Re: Rear axle keyway

My two cents: If the inner end of the keyway slot in the axle is covered by the end of the seal, then the seal isn't installed far enough and the slot will eventually chew up the seal material even if you shorten the key. If I recall, the aluminum seal has an O-ring (or two) that is a tight fit on t...

Re: New clincher rims from “Vintage rims “ in Australia.

When you mount them to the felloes, you may find that it's hard to get all four rim bolts installed. The original Hayes rims had one lug with an oblong hole to make it easier to install the fourth bolt. I had to take a rat tail file to one of my lugs on each rim to add that oblong hole feature. :)

Re: WTB demountable rims for 30 x 3-1/2 tires

Some Hayes felloes have a "dent" in the outer rim at each lug location to allow the lug foot to clear, others have a cut notch. It's hard to tell, but I think I see a faint indication of the "dent" in the picture, I would need a closer view to confirm. Here is a picture of a Hayes rim showing the lu...

Re: Gas Lamp Hook Up Kit Installation

You're welcome. One other thing, the vendors sell brass clamps to clamp the red hose onto the ends of the brass tubing, but I don't think that Ford used any clamps, can one of the experts confirm? :) A bit OT, but here are a few pictures of the lamps lit on my 1912 Flanders. Note that the burners ar...

Re: Gas Lamp Hook Up Kit Installation

You are smart to ask before you cut anything. I'm not sure that 1913 and 1914 hookups were exactly the same, Larry Smith and Royce Peterson would be the best sources for info. A Google search for "acetylene routing mtfca" revealed these old threads: https://mtfca.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=2012 http...

Re: Are these pliers used for 1915 tool kit

I have read that even the early car pliers had one handle tapered, can anyone show their early Ford script pliers that do not have the taper on one handle? BTW, the pliers in my pic came with my 1924 when I bought it in 2013, whether they are the pliers that came with the car when it was built I can...

I have my doubts. Ford pliers have the Ford script and one of the handles is tapered down to double as a screwdriver.

Re: Patching top?

I wore a small hole in my top from the repeated abrasion from putting it up and down over the years, I did just what you suggested. I cut a patch about the size of a silver dollar, then glued it to the inside over the hole. Then, after the glue dried, I took a needle and black thread and hand sewed ...

Just a suggestion, before you pull the drag link it off, jack up the front wheels and have a helper turn the steering wheel from lock to lock to see if the drag link is fouling on another part which is causing it to bend. :)

Russ F., will there be a printed 8th edition of the guidelines available soon? Or maybe an update pack for the current 7th edition? I looked on the MTFCI store and didn't see one. :)

Oil Can Shakeup

I just downloaded the April, 2022 updates for the MTFCI judging guidelines (I know, I'm slow). Among the many interesting and useful updates was a major shakeup of the oil can descriptions for each year. The bayonet spout style that was specified for all if not nearly all years now applies ONLY to 1...

Re: Getting Rattles Back On The Road

Excellent! Start with the seat bottom cushion, it's the easiest. It helps to compress the spring pack on top of the cushion material using a flat table, a board, and a couple lengths of all-thread. Here is the setup I used on my 1912 Flanders. When you feel ready to tackle the seat back, attach it a...

Re: Pulling outer bearing sleeves

Do all of the period aftermarket pullers rely on the hole in the sleeve, or do some of them work differently?

My 1912 Flanders has the same size sleeves as a Model T, but they don't have the hole. Luckily, my sleeves are in good condition, so hopefully I won't have to replace them any time soon. :)

Re: Pulling outer bearing sleeves

Be sure to twist the tool in the direction to close the gap in the sleeve while you apply an even pull. Don't just pull on one side of the tool, find a rod that goes through both holes in the tool so that you can pull straight back while you twist. If you can't see the gap in the sleeve, use a wire ...

Jeff, check the fit of a new set of bushings (prior to reaming) on his old shackles. Sometimes the undersize of unreamed bushings will make up for the wear in old shackles, resulting in a good fit. :)

Great! Be sure to keep the sealer, varnish, and/or paint off of the sides of the spoke hubs, otherwise it will add thickness and the spokes won't fit properly on the hubs. Have you built your wheel press? Be sure when you place the spokes on the hubs that you orient the chamfer towards the hub flang...
