Have a bottle from a friend's estate. Harbor Freight, US made, ultrasonic general purpose cleaning powder.
Might color-stain aluminum and magnesium parts. No hint of what's inside tho.
Some folks use vinegar I believe.

IF they're similar to the Runabouts, this 24 still has remains of the slats and both top & bottom hangers.
I just don't know if there are similarities plus we could have different branded body work.

There have been folks that use tapered pins to tighten it all back together if all is well. Worked for them.

Some of my axles look like that with rough cuts taken, boring those sleeve-surface inside diameters. Certainly no expert at all but I'd say quite normal. Guys? When my best axle tubes came back from getting cooked out, there was a bunch of dry crud left in the tubes, I grabbed a piece of 1/4 or 5/16...

I too prefer cork in some places and have made my own forever. Especially tin covers of any kind but I seldom use sealant.
Head down to your favorite parts store also for cork rolls.
