Wire wheel ID

First post
Picking up a '27 Touring in a few weeks, planning on taking the wire wheels and Ruckstell for my '26 coupe, then making it run and pass it along to someone else. I'm just curious if anyone can identify the wire wheels from a couple pictures, just want to make sure they aren't A wheels or something....
Last post
They look like T wheels to me. A model wheels are easy to identify. They have a raised ridge pressed outwards between each stud hole. This stiffens up the hub so the wheels do not crack between the stud holes like some T wheels do.
Allan from down under.
Ah, I see what you mean, I had never noticed that difference before, but that's very good...

who knows how to take the brass top off of a 1915 sidelamp?
Last post
If the sidelamp is rusty, about nine times out of ten, just turning the brass cap will break the long stud that holds it to the rest of the lamp, and in turn holds the top half of everything together.
Usually, that stud can be replaced by very careful brazing (put the brass cover into water to keep it from getting too hot and disappearing!),...

My '14 T has a very minor fuel tank leak in the area where the sediment bowl screws in and I'm going to attempt a soldering repair. So to summarize,
It can be done, but according to experienced perspectives, results can vary from safe to fatal. Fuel to air must be below the combustable limit - the best means of displacing fumes is mechanical, either by air, exhaust or CO2.

The local VFW regained possession of a T that was original to the little town. One thing that sticks out is the hole in the cowl . Sure looks to be a factory looking hole. Anyone know what it is? Thank you IMG_8131.jpg

If the T has the original coils, the radio would not work. I have driven a modern car with an AM radio while the T was idling. The radio had static for about 200' from the house. Maybe if they had a distributor they could modify it with resisters or resistor plugs or something like the modern cars use.

For the guys running a Rajo ohv… or any OHV, do you need to run a water pump? I know in original articles in model t in speed and sport it was a common addition, but it seems the consensus now is a water pump is not needed if the rad is in good working order.

My dad ran a T model Fronty for years in his speedster. Great runner, no pump. That motor is basically unchanged and is now in his brass touring car… with a pump. Smaller radiator, more weight, and no hood louvers may have had something to do with needing the pump…?

Thanks!

Clearance between the top of piston and the underside of the combustion chamber to generate quench (create turbulence) should be around 0.038 to 0.060. On a flat motor, quench can become problematic, because you need space around the valves to generate effective laminar flow both underneath and around the valve heads (increase cc volume). The only...

Last post
It's not difficult to make your own switch. 1: sheet metal scraps to make a body and lever. 2: spring attached to the pedal shaft and the lever. 3: The least expensive push button temporary switch from the hardware store. When you step on the pedal, the spring pulls the lever against the push button to turn on the brake lights.

Last post
My vote is plain flat glass. Laminated glass is thinner and may break easier. I would also be concerned about the heat and the laminate.
That's what I was thinking as well - the glass on an acetylene light gets toasty, and I'd worry about the laminate between the sheets.
I had a local glass company make one out of some plate glass for the gas...

Last post
I use one of our brass $1 coins to replace the fibre washer between the axles. They are thick enough that they can be sanded down to make a custom fit for the particular job. A collapsed bronze diff thrust may allow the crown wheel and pinion gear to over-ride one another. Hence the safety compromise, because you will lose the Ford transmission...

Does anyone know of a stone guard available for tall T radiator? Did they ever use one?
With the price of a radiator these days it might be a good thing.

I assume with some work involved, a 28-29 A stone guard could be made to work, even if it didn't fit perfectly, but at Home Depot, Lowes, and most well stocked hardware stores, they sell sheets of expanded metal (usually aluminum) in various patterns.

Vince, if you don't have a way to accurately check the balance of your T crankshaft and flywheel/transmission assembly, at least weigh your rods and pistons and match them in weight. I've read Ford did not do this at the factory, but instead weighed them and just...

The driven gear for the speedometer needs replaced. The odd thing is it's a 17 tooth gear and all of the replacement ones I can find are 16 tooth. I have no idea of what it was originally on as I found a receipt from when the guy that restored my T bought the whole package at a swap meet back in 1980. I think he paid $100 for it. If I have to I'll...

How about meeting up with this outfit for part of this ride, Larry?
Their itinerary shows them coming through Lake Tahoe on the way to San Francisco. On the way across the state they'll go right through my town between Sacramento and Stockton. I hope to meet them at Tahoe and go with them to San Francisco, then back home.

Put in a search - like :Changing model T tires.
Several videos will show as well as past MTFCA posts on the subject.
Back when clincher tires were made correctly, when the beads are set there was overlapping rubber inner edges so the tube stayed nestled in the tire & never touched the rim. Separate flaps were unnecessary in clinchers....

I have run up against something that is puzzling me on my 1912 Runabout (pictured) which I am re-restoring. Trying to get everything mechanically just right before I put sheet metal back on. I went through the rear axle brakes and got them cleaned up and set right. Then when I went to put the wheels on, one side did not go on all the way as shown...

Swapped the wheels, no difference.
I have not been into the rear axle, assuming previous owner restored it properly. However, I think it worthwhile to unbutton it and see what's going on. For all I know, it has the babbitt thrust still in it. Something isn't right, and there is really only one way to find out what the problem is.

Craig,
I use a paint stripper with a funnel to meld the tar out of the model T coils. Just pay attention not burning the wood on the sides.

Before putting balance beads in my tires I talked to the owner of a local tire shop. He said they put balance beads in a lot of large tires used on trucks and agricultural equipment. There is a simple tool you can buy called a nut splitter that makes removing rust on nuts a cinch. They are available in different sizes. I used a cold chisel to split nuts on exhaust manifolds on my antique tractors until I got these tools. Be careful to not mess up the threads on the bolt as you could damage the threads inside the yoke as well....

I would guess that it works like the intensifier spark plugs sold back in the Model T era. The, “intensifying” , is just a small pre-gap of around 0.010 inch before the actual spark plug gap , which makes for a little stronger spark in the cylinder under compression. So inside of the small wood box there is most likely just a solid lead with a...

Were different metals used to make Bermuda Carriage Bells or were they all stamped aluminum, meaning the actual outer bell sections? Also, does it hurt the tone quality to paint the outside of those bell sections or do they need to stay paint free!

If you install a bell, be sure. To put lock-tight on the bolts and consider putting a “catch cage” of safety wire at a safe distance around the bell so that if it comes loose it does not rattle off to the side of the road someplace during a 30 mile drive.
Don’t ask why I think this is important to tell you….
Or you could get some drilled bolts...
