Good advice. I think I'll build some time making some things like top boots and tool bags and see how it goes before I dive into a larger project.

Canvas for tops

I have a couple of early cars, including a 1914 T Runabout, that have old deteriorated tops made of plain black canvas. I had a chance to get a Juki industrial sewing machine from an upholstey shop that went out of business, and now I am thinking making my own tops and accessories. I don't think I w...

I am surprised that no one suggested eBay. Search by lowest price first and watch the quantity being offered. There are some ridiculous prices, but also some good bargains.

Reproduction Schrader 777 tire valve

I am thinking of having a batch of Schrader 777 style tire valves made. I have no idea what the price would be yet; naturally the number made would have a lot to do with the per unit cost. What I have in mind would be a valve ready to install on an inner tube with a nut and washer. You supply the ou...

When is the time to replace inner tubes? I have tires that need replacement, but does this indicate tube replacement as well, or can the tubes live on? They have rubber stems, they hold air, and have they never needed to be patched in the 20 years I have owned the car.

I have used a power hand planer and belt sander with a 36 grit belt to sculpt until close on jobs like this, but a spoke shave or draw knife is the more cautious approach.

These suggestions are encouraging. The reed is original but the tube is a repro that might not be the best. Its windings are coarser than others I have seen and it isn't lined, so I am sure it leaks. I'll do some experimenting and report back.

On the car, use Dawn dish washing liquid and an old toothbrush for the oil and grime. Not sure what if is strong enough to clean the oxidation to suit you, yet safe for everything else adjacent to the aluminum. The oxidation may not be pretty, but is it probably a protective layer.
