Since I made electric horns for Model T's I did some research to see how I was going to do it. During that research I noticed some things. Just slapped the 26-27 tranny together but the thrust space between the clutch disc “basket” and brake drum is only .005 or so with the three .042 spacers, is it OK to get one of the older .025 washer from the parts folks to pick up that extra .017 or so thrust space?

Big brake drum, ok, easy fix, order the 3320/BW. That and 2 original washers should put you back in spec and clutch pack as normal.

I have a paperback reprint Ford service manual that has the last XLII chapter for the improved car. Had it about 20 years. The last page in the improved car section is a non-starter wiring diagram. Kind of ironic I guess since it’s for an improved car. Interesting.

Wrapped around the wooden armrest and tacked to the bottom inner wood rail is a piece of heavy cardboard. Is this correct or did a previous owner come up with it on his own?

On a '17, there is burlap or jute between the cardboard and the wood armrest as you show in the picture of the '20.
The stuffing doesn't go on top the armrest - it's basically a hard surface and the upholstery is nice and tight on the armrest. I'd post some pictures but I'm at my parents' house, not on my own computer.

I’m a complete novice on the model T. I moved two years ago and parked my 1917 in the garage where it still is today. I decided today to go out and start the car. I checked oil, gas, and coolant levels first and attempted to start. It actually started in about 2 or 3 pulls but wouldn’t stay running. I reattempted to start it with no further luck....

I removed the tank and carburetor today. I poured xylene in the tank and did several rinses that brought about two or three cups of nasty varnish like sludge out. The carb was actually pretty clean. I ordered a new set of gaskets to reinstall the carb. Will continue to work on getting the tank as clean as I can. It’s really not too bad though....

Hi folks,
Back in February, I came upon what appears to be a 1914 Model T Touring that was converted to a pickup on display at the Oakland Museum of California. It's the centerpiece of the Great Depression/Dust Bowl display. Great museum!

1911 was the only year that Ford produced the special Torpedo and open roadsters that used a slightly longer hood (mentioned above). A lot of people like to use the torpedo hood on brass speedsters.

I have a Ford NH that I would like to rebuild. I would like to know any differences between this one and a Holley NH. Are they the same internally?
Was it a lack of production capacity at Holley that caused Ford to start producing this carb under the Ford name? OR was there some other reason?
Thanks
Last post
Re; By the way, the early version of the Ford NH has a screw plug on the side the later version does not. Just reassembled one of those. It has Ford cast into it with no name plate.

Thanks Wayne. Gil, to further put the costs into context, a dollar in 1907 was about the equivalent of about $25 today. That makes the average cost to own the Ford N would equal about $13,700 per year. Not bad, but still significant.

Dave, the ECCT capacitor test is very sensitive to leakage so Capacitor test results can easily be skewed as a result. Missed timed/not enough advance or too retarded or running way to lean. How far do you run the spray needle when driving? Running way too lean is will do this too. Unburnt fuel helps cool valves and exhaust manifold as it pass out the engine.

I can't find anyone to replate my rear view accessory mirror. It is an early style. There doesn't seem to be anyone in Southern California that can do this any more. Can anyone recommend a source? I don't care where it is.

You can always try it yourself.
Watch the you-tube video and you can see it's a doable project for the home shop.

Emergency brake as service brake

First post
Has anyone ever tried to use the emergency brakes as service brakes ('26-'27) with cables or slotted rods from the brake pedal through an equalizer? I'm thinking of using a 3:1 rear end and will want better braking as I'll lose some with the rear end change.
Last post
I normally refuse to diss something....but here is something to think through. My first T was a Fordor and it came with some sort of equalizer installed. I was taught that fast stops went through the stick...regular stops through the pedal.
One day I came over a crest of a northern Illinois mountain ( read elevation maybe 25 ft) in high gear and...

Yesterday was week 7 since my right knee replacement. Being in recovery during the corona virus isolation was probably a good thing, as couldn't go anywhere anyway. Yesterday, I drove Henrietta 15 miles out to the farm to get some photos of our replacement grain truck, a Ford Louisville 900 of course.

