FWIW, which may be nothing, I rebuild, restore, and reproduce all styles of Heinze coils used on Fords and other early cars, 1906-1914. Exact replacement parts are readily available and I have many satisfied customers. The issue is my getting back out to the shop, if and when this knee/leg will allo...

Bill is right; I forgot to mention that the registration must be renewed annually, currently about $28 I think, and the car must also have a yearly safety inspection. Re: Model T’s in New York
Relax. New York has made it pretty easy to register an antique. Go to the local DMV office and/or the state DMV website for the needed information. The state will not issue a title, just a so-called "transferable" registration that, within the state, is as good as one, so be careful of that document...

Keith is correct. The box is post-era and is rather loosely based on the 1907 Heinze box used on the Model R. I have built several of these, along with the correct coils. They are a ton of work to build correctly, just like Heinze did, right down to the correct adjusting sticker pasted inside the li...

At the points, there is sparking and then there is sparking. A small amount of it is normal, but a heavy, fat blue spark at the points, with little or none at the plug, means an open condenser. Thin sparks that shoot sideways for a distance means loose contacts. Close examination while nudging the c...

I'd say that they could go either way, before the assembly line came into being and the power tools used for tightening fasteners were in fixed locations. No doubt some of Ford's workers were left-handed, so, early on, they did it however it was more comfortable for them.

To answer Allan's question, the laminated shims have been around at least since T days. They were likely more expensive than plain ones, so most home mechanics probably didn't use them. They were almost certainly more of a shop item, since to a rebuilder, then and now, time is money.

OK John; here ya go, from the Ford drawing: Both holes are 5/16" diameter. The center of the upper hole is located 14-1/4" from the centerline of the dash, and 5-3/8" down from the top edge (no molding). The center of the lower hole is 2-1/2" below the center of the upper hole, and 17/32" outboard o...

Re: September, you and your T.
My '14 has been off the road for the past year because of a bent left axle shaft. I finally got it rebuilt, just in time for the Old Car Festival, using new shafts on both sides; all other parts, gears, differential cases, etc., are NOS except for the roller thrust washers, which were still in perfe...

Re: Which Headlight Ring?
Side note, FWIW: A friend had the small creek bordering his property turn into a raging torrent after yet another horrendous thunderstorm this summer. After the flood subsided he went to check the damage, and found that the flood had washed up gobs and chunks of mud onto his lawn. Sticking out of on...

The rim with the small clips is designed to be used with the clear, round glass lenses used in 1915-21. The rims with the larger clips are designed for the Ford H lens, which has four flat sides.

GBC 32-34. Will have most of my line of over 200 reproduction Model T and horseless carriage parts on hand. Rewound field coils, rebuilt early T and pre-T coils, parts for same. Stop by and drop off your coil and field coil cores; save a pile of shipping costs. New item this year: T rear lifting hoo...

Horrible news indeed. I'm stunned to hear it. Tony was always such fun to chat with at the several swap meets that we both attended. As insignificant as they are in the face of such a tragedy, my deepest and most heartfelt condolences to Susan and the entire family.

This was the issue that carried the famous first public announcement of the Model T, and which resulted in the Ford sales office being "well-nigh inundated" within just a few days.

Very sorry to hear of this and see the damage. This probably won't make you feel much better, but Mark is right; you have a lot more to be thankful for than upset about.

I use Minwax UV resistant spar urethane on my coil boxes, either a gloss or satin finish as chosen by the customer. I also used it on my '14 dash. The gloss is more weather resistant.

Set of four plus a spare. These are the ones built for the T; they are NOT the "yellow label" fence units. They all have NOS K-W Sparkite points with a bit of surface rust in spots on the vibrators. Properly rebuilt and calibrated. $250 for the 5 plus shipping. No exchange cores needed. Email direct...

I used ordinary Centari as on the rest of the body. Properly set up headlamps just don't get that hot. Surprisingly, the chimneys don't either, not as much as you would think anyway, though you certainly don't want to grab hold of one when the lamps are lit.

Not all T but most are. My shipping table's getting kinda full. The T Heinze units are all waiting for points, which has been the big hold-up preventing them from going out. The units on the left front are rebuilt 1910 Jacobson-Brandow, waiting for the box to be finished up. The single unit on the f...

Model Ts have a "spectator sensor" that kicks in whenever anyone is watching you try to start it. If you have just commented to the effect that the car is very reliable and starts on the slightest twist of the crank, the sensor's sensitivity increases exponentially and will only shut down after ever...

Yes, every so often many of us get that little tap on the shoulder, our own memento mori. Last month I was working in my shop as usual when I had what amounted to a stroke in my left eye. Luckily I was able to get right in to my opthamologist who injected a steroid directly into the eyeball which st...

Re: Model T Coils - Ford/K-W, Heinze, Kingston, others
To answer Keith's question, none of the makes of early coils have the same dimensions as another make; all are different. To address Mike's question, the most common make (today) of the early units is Heinze, followed by Kingston, especially the T-4238 (1912) units. The J-Bs were the least used, ori...

Measuring from the socket "eye", #2 & 3 are 23-1/2" and #4 is 28-1/2". These are original Ford measurements; reproduction sockets may vary.
