Need advice on changing tube in clincher wheel

First post
In all the decades I have owned Model T's, I have never changed a tube in a clincher wheel. I have changed tires many times and always put the partially inflated tube inside the tire and installed the tire/tube as a single component on the clincher rims, but never just changed a tube.
Should I just pull one side of the tire off the rim and pull...

In an attempt to fix my out of tire balance problem I'm going to over correct. My tires and tubes are well over 20 years old. They are just starting to show weather checking along the rim. I'm going to put on new tires and tubes. At the same time I'd like to replace my demountable rims with new also as the old rims were questionable at best back...

I ordered rims from Australia... unfortunately the placement of the raised bump behind the lugs would not allow the rims to go on the felloe far enough to make contact with the rear flange so they were just running on the lugs and the front of the felloe. The nuts won't even go all the way on the lug bolts so there was no way I was going to drive...

I remember reading to retard the spark when shutting down here on the forum. But after I read it I had already removed just a bit on the back of the flapper. That did the trick.

Engine block has been stamped.... AN7754. I'm thinking it is a replacement block made after 1927 to 1941 era. It is hooked up with a 26-27 hogshead but the block does not have the extra flange area for the top of the hog's head to bolt. Would anyone have any idea where this block was manufactured?.... I used a modern commercial brass ball valve, but my son turned a piece of brass round bar stock with a hole up the middle. I JB welded the “vintage looking” brass piece over the ugly and modern looking sheet metal valve handle.

First a little back info, 2022 I had hernia surgery and then in 2023 I had shoulder surgery so my 1919 Touring car has not seen a lot of use. The engine had a complete rebuild from Gorge King around 15 years ago and has 0 issues until just lately. Maybe 500 miles sense the build. I'm running straight 40W oil. It doesn't get cold enough in Florida...

Hi all. My shut off valve, attached to the sediment bowl of the cowl tank leaks a lot when the engine stops and the valve is not shut off. Can I remove it and just use the sediment bowl shut off to stop gas flow to the carb? These extra shut off valves were not original from the factory, or were they? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks. John
Last post
The bottom line, and the direct answer to your subject line, Do I really need a carb shutoff valve? , is yes , you really need one. It's up to you what style or where to locate it. Never, ever trust the carb float valve to function properly, no matter how long it has worked flawlessly.

Have any tests been made to determine if there is a difference in HP running without magnets on the flywheel.
You would have a reduction of weight on the flywheel which would also include a reduction in enertia.
Most are using 12 volt and a distributor. Also doesn't a magneto and 4 coils give better performance than a dributor as the RPM...

I have fitted 26-7 brake drums without machining them back and they fit in the earlier pans. You just cant run the wide band and lining on them, even if you make adjustments to the band ears so they line up with the earlier pedals. It saves modifying an original Ford part.

One of the T's has a Dealer-tag which is placed on the passengers side of the car and is different from the patent or id tags in the first 2 photos I posted. I understand that this tag was indeed added by the dealer.

Been trying for a while to figure the YouTube thing out. We did a few short test videos, and finally got a 12-minute video to post. It has been a pretty tough learning process for an old timer :) We are wanting to do a lot more vintage camping with the T and to post some of our trips to YouTube. We also do modern overlanding camping with our...

Interesting Nina Leen photo series for Life Magazine, definitely a different era. Scrolling is to the right....

My sandblaster guy went a little aggressive and roughed up the outside of my rear drums. I use Rocky Mountain brakes. Can anyone tell me if that’s going to tear up my brake linings?
Last post
I agree with Andy. Depending what type of brake lining your using it takes a lot of miles for the lining to wear to get a good mating surface because the band isn't perfectly mated to the drums.

Got lucky and found some Stevens tools I was needing to add to the collection. I bought three Stevens engine lift eyes that are used to pull the engine or to help install a head when replacing the gasket. I already had one of the 1/2-inch pipe thread versions for Model Ts and have been looking for years for the other one. Found three of them in an...

Strange Transmission Brake band material

First post
I’m helping a club member with her car, and found the transmission brake band appears to have real brake linings. It was her father’s car and wasn’t driven much, I’ve checked the drum and found no burns or cracking, some light wear. Going to put Scandinavia material on the band.
Has anyone seen this before ?
IMG_9971.jpeg
Last post
Alan, more concerned with the brass and material getting into Babbitt and the quick wearing of the drums. This stuff feels like 60-80 grit sandpaper.
Would you use this material in your transmission? Trying to understand pros and cons of using this material with brass woven in.

My guess on the first photo is a 1911 Touring that went thru a tornado.
Very likely! We from California tend to not think about tornados very often. (Yet you did!)

Hello,
We ran the 1914 T at the inlaws last weekend. We discovered even more parts.
Can anyone tell me what year was this NH is from?
It appears to be all steel and complete. The float works.
Any wisdom given much appreciated.

The short throttle lever & offset choke lever arm are consistent with a 26-7 carb.

27 chassis. Engine is said to run but froze and broke the head and pushed out a core plug. Tires decent, has newer radiator (2 yrs old). Body pulled for a hotrod. Offered $1500, he is wanting more.
Am I being to cheap?

A frozen busted engine is a can of worms.
Guy called me trying to sell me one with same story. I told him we were too far apart and he did not even say a price. I told all I knew for sure might be good were the 4 connecting rods, and only worth $10 each as cores. The rest could well be scrap. Have seen it too many times.

Anyone have any idea what this manifold was intended for when new. I don't believe Model A due to the port shape. I know what the carb is from, and dont know if that's a clue or not. My only guess is Iron Duke Chevrolet.

Craig,
1. The Corcoran B&B acetylene generators may be distinguished by the tank vertical seam
next to the gas output tube (on the lower tank pictured below and a little hard to see).
Also, it has the one-piece basket inside.
The instruction sheet was found inside the generator.

For small projects I have had great success with my powder spray torch using a nickel alloy powder. Big stuff like rear main bearing webs ripped out by a broken crank I send out to Lock N Stitch in Turlock. They are the best at what they do.

We had a great turnout at the “Tour De Frost”, Sam Atkinson puts this together for the group here in St. Louis as a way to get together for lunch and tell the same stories we always tell at any event. I didn’t get an accurate count, but somewhere around 25-30 were at lunch.
A new story came up though when Sam showed us a photo of his roadster...

I thought these numbers interesting. Michigan Department of Labor conducted factory inspections and took a head count each year. Unfortunately they didn't provide a factory breakdown for 1902 and 03. The initial Ford Motor Co. numbers show a low number of employees at the Mack Avenue plant. This inspection occurred in the spring of 1904 (1899...

Vendor valves undersized, proper clearance?

Ordered a set of .015 over T style valves. Specs given we they were .327 stem. I planned to cut new guides with a 21/64 reamer (.328) and then a quick hone to get to proper size. The valves arrived and measure .3245-.3250.
Anyone see an issue running the valve a but looser than one typically would on a rebuild? I suppose its not a big deal was...
Last post
That's general advice. Refer to Ford specs for specifics.
In my opinion, .003 is too tight for exhaust valves, and about right for intake.
For an engine that is expected to run at higher speeds and loads, such as a speedster engine or a TT engine, I'd go with .004 on intake and .006 on exhaust. New assemblies need some run-in time before running...
