Aware that the 26-27 hogshead accepts a magneto post assembly with a tapered half inch thread similar to the spark plug thread. The earlier magneto posts are held with three screws. What is the size of the opening for the earlier magneto posts? Generally about the same, approx. a .740" opening, in ...

Copious amount of good gasket sealer, the grey Right Stuff. Then wipe off the excess around the seal area.
That will fill gaps and seal from oil leakage.
Had to remove the previous modern seal in the foreground, due to just a tiny wipe of blue RTV, that allowed seepage.

Re: Oil leak/puddle underneath the starter...
Try tightening the 4 starter mounting machine screws. They can work loose with starter torque. Or may be missing the needed lock washers, or gasket is shot. Check engine oil level too, needs to be below the top petcock.
If above isn’t the case, then worn starter bushings.

Re: weld repair on axle by the keyway
Replacing with new is much safer. T axles are now over 100 years old, and fatigued. And many do fracture at the keyway, from loose hub. Cutting a new key way 180 degrees away would induce more chance of fracture in such an aged used axle. MY 2 Cents. So nice to have new quality T axles made in Taiw...
