Re: A $20 (or less!) DIY regulator, and other issues
Nothing from them yet, but my experience in the past 4 years has been decidedly different with respect to 6v batteries. My charge rate has varied from 5A when I had a cutout (2 yrs) to 7or 8A with what I've now determined is a non functioning FP regulator (2 years) and my batteries have invariably l...

Jeff, however I'm a fan of the 494 cct which, as JohnH suggests, would be a lot easier on the mechanism and perhaps less distracting for the driver ;) Luke, It's funny we've been so focused on the meter....but what about the battery? Re: A $20 (or less!) DIY regulator, and other issues
John,
Yes, I do realize that but if it's only for a couple of seconds just to slow the transition it shouldn't really make that much difference, esp since that device is already operating at room temp, and it's heat sinked. I'll give it a try and see what happens.

So it finally got to 53F today and I drove around for a couple hours with the regulator in the car. A few things I noticed - the good news is the design functions exactly as it was meant to. For better or worse, I cut off the part of the new insulator that goes under the stationary brush and use only the portion that goes under the moveable brush. Having driven with both the TL494 and LM393 regulators, my personal preference is for the LM393. The reason is simply that by glancing at the ammeter it's obvious the regulator is working. With the switchmode control from the TL494, I find I have to loook more closely at the ammeter to interpret th...

Tony, Ok I’ve verified your new circuit. I had better luck with a 75k resistor for R6. I also put a 0.0068uf cap across that resistor and it seemed to help dampen the on/off oscillation. I an presently running a Bosch clip on with cent. advance. It works quite well and gives the engine a real "rap" on acceleration. I also have a front plate original Bosch set up which appears to have some sort of built in cent. advance as well as a connection for the spark lever. Please expand on t...

Re: Winfield carb intake manifold fun... and braising cast iron.
Jeff: That failed brazed joint appears to me to have been made with a minimum of heat, all the brass is on the outer surface, none has flowed into the joint gap, making it a weak, fatigue prone mechanical joint. I suspect this was intentional to insure none of the brass seeped inside the manifold w...

If you convert a 6v starter to 12v I *highly* recommend buying new field coils and using those for the conversion. I've done several of these 6 to 12v conversions and using old coils is just asking for trouble... you might be able to rewrap the outer coil but that does nothing for the 100 year old i...

Winfield carb intake manifold fun... and braising cast iron.
So a month ago "George" started running a little rough. At first I thought it was a spark problem as shorting #1 had zero effect. Hours down that path proved useless, so I just kept driving and Trying to adjust the mixture on the carb to no avail. Then Last Tuesday I took a drive to get a flu shot a...

I can say the triple gear pin bearing upgrade from Dan is rock solid and worth a look. Just a really, really happy customer. The pic on the bottom is what it prevents, especially when you climb as many massive hills as I do.
