I'm working on a local history project where photographs of these Model Ts will be featured. Does anyone know what years these cars are from? I believe the first photo is of a Touring Car and the second is a Fordoor Sedan. The license plate on the car in photo #2 is from 1930. I'm not sure about the years these cars were constructed. Does the axle get bushings where the wishbone and spindles go in?

I took apart the whole front end only to put it back together because the car got the death wobble.
Does the front axle where the spindle goes in get a bushing?
Does the spindle where the wishbone goes in get a bushing?
Both are either so worn I can't tell if there is a bushing or there is no bushing needed.
Thank you!
Last post
Some more modern cars have king pins which are anchored in the steering arms, and the wishbones do have bushes. Bushes are used for applications where parts rotate. Think transmission/fan/brake cams etc. on a T model. They are removable so they can be replaced when worn. Dan Hatch steers clear of describing his stationary axle fix components as...

I am installing the new top on my 1927 coupe. The last item is the aluminum rain gutters. What is the best way to paint them?
Last post
Hi Bruce. You mentioned your gutters were aluminum. Are you sure? Back in 1926, aluminum was hard to come by and considered a precious metal. If it is aluminum, it will have no rust so under no circumstances should you use acid. Acid will turn the aluminum black and dissolve it in no time. In your photos, I think I see a little rust. If so, your...

When the cooling system is in good condition and clean, the thermo syphon system works very well. If you do use a water pump, you should also include a thermostat. For Canadian made T parts. Many forgings and stampings were made by Dominion Stamping which started making parts as a sub-supplier in 1913. In most of their parts that I have or have seen they mark them DS in an oval. But perhaps if they later did crankshafts, the D might stand for Dominion as the manufacturer.

If I am buying both a new hood and radiator for my 25TT, do I care if its High hood or low hood?
My firewall is 28” wide x 21 1/2” tall not counting the little bump for the radiator rod.
Availability is more important to me than authenticity.
Last post
Another way to distinguish a high dash (firewall) from a low dash is by counting the coil box terminal holes. The low dash has 10 holes for 10 coil box terminals. The high dash only has nine. The coil box battery terminal was eliminated (along with the switch on the coil box) when the high dash was introduced.
Respectfully submitted,

Has anyone tried using a heavy gas such as argon to reduce the amount of dross created? It would certainly stay in the melting pot.
Last post
A small bit of beeswax, the size of a marble, added to and stirred into the melted babbitt just before pouring will put most of the tin back in suspension. The “dross” in most cases is the separation of tin or other alloys. Skimming and removing it can dramatically change the alloy percentage. I dont like the smoke created from beeswax, so just...

Compared to Magneto headlamps, I would go with that setup right away for reliability.
I find mag headlights plenty reliable. They're reliably dangerous — too dim and too limited in range for safe driving. :)

I had no reference to reset the angles between the two ends of the rod when re-fastening the one end. Fortunately, on this 1912 item, the other end is threaded, and the adjustment made, purely by eye as the rod sat on the car. On the later fixed end rods, is there a simple way to make this setting, or is it rarely significant enough to require...

I bought 4 of these 5033HS clips that are called hood shelf mounted wire clips.
Do I use two on each side?

I suspect that timing gears in 4 cylinder engines tend to be noisier than those in 6 or 8 cylinder engines, since they are less uniformly driven and loaded. I'd also think that a Model T Ford's low speed 4 cylinder engine, which has no cam-driven oil pump, would tend to have especially noisy timing gears. Lack of a harmonic balancer might further...

Are the balls in the 5 ball carb all the same weight? We have a large 5 ball on our racer and it runs rough. Not sure if it’s due to the carb, or can timing, or a combination of factors.
Thanks,

The skirts on the inside of the caps should tell you your ball diameter unless they have been cut off. Even if they were, hopefully some sort of tell-tale remains of the diameter of the skirt(s). Of the 5, I'll bet you can cypher out the original ball size from one of them.

Here is my question....If I drive my car reasonably and use high quality...

I am running one engine that was rebuilt in the mid '60s. It has run 30,000 miles or more and still runs well without burning any oil. I broke a crankshaft in it. Probably from poor 4th bearing alignment. It still gives free starts and a chuff when turning the key on after several days. I run it under 35mph nowadays but used to drive it quite...

I was reading in a 1967 (!) Vintage Ford about an 1911 touring that was owned by Ray and Naomi Nelson.
Does (did?) anybody know Ray and Naomi, or any descendants, or their car? In 1967 they were in California.

Cool stuff, Eric. Now I need to find out about the other 1911 with california Horseless Carriage plates 1636. I wonder if it is the same car?
Is the 1909 with Nevada plates 18, #220?

Collecting tools is a never ending process. Collecting tools to a year specific compilation is a Don Quixote task also. Here’s my completed ‘1915’ pouch and the like.
Was fun collecting…may need an adjustment or two as time goes on...took over a year. Lots of help and support from a whole bunch of forum...

Even properly torqued fasteners can loosen in normal service, especially in new assemblies. Some late model new vehicle literature advises retorquing certain items, such as dual wheel lug fasteners. Early car owner manuals often advised owners to perform an inspection and general tightening up of the vehicle frome time to time. As dealer networks...

Hello
Please review the two pictures attached. See how the trunk has been molded (bondo’d?) into the rear of the body?
It is not a fiberglass body. The body and trunk are both steel. Is it safe to presume that this is the result of an improper “restoration”?

Because you are thinking about going with a Model T speedster, before going to the trouble of removing the 26 roadster body, think about making it a 26 T Go-Job, as in a late 1930’s low bucks high school hot rod. A mildly worked T engine with high compression flat head and a bigger carburetor, maybe change to 1926 T wire wheels. You can get a hot...

The back rest spring attaches to a three clasps screwed to the vertical wood strips, the back spring rests on top of the seat spring. To remove pull the bottom out and lift up. You may find the clasps in your supplies some where, they are very easy to make DSC00248.JPG DSC00248.JPG

Can one use stock head bolts with p-heads?
Yes, new high head bolts are best IMO, Kevin supplies w/ each P head the proper s.s. thin washers to put under each bolt head. Washers are needed to prevent galling the surface of the aluminum head around the bolt holes. Thin washers of course to allow sufficient depth of the bolt into the block.

The front passenger door rubs and sticks out at the bottom the fire wall rubs the back of the motor. Does the firewall bracket go on the inside or the outside of the firewall?
Which one goes on the left or right? I bought a new hinge thinking that was it but it did not help any.
Thanks in advance...

I have aligned the door with a piano wire and a screen door turnbuckle. Pull the door panel off and put the wire between the top corner close to the windshield and the lower right corner . Put the turnbuckle in the middle where it does not contact the wood and snug it up. It will pull the corner back in. The wood has loosened and relaxed.

How Tight Should These Nuts Be

First post
How tight should these nuts be? Is there recommended torque value?
1) Spring shackle nuts.
2) Nuts on bolts attaching front and rear springs to the frame.
Last post
Spring shackles as an assembly should be 'tight', if they bind on either the spring or perch that issue needs to be corrected in a way that permits full and tight assembly of the shackles. Shackle bolts left loose promote rapid wear of both the shackles and spring/perch bushings. jb
