Kim,
We are going back to the “factory setting.” I thought we may was well start at the beginning. There wasn’t a big change with the change we made before. That inotself surprises me.

Let the sorting begin.

The plan is to have this 1905 (built in late 1904) Ford Model B at Richmond for the Model T Reunion. We hope to have all the “alphabet Fords” there. Thanks Scott, The car was cold and I think set a little rich this morning. Here’s a better video. I set the frame rate to 2x speed, and moved across all four ports. Keith snd Mathew, thanks for your replies. I think I need to “hover” over each pipe for a few revolutions to really see the volume and color of each cylinder. I wish the camera frame rate was faster, but doubt in the dark it would help (if I can change it on an iPhone anyway).

Running the Ford Special racer in the dark

Bruce V. S. suggested I try videotaping the racer in the dark to see how the cylinders are firing at slow speed. Here are the results. I'd appreciate any comments/observations. Maybe this is as good as it gets, due to high cam/valve lift and valve timing? The first video is at regular speed. Initial...

Re: Something one doesn't see everyday - 1905 four cylinder Ford with her clothes off....

Dan, I agree. What I find amazing is that Henry Ford was already planning his first four cylinder production car by late 1903. While the 2 cylinder Model A was an instant success, he was on his way toward an inexpensive 4 cylinder production car (he'd already built two of the fastest racers in the w...

Re: Something one doesn't see everyday - 1905 four cylinder Ford with her clothes off....

Thanks guys. Just received some bad news, cracked crank. Ouch. But, better to find out now than later..... Brent, Erik and others, this is what little I have regarding cam timing the Model B. First, a drawing from THF Benson Library archives, (thank you Kim D.), all rights apply THF. I belie...

Re: Something one doesn't see everyday - 1905 four cylinder Ford with her clothes off....

Dan, It didn't seem to make a big difference. However, when we changed it (to where it is in the photo), the car no longer started on spark after priming. Initially, I could pull it through three times after choking, and then start on the switch every time. Who knows, our "electrical/timing" problem...

Good points guys. William Tell Overture it is next time. Mack, I wish we could see the six cylinder racer put through it's paces. Like the largest of the 1910-1912 Ford Special racers, it sits off site at THF. I've looked at it closely, and it's a monster, and I can only imagine the sound, and impre...

Re: Something one doesn't see everyday - 1905 four cylinder Ford with her clothes off....

Thanks guys. I am always impressed and in awe when looking at the early Fords (through the Model T), and the progress Ford was making. When most low cost cars were one cylinder, Henry Ford, from the start, used two cylinders. For 1905 (beginning in late 1904), Ford, like many high end producers, wen...

The "B" is at Fawcett Restorations in Whitby, Ont., Canada. Peter and the guys are getting it all apart. The body and hood are in primer, and the motor and chassis are apart now:

Leonard,
That’s a great idea. If I have reason to bring the trailer, I will. Otherwise, the cost is driving the Prius is hard to pass up. :)

Good points all. I thought it poignant, yet somehow reassuring. The wealthiest man the world had ever known, living, and dying, at home, with his wife at his side. No scandal, no mystery, simply a fitting end to a long, accomplishment filled life.

Working on Christmas Day - Piquette Plant, 1905

The employees were off for Christmas, and the Ford Motor Co. Board of Directors voted to give employees a $10 Christmas bonus (over $300 today). Interesting to note A. Y. Malcomson made the motion. Only weeks earlier Malcomson had been "outed" for starting Aerocar, and asked to resign from the board...

Each Christmas, this comes to mind. Clara Ford's recollections of her husbands last day.

Initially I found this typed letter in a file at THF Benson Library. I've since located it in the Flint Journal archives. I thought it touching, as Mrs. Ford writes a friend about the loss of a loved one and the Christmas season: 2BAE4D0C-F2EF-41FB-B8A2-8D4D71CC1074.jpeg 424D8B40-C717-4E52-8F2C-A340...

Eric, You've found quite a lot. When we speak at a point, I have a few ideas and suggestions regarding DPL. It's good to find another researcher(s) looking at similar, yet dissimilar areas. What one person may not be looking for may be important for another researcher. My primary interest (although,...

Re: Five ball carb question

Scott (or anyone), any idea how large the holes/seats were? We’re trying to determine how large replacement balls should be, based on how far down in the seats they should fit? Also trying to determine any rhyme or reason to how the different seats were graduated?
Thank you,
Rob

Thanks Jem. We’re goi g with the replacement, and trying to determine what the ball size should be. While a larger carb and balls/seats, the relation between the ball and seat may be similar.

Hopefully we try it later this week.

Frank and George, good links, thank you.

As with the crystal punch bowl trophy (requested by Alexander Winton) Henry Ford won with his first racer, the trophy is probably lost to history. Sure be a heckuva score on a garage sale…..

Eric, I've found it a bit confusing as to when, and who, was in the pacemaker/pilot car at times. That's why a few key articles have been helpful as far as "tracking" when the K roadster (or a K model, as in the Chicago to St. Louis portion, still not sure if the roadster was still the K pilot, but ...

Re: Researching the 1909 Ocean to Ocean Race

Dave, The announced plan was for the pilot car and race master (Gerrrie, A.A.A representative) to act as control to St. Louis. The reason the other sanctioning body (name escapes, maybe Eric or others will fill in the info) lifted their sanction was because it was a “road race.” The plan was to obse...
