around the plate where the bolts are placed and t...

Re: Steward Speedometer Miles / Km/h
Beat, From the photo of the box of parts you purchased, the road gear (#8586) is not going to give a correct reading since is it for a 30X3 1/2" tire and it is for use with the Model T machined hub. You need gear # 30333 or 31376. Stewart did make a KPH Model 160 speedometer (I have one) and the odo...
