After months of planning and hard work, the 7th Annual Mid Atlantic Prewar Swap Meet in beautiful Luray, Virginia is now less than two-weeks away! We have 60 vendors coming from 17 different states, and will occupy 109 vendor spots. The long-range accu-weather forecast is calling for partly sunny skies and mild temperatures in the 70’s. What is used to bed the glass in the channel of the windshield frame? Same stuff as uses on Model A?
This is a 26/27 roadster
Last post
Original windscreen glasses fitted into a brass channel, which in turn fitted into the windscreen frame. This worked well in the brass frames of the early cars. When steel frames were introduced things changed. Water which used to get past the glass and the brass channel ended up in the steel frame, with obvious results. In our colonial bodied...

Painting Wood Spoke Wheels

L R Butler » Mon Apr 26, 2021 10:08 pm
First post
I'm getting ready to paint my wood spoke wheels on my 1926 truck. I'd be interested to hear recommendations on a good primer and paint. I want to paint them black. I know some people sand and stain them - what are your thoughts on this?
Last post
David, I believe the additives used in bumper paints are not likely to be compatible with paint normally use to paint wooden wheels. A good quality household enamel over properly prepared and primed wooden spokes will give years of service without cracking and deterioration. You just need to use paints from the one system for best results.

Installing new outer felt seals on my 25 TT and they just don't fit. The one that came out was about 1/8 the new one is about an inch wide. The retainer is only about an inch total. Any ideas?
Last post
There never was a felt under the cap during production. Felts have been added over the years but they are not original to the TT. If you do install or manage to install a felt under that short little cap, don't forget a washer for the bearing to rub on.

Random question. Was there any part of the Model T which was unchanged in design/material and therefore indistinguishably different through 1909 and 1927?
I assume no.
So, then that leads to my next question. What was the longest period of time that a part was manufactured unchanged and what part was it?

Identify Flywheel

Can anyone identify this flywheel for me. It appears to be a Model T flywheel, but it has the high ring of metal around the outside in place of the spacers/spools for the magnets. Was this ever issued from the factory? Was it an old time modification for something that did not run with magnets? Maybe used on a Ford Tractor or stationary motor?

Some clever soul did that to increase torque. It would be good in a truck, doodlebug, or stationary power unit.

Do it from on top.
Use a bar to wedge the spring leaf away from the lid so you can assemble it and get the screws in with the lid vertical.
I did it last week so I had a piece to take to get paint matched.

James, they are in series and connected together by the engine frame, look at the patent.
That makes the spark gaps have to be equal to equally share the spark.
The Ford Coil supplies about 9,000 AC Volts that is equally divided.

I checked Lang's and Snyder's web sites. They appear to have them. A call will tell you for sure. The Model A and Model T would be the same except for the name plate. If you get the Model A motor meter, make sure it either says jus Ford or says Boyce so it won't designate Model A.

Good day all. With Bob C.'s help (a forum contributor), I've finished a video that's been a long while in the making. Ford Motor Company issued a several page pamphlet describing the entry of two Model K and four Model R (two cars per entry) in Detroit's 24 hour sanctioned race. Ten of these nationally sanctioned ((AAA) events were held in 1907,...
Last post
My pleasure Adrian. 24 hour races were popular for a few years, then seem to have faded away, but for a few exceptions such as Le Mans and the Daytona (now Rolex) 24 hour races.
The record holder when Ford won had been a National (single car) in 1905. A 1906 24 hour race was scheduled for Detroit, but was not run.
A few clips from other 1907 24...

All That Brass!

At Chickasha I made several brass acquisitions for Hay Wagon to speedster project. These are pictures of the very brass T at Chickasha. That is a lot of brass. So how does one keep all that brass shiny? Does it tarnish? How do you get into the tight spaces to keep it shining? How often does re-polishing have to be done?
Last post
Personally, I do not like the look of polished brass. Just too cutesy and
contrived. No one polished their brass cars back in the day, and doing so
now is just another case of over-'restoration' , which to my thinking is both
historically inaccurate (for cars being used) and just trying too hard on the
part of current owners to make their cars...

For the last couple months, I've been thinking about you either purchasing or making a manifold cooker. Since the assembled ones are out of my price range, I just had to make one. The picture should explain themselves, but feel free to ask questions. The total cost was 3 dollars and some rivets and steel angle iron.

I think you are going to have to find a used tube. You will note that the bottom of the one shown, pickup end, is pinched partly shut. While you might be able to duplicate that with solder, getting the orifice and length the correct size might be iffy. If your car has black centers on the hubcaps, and the paint has worn off in spots, an easy fix is a Sharpie marking pen. It's easy to go around the letters with one, and it blends right in. If you go onto a letter, it will polish right off.

