My '26 speedster came with a low head. I have a high head in my stash. It looks like the high head has larger water jackets (better cooling?). What would your suggestions be on which would be best and why?

To answer your question, it kind of depends on what radiator you're using. The low head water outlet lines up well with a brass...

Here are some methods

Even though Ford used 777's from the factory, I have found 888's to be a perfect replacement, and less weight too.

Russ Furstnow makes an excellent copy of the leather spring pads.

Maybe the 3/16 laminated glass is for flat side windows in modern cars, anything to reduce weight and cost. As indicated, for windscreens, 1/4 is the rule.

I don't think the line across the radiator on the touring is a fender brace. It appears to be attached to the radiator shell. I'd guess it's an accessory or owner added item for the purpose of retaining a lower radiator winter front to prevent the radiator from freezing in cold weather. It evidently isn't for mounting a license plate.

Thanks Dan. Now here is where things are confusing to me. Tim above mentioned his #1 Top Socket was 25 in overall length. My new reproduction #1 Socket is 26 overall. (My 1915 Socket is 25 ). Tim shows a measurement for the #1 Socket & Bow at a total length of 36 . According to Dan's post, the amount of the bow protruding should be 6¼ ...which...

A few comments: 1) If you are reaming the rear bushing to compensate for a front or center cam bearing bored off center, that's just plain bad practice. Replace the bearings or adjust your method of boring them to get them concentric with the OD. Reaming them to size in a bench vise is a good way to get them off center. They should always be bored...

I haven’t seen the easiest solution mentioned yet. I remove the spare tire on my ‘26 roadster. Only takes a minute. That gives you much better access to the battery and you can easily lift it with a strap.

With the firewall and rear mounting frame in place, use stiff cardboard to make a pattern that fits the two components. That will give you the shape you need to cut in the steel sheet. Custom made for a custom fitment. No need to follow a plan .

Anyone had trouble with 3095 plugs leaking compression at the top metal crimp where it contacts the porcelain on the OD?

Yes ,compression and unburned fuel , that is why I quit using them. The 1's made in the USA didn't do this, but the last set i bought were mexico made and they leaked between the porcelain and metal. I found some nos AC spark...

I can not give you a quick answer because what I think you are building is around 10% (guess here) of the speedsters built.
That makes getting information harder.
I don't know what is in your head so I can only give you areas to look and maybe something will stick.

Most I have seen use a setup like a '15-'16 firewall to cowl...

I will be attending again this year. I recommend this swap meet. I see potential for it growing each year. I did very well last year. Both buying and selling. Metallurgy may differ. Plates that have been bent and straightened will be somewhat hardened, which may affect their magnetic behavior. Soft steels magnetize easily, but will not hold magnetism well. Harder steels and steel alloys will hold magnetism. Field pieces uses in association with permanent magnets are usually very soft steel.

Extremes have a way of working against themselves. There is no cold , only more or less heat.

I had 2 adjuster bolts shear the first time I tried a self locking set.

A good feature of the FACT tester is that you SEE the current waveform, with its peak current and time-to-fire, and any follow on sparks.

Nothing yet so far in 2026

It has only gone above 32 deg F for a few short afternoons so far this year, weeks ago.
And for over 2 weeks it has been single digits at night.
The 6 to 12 of snow and ice is very solid and has been hanging around for weeks now locking everything up.
The roads are white, from salt!
I was trying to use the lathe today...

The picture gives a perspective of how large those base plates & press tools are. I hadnt realized.
We have learned there are many different ways to remove that low drum bushing.

I believe there are two kinds of black clinchers — Blockley, and all the others. Those others are really all the same tire wearing various costumes (Wards, Firestone, Universal, etc.), with the same materials and manufacturing, made in the same factory. Is that true? Does it also apply to white clinchers?

1917 through 1919, most of the country was feeling very patriotic, and patriotic symbols were very popular. Things like Uncle Sam radiator ornaments for a few years were fairly common.

Good question! Not sure what Martin meant by tilted though. Like you suggest or leaning back like a later model vs upright on a 1915.

I beg to differ. Sheetmetal fitted under tension will be stressed. Twisting/wracking of the frame in use will futher stress, leading o cracking in the panels at the mounting points.
Using a podger bar to align holes in a static situation like a water tank or building frame is not the same as doing so on in a dynamic situation.

I have a Z head to go on it and a few other things to do when the weather gets better. I have a zenith carb and intake I might try as well. My 22 is a rolling accessory magnet.

Actually, it should work if you read the trade journal articles or advertisements.

Why?

Because it came with a PAIR of hub drums and hooks. Therefore, you installed drums and cables/ropes on BOTH rear hubs.

It should not be necessary to turn down the bushings. However variations in spindle bores may mean some bushings are tighter than others. When pressing them home, stop a little from fully set and blow out any swarf under the head created in the process. Then press fully home.

I tight bush may need more reaming than another. It will all even out...

Oh, news to me, got a set of open express plans from Jay in 2023. He posted on this on the forum July 2024. Still have the plans if anyone wants to do an open T express.

Aluminum Warford input & output bearings are the same size as Model A bearings just like a Muncie. I use the double sealed ball bearings.

Did this a week ago, lift, load leveler (H.F.), and 4 eyelets into the block. The eyelets came from Tractor Supply and are only rated for 300 lbs each.

If you have lathe access you can make lids from billet material.
I made a set for a different brand from brass. Knurled the outside.
You gotta make a cutter that profiles the very round thread.

Cleaning, stripping rust & old paint, and repainting all the various small chassis/body parts.
Now I'm eyeballing my firewall, an original in solid condition, but finish worn down to bare wood in spots. Thinking I'll try repairing, bleaching, cleaning, prepping, lightly sand and refinish vs buying a new one. I vacillated back & forth with leaving...

#2 demonstrates that with correct pulling, a kickback is harmless. I broke a wrist by cranking a tractor the stupid way, and that was a serious reminder that correct cranking matters.

Built a '15 speedster years ago and wrapped the Fordite wheel with overlaps of friction tape, then applied coat of clear spar varnish. Looked good and felt like a race car in my hands. :D

I came across picture #7 a few years back, caption states crating for overseas shipping.

The RHD car is a Duncan and Fraser built car. Typical features are the crowned mudguards, curved cowl and brass cowl vents, one piece frameless windscreen and cast brass windscreen pillars Side lights put it at 1913-14.

Forget the short straight edge. A taut string line will give a better over-all indication of any sag in the frame. Takes only a few minutes to do, and can be quite revealing! There is no better time to make corrections than when the frame is bare.

Allan is correct although the photo doesn't show it very well. The felloe on the left is loose lug but when I bought the car there was a fixed-lug rim mounted to the wheel. No two wheels were alike on my car when I bought it so I've spent some time acquiring felloes that match. Even so, I have a pair of Hayes on the front and Ford's on the back....

Cal Stewart recorded this as if he was informing friends about his new car. It’s interspersed with his laughs. Several artists after Cal Stewart recorded the story but I believe the original is the best.

That wishbone that takes normal nuts is the very first version of under-the-axle-wishbone . If you own a '22 then it migrated there from an earlier car some time in the past.

Chris, I am wondering if the difference between your '24 and '26 on the spring cup clearance is from the different width brake drum and push ring?

New spokes are too easy to install for you to waste valuable time and effort trying to restore spokes that are too far gone and dangerous…
