Removing a battery from a 1927 roadster

Is there an easy way to remove the battery from a 27 roadster? I'm thinking about getting a running board battery box like you see on TTs to allow easier access in the future. Pro's and cons?
Last post
Richard,
You did not state whether or not you had your battery in a box. I only have a board and rubber pad. After, removing the top and disconnecting cables, I suppose you could push it up from underneath and slip a 2x4 scrap above the lower strap and then get a better grip from above.

So about 3 and a half years ago my wife found a 1926 Touring for sale in the local paper. I went to look at the car and bought it. The guy showed me a video of the car running form the previous year. He said the the Clutch was stuck and that was why the rear wheel was now not moving. As I took a better look at it when I got it home I found that...

Thanks for the input Mike. I'm going to give the lactate a try. I have used a lathe before but on wood and on some small stuff when I was working on clocks. I don't have one to work on metal. If the Loctite doesn't work I may get a new bracket or if I can't find one then I'll see if I can find one that would fit. Thanks for the sizes as well.

I’m ready to put new sneakers on my ‘26 split rims and am considering going with 5.25-21. My engine is strong and I do have a Rux in this pickup. Hi everyone,
I just finished installing new axle shafts in a Ruckstell differential and I’m wondering if I did right to use anti seize on the tapers. Evidently there has been some debate on the matter. I also installed new hubs. Any thoughts appreciated!
Last post
Anti seize will make removing the wheel easier, but that's not the game. The taper is meant to be dry, neat fitting and reliant on nil movement between components. That is what a taper joint is all about. Your doubts and subsequent question will have served you well.

Nothing like a little “Trash talk” to get things started - ha ha ha!
I’ll pass that one along. It’s especially important because the field is an active airport, and we are along the taxiway.
We want to be good tenants, and not have our trash blowing into the airport operations.

Most were copies of a kit that Sears and Roebuck sold, just for Model Ts in the earl 1915s and later 1925.
I have copies of some of them and some kit photos that someone sent to me.

I'm pretty sure that that the covers would retard brass tarnish and greatly reduce reflector tarnishing. Applying and buffing plain Carnauba wax would probably delay brass tarnishing as well as anything, and covering the waxed parts with well-fitting covers would offer further protection by keeping dust, moisture, bird emissions, and busy fingers...

I reinstalled my magnets and I am using the KR Wilson jig. Reading over the comments on this forum regarding this issue I see people say they shoot for an overall variance of +/- 20 thousands. I can't find any mention regarding the magnet height relative to the trans shaft. The book says anywhere between 13/16 and 53/64. Is this measurement not...

Darn it Dan! Now I have another thing to address on a rebuild, the transmission shaft flange.

Unless the clutch hub has worn the shaft, losing its press fit, the center shaft need not be replaced.
A light facing with a tool post grinder in a lathe (same way a crank flange is squared up) will take care of any slight...

I don't think the line across the radiator on the touring is a fender brace. It appears to be attached to the radiator shell. I'd guess it's an accessory or owner added item for the purpose of retaining a lower radiator winter front to prevent the radiator from freezing in cold weather. It evidently isn't for mounting a license plate.

A few comments: 1) If you are reaming the rear bushing to compensate for a front or center cam bearing bored off center, that's just plain bad practice. Replace the bearings or adjust your method of boring them to get them concentric with the OD. Reaming them to size in a bench vise is a good way to get them off center. They should always be bored...

With the firewall and rear mounting frame in place, use stiff cardboard to make a pattern that fits the two components. That will give you the shape you need to cut in the steel sheet. Custom made for a custom fitment. No need to follow a plan .

Metallurgy may differ. Plates that have been bent and straightened will be somewhat hardened, which may affect their magnetic behavior. Soft steels magnetize easily, but will not hold magnetism well. Harder steels and steel alloys will hold magnetism. Field pieces uses in association with permanent magnets are usually very soft steel.

Felt or new style crank seal?

I needed to take the pan off a engine built (too) many years ago to check things and get it ready for installing my Rajo BB head. In the process, I mangled the new style crank seal I had installed. I have both felt seals and a new style seal that I could install. Can’t make up my mind which to use. The new one would probably seal better, but seems...

I installed a new style crank seal in 2010 during my last overhaul. Has not leaked since.

AHOOGA 6v motor speed? Like, what RPM does the motor turn? I'm thinking of getting a cheap 12v AHOOGA and then replacing the motor.

Seems like I remember there was an easy way to rewire the brush contacts and make it work fine on 6 volts.
That was years ago!

I decided to paint the fenders, running boards and splash aprons of my coupelet this winter to give me something to do. I have taken measurements of the frame and running board and fender irons and want opinions on what I should do. All measurements were to the ground.
The front of the car measurements were taken where the radiator sits on the...

I beg to differ. Sheetmetal fitted under tension will be stressed. Twisting/wracking of the frame in use will futher stress, leading o cracking in the panels at the mounting points.
Using a podger bar to align holes in a static situation like a water tank or building frame is not the same as doing so on in a dynamic situation.
This is often the...

I just bought a really nice manifold heater. It is straight as a die and the exhaust pipe threads are perfect. The screws holding the tins on came right out. It did not come with the parts that go in the floorboard so I have to find or make them. I have looked at different ones in the forum and other places and I don’t see one quite like this. It...

Thanks guys. I got a register on the way in the post. I will clean things up and get the manifold ready to go on the 22 in the spring. I have a Z head to go on it and a few other things to do when the weather gets better. I have a zenith carb and intake I might try as well. My 22 is a rolling accessory magnet.

Hub drum pictures?

by
Steve Jelf » Sun Jan 25, 2026 11:29 pm
First post
At one time a device for getting a car unstuck was an accessory drum that attached to one of the rear wheels. A rope attached to a solid object ahead, like a tree, would be wound around the drum as the wheel turned, pulling the vehicle out of its stuck position. Anybody know where I could find a picture of the item being used?
Last post
Actually, it should work if you read the trade journal articles or advertisements.
Why?
Because it came with a PAIR of hub drums and hooks. Therefore, you installed drums and cables/ropes on BOTH rear hubs.
Note that the ad below contains an error - it says Hennepin Street. It should be Hennepin Avenue.
Pillsbury Manufacturing Co. also...

Tuning a batch of Kingston High Bridge. This model coil was used in Model T from 1909-1910. There are a few original coils in this batch and the rest are brand new coils. The brass bridge was cast and machined and new wood boxes made.

It should not be necessary to turn down the bushings. However variations in spindle bores may mean some bushings are tighter than others. When pressing them home, stop a little from fully set and blow out any swarf under the head created in the process. Then press fully home.
I tight bush may need more reaming than another. It will all even out...

When I tore my car apart to look at my frame after the accident, I saw that the right rail was pushed in from the side. I attribute that to the reason my engine seemed to sit...

I have had to get new bearings for a 920-1 cast iron warford this week. Old MTFCA posts were helpful, but I don't think there was anything recent so I will post some information to aid people who might be rebuilding one.
This is old information that I am pretty sure was published directly by Warford:

Aluminum Warford input & output bearings are the same size as Model A bearings just like a Muncie. I use the double sealed ball bearings.

Top/Lid for Boyco Running Board Cans

I am looking for some tops/lids for Boyco gas/oil/water running board cans. I tried to find the chafing dish fuel cans as suggested in the past but they are not the right size on the brand I found.
I talked to Howell's Sheet Metal who makes new cans and holders but they have not found a source for the lids.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Last post
If you have lathe access you can make lids from billet material.
I made a set for a different brand from brass. Knurled the outside.
You gotta make a cutter that profiles the very round thread.