The magneto test as described in the Ford HCCT manual says to connect the car magneto to the HCCT test stand and run the engine at a moderate speed.
The Ammeter should register at least 0.8 Amps.
There is no criteria for a minimum voltage stated in the manual.
This test would be the same on all HCCTs with or without a voltmeter.

Doesnt matter. Important that pin & spring ride on top of one of those threads. That pin keeps the gear from vibrating into engagement. If the counterweight comes off it must be replaced back on in the proper position for that pin alignment. If you miss that alignment the pin hole & inside counter bore can be redrilled.

Did Ford ever cut X oil groves in T rods? My thinking is the X gives the oil a path in —-but it also gives the oil a path out under pressure. And I’m thinking the surface area of the bearings is greatly diminished leading to a shortened rod life.

Dan, that rod doesn't seem to be a popular idea at that time, no mention of it in service Bulletins for 1926/7 or available as a spare part even into the 1930's parts books. Maybe a bit like the tin piston

Thanks Steve. I certainly enjoyed your vacuum system and setup. I should add that the wind also carried the sand next door. We like the new neighbors better and that is another reason.
I did enjoy the sandblasting hour after hour and the funny places it took my mind. I have thought about building a sandblast cabinet.
I'm not sure my mind came back...

Just examined my McLaren wheels, they need the lugs welded to be safe. Has anyone taken the next step and had the welding done? Back side of wheel or both sides? Also what have you done about the galvanize that gets removed during welding. Thanks

Well here’s an update on my McLaren wheels purchased around 2007. After dismounting the spare I found the lug was welded on the inside. Thanks Mark McLaren for a professional product! I really did need the practice breaking down the tire anyway!!!!!

Adding brake lights and turn signals on Brass Car

I recently purchased a 1914 Touring car (build date October 1913). I plan to add a electrical system with battery to power brake lights and turn signals on the car. My first thought was to add a second brass oil tail lamp on the passenger side and put 1157 style 12 volt lights (dual filament) in each one of the lamps and basically turn them into...

When I installed directional and brake light on my '15 Touring car, I went to great lengths to insure that I did no damage at all to the oil running lights or oil tail lights. The wick assemblies are still in all the lights. I took them apart, and put the carriage bolts in a lathe, and drilled a hole through the carriage bolt, in order to bring...

I have 2 26 T's with cowl gas tanks. Most other T's have a tank under the front seat and a few even have the tank under the back seat! So I’ve fixed the stripped head bolt problem, turns out the threads in the block were pretty good, tap went in and out with little issue after the hole was cleaned. Valves looked ok and no sticking. Cleaned the rest of the engine and took care to keep cylinders clean of debris, then put in a new copper head gasket that my friend had and put it all...

Corey, you can eliminate the screwdriver, needle nosed pliers and pen knife and add a pair of scissors, phillips driver, reamer and saw by carrying a Victorianox stainless steel multi tool. I feel lost without mine. my shifter is a 4 Sidchrome unit which opens to 9/16 .

Has anyone on this forum had contact with this person?...

Question....
I purchased a Model T that was built in October of 1913 and it is titled as a 1913 car, but that is the same month they started the 1914 body style.

Here in Florida, they asked for the serial number of my T. They immediately entered the year as 1927 and came up with a weight for the car (Florida has a tax based on weight). I guess some states know the engine numbers of a T.

12 volt starter

First post
I am starting a pie wagon project and plan to have interior lighting which will recuire 12 volt system. I have read the posts suggesting that running 12 volts to the starter is hard on the flywheel and ring gear. My question can I have my 6 volt starter converted to 12 volts and if so would the converted starter be as hard on the fly wheel?
Last post
Why not just buy a 12 volt battery and run a separate circuit for your lighting? Cheaper than replacing a starter. You probably have a charger already, so you only need a battery.

Curious whether any early 1909 Tourings were detailed with Black accents the way the Red Touring was. This would be seen on the fender and body welts, as well as the door frames. Hard to tell from some original photos where even the red body pin stripes are difficult to see.

I have a frame that appears to be a '25 ( only 2 rivets on on hand brake pawl ) It has a serial number C726397, does the C indicate Canadian? Also the front crossmember is located on top of the side rail instead of above, and the side rail is stepped to allow for this. Can anybody shed some light on this ?
Last post
Thanks, yes I am starting to think it may have had some changes to suit some ones needs. Frame is super nice condition with only mild surface rust. It may end up under one of my cars.

Last post
The plug is typical Ediswan type, with the dual in-line nubs to twist and lock in the socket. Bayonet style.
These plugs could be had in rubber (plastic today) plug or metal banded.
The metal band holds up better, but cost more in the day. Used mostly for plugging to sockets for trouble lamps or dash lamps.
