I just reviewed the 1906-07 Canadian import ledgers for Ford K and N. Both list Holley Bros. as the maker of “steering gear” including throttle and lead (spark) levers. My guess is Holley initially made the steering columns, but at some point Dodge took over that order, or contributed too (by 1908, several thousand N and S/SR may have necessitated...

But we have an advantage over these guys, we have access to the original parts drawings when we fabricate a part, while they have to reproduce a part from a surviving (and broken) example. And they are very(!) good at it.

I wouldn’t say early Ford expert. However, I doubt anyone has more research at their fingertips regarding Model K, and Model B to a lesser extent.

I find it interesting that the publication was Hawaii Territory and the British word bonnet was used as the hood over the engine. A lot of newspaper articles in that era got mixed up with automotive nomenclature. The automobile was still so new, and evolving quickly, that things like how the cylinders were arranged was often reported incorrectly.

I am shocked at our loss.
Geoff was a wonderful fellow to take over the Newsletter work sometime after I retired.
He was eager to learn and did a bang-up job from the get go.

Henry Ford attended Port Hurons first ever auto races on July 4th, 1905. He drove a stripped down Model B Ford touring car to the fastest mile time of the meet, although a four cylinder Cadillac beat the 4 cyl Ford on a head to head contest. The Ford mile time of 1 minute 26 seconds equaled 41 mph on the half mile track....

Thank you Carl. Wish it was still there. Many key racing events involving Henry Ford and Frank Kulick occurred there. The 24 hour win in 07, Frank Kulick’s record attempt and near fatality in Oct 07, and Ford and Kulick’s victory over the Blitzen Benz in September 1911 are major examples.

That 1917 date looks close as the rear fenders are not crowned. Nice wheels!

As of this 1911 article, the Hanks own an Oldsmobile. In most cases I'v found, former Model K owners move on to other large expensive cars, as one might expect, although in a few cases they buy a Model T.

All the drums are sold except the gear drum with the cracked pin holes.

I knew that several model Ks, both touring cars and roadsters, had had windshields back in the day, and that a couple touring cars have them now.
But I also like the wind in my face feel of open speedsters and other cars early enough to have had no windshield when new.

You can substitute an early Model T handle for the NRS handle. You will need to make a new crank handle bolt since NRS cars use USS course threads, but Model T’s use SAE threads.

From the description of the event, there were two White steamers, a society lady in a yellow touring car and a young lady learning to drive her runabout. Must have been a great sight.

893 miles, divided by 25 mph, gives a total driving time of 36 hours, approximately. If they drove 10 hours per day, that would have been about 4 days total. Wonder if they ever had their trip written up in a newspaper?

I know Henry absolutely detested the piece-work pay arrangement that the Dodges had with their workers, but this situation must have added fuel to the fire.
