Possibly just burned up the coil in the amp meter. They normally will work fine on 12 volts but could have been weak. Take the cover off of the generator and cut out and inspect for burning. Disconnect the battery of course first.

Those drive gears can be difficult to find. A solution is to build one from the replacement sets (Part Number BO2). Some machining and brazing.., Done. Yes you have clearance. I have double D couplers if you wish to go this way. It is the same method as modern vehicles with a collapsable column shaft, perfectly safe. You do not weld them, you pin them.

You can always use a double D coupler. Install midway where the shaft comes though the firewall and where the steering box guide is. It requires milling on both pieces but would be a lot cheaper than having the end machined.

Best to always stand the coil up right on the firewall, I always use a ballast resistor too and this normally cures all problems. An old Dodge style works great.

Still laughing Kevin! The money spent in R & D, what a waste of time. Should have made heads from scratch, really! There is no simple one fits better than another, Dad even came up with using a twin cam Alfa Romeo head. A lot of work is an understatement. Best advice, buy something already to go! Hank

Find a new Mallory dual point adjust a curve style for a Vega or VW on Tbay and re-machine the base to fit a Reeder or Auto Dis.

Too many factors of performance come into play. We have built T engines that will rev up 5,000 RPM. What are you building is the main question, ie, cam, valves, overhead, stroker, etc.

6 degrees +/- 2 degrees BTDC @ idle. 28 degrees +/- 2 @ full advancement BTDC. Curve response is depended on cam and compression ratio used. I usually attach a vacuum meter to determine optimal curve. Old School Me!

James I believe the decision is yours and yours only. If you accept it and it does fail then you knew the risk. Either way having fun is what is all about.

On a side note.., knew a guy with the same issue some 40 years ago. As far as I know it is still running fine.