Headers for a Model T

I started this thread as, suggested, a continuation of one in Classifieds for a WTB 4 in 1 Header. That discussion lead to the following bits of information
-Red's Headers made and offered a header for Model T's at one time, but the demand was low and they quit making and stocking them.
-Red's is still listing a Model A header on their website....
Last post
Peter, I love the look of your header. I was wanting to run mine under the body in a somewhat original path. Your header would also work for me as it could run under the passenger side splash apron. I have functioning doors on my roadsters tub that I am using as part of my speedster project.

Piston ring seating

What are options when you can’t get your piston rings to seat?
I’ve ball honed cylinders with a 45 degree cross hatch, new iron rings are of proper size and end gaps are good.
Cylinder walls are not ovaled.
First attempt I only got up to 20 lbs. on all cylinders and even at that I had blowby.
Upon disassembly the cylinder walls have a light...

Update on progress. I found another set of nos rings that are .010 over. End gaps on old rings in the ring travel area were .035+. I will use a sizing hone to even out the cylinder bore and size the rings for an end gap of around .010.
I also received a email from Dan H. who read my post on this site, and he has some roller 34” tires he is willing...

I expect in May lots of people will come out, and with inadequate testing and tracking nearly everywhere that will bring on a second wave, maybe worse than the first. By all accounts there won't be a vaccine before next spring, which means isolate or risk infection. I intend to isolate in a Model T (when I get one running). :)

Hello all! I decided it was finally time to see how well my 1916 T had endured Maine's long winter. First I began to do my usual start up procedure of checking/adding fluids, jacking up one of the rear wheels and pulling out the choke. Although It usually takes about 3-7 minutes of cranking and messing around with controls, this is normal...

Skyler, I put Star Tron in my gas for the winter. I do not know if it is the same, better, or not as good as Sta Bil. As long as you put something in there you should be good for the winter. Then I drive the car a bit so I know the gas mix is in the carb. Then I turn off the gas and drain the carb from the bottom. Your method should work just as...

I need to fabricate the aluminum stick (for lack of a better word) on a SWAN A-1-F carb. I can make one from pictures, but if someone has a complete carb and would make a couple of measurements for...

This tool is marked “Truth”. It came with a Truth “model T front bearing race press” I purchased. It looks like it’s for a bearing race because of the taper but the bearing race would be close to 3” in diameter. The 2 pieces on the one end are spring loaded and can both be pushed into the diameter of the shaft.

Really.... thanks. Good to know. Will certainly take care of it.

I’m looking at the model T judging guidelines, 4th edition and it says under 1915 headlights (180) magneto style, single contact.... my question is were these lights wired in parallel? If they were single contact it wouldn’t be possible to wire them in series as the wiring diagram indicates?
Last post
There are a number of ways to regulate the magneto output voltage to the head lights to maintain a fairly constant voltage / brightness. there was a article about using a standard model T spark coil. coil/core to make a magnetic magneto voltage regulator. or go electronic rectifier / regulator.
see magneto voltage control pg 86 Tinkerin tips....

O.K., So, if you have been following my 1924 T engine from ^#$&* saga, you know that the collective advice here recommended exchanging the damaged coil ring for one that was rebuilt, which we did. It arrived last week and is very nice. I took a compass to check for polarity, thinking it would have the usual + and - orientation. It is as close to...

Our buddy, the late, great Murray Fahnestock, writes if a magneto can support a two-pound cast iron piston, it is properly magnetized. One pound is borderline. If Murray says two pounds is sufficient, would one notice an appreciable improvement in magneto performance if the magnets could support four pounds? Or is there a point of diminishing...

I am looking for suggestions for direct replacement 6 volt LED bulbs for Tail lights and period correct turn signals. These are single contact and double contact parallel pin bulbs. I have found numerous 12 volt versions in both white and red for less than $2 each but still looking for 6 volt versions.
Any suggestions?

I've never used any of these but it gives me hope that they are listed.
