Steve my understanding of the early Z head vs others was the combustion chamber was similar to a low head 6 to 1 or better with the appearance of a high head. I have the same one on my 1925 Boat Tail Speedster, 280 cam, split manifold and the performance is very impressive.

This girl is around 30 or more years old, my Dad bought used around 1997, but a real beauty. The only issues are elongated holes which are typical when installing with a Torpedo hood and most require lifting by about a 1/2" to include the hood former as they are slightly taller than stock T radiator...

Over the years your stop shoulder on the bolt shank is probably gone or the cam washer has been crushed. You can either hold the back of the shaft by a flat spot and then tighten the nut. Best to add a star washer to prevent it from coming loose.

That's pretty much it in a nut shell.., bolt on performance, But.., some bored out the valve guides or did no repairs to valve seats during a rebuild then installed the over head valve option. Pandora's Box!

Those appear to be Jaxon's from a Chevy wheel. Have your 21" split rims been re-drilled in a different location for the valve stem? That would tell for sure.

Mark,

The best method is to only use 10% gasoline with kerosene, and just enough fluid to cover the little pan. I was showed years back by an old guy and he used a little sawdust that was soaked in motor oil and then added the gas and kerosene. might want to practice first.

My Mistake, I was under the impression Dan was referring to X rod in X grooving the inside babbitt. Can I blame it on the heat today?

The cost in the manufacturing process I believe is why they left in a hurry. Henry always want more nickels in HIS pockets.

There were so many various manufactures of them (companies) and spare parts were so hard to find in the field, that after WW1 the military started the "M' series of vehicles. This made vehicles with inter-changeable parts.
