What has happened to healthcare costs is an outrage. It would probably cost over $30 now !

Re: Healthcare in 1943
My mother's parents had 3 children, my mom, an older sister and a younger brother. Both girls were born at home, but my uncle Louie was born in San Jose Hospital (San Jose, CA) in 1927. When it was time for mom and baby to go home, my grandfather went to the business office to settle up. He didn't have any money so he cut a deal with the hospital. The hospital took the equivalent value in prunes, which he raised and dried on his ranch in the nearby foothills.
The best part of the story is that the following they contacted him and wanted to buy his prune crop.

That would be about 500.00 in today’s money. The average cost now is most likely over 30 k

Maybe that is the reason the birthrate in the U.S. has dropped!
We have 5 children and when the first two were born, we did not have medical insurance and the rate was about $250 for pre-natal care and delivery. The hospital was also about $250 which came to a total of $500. Later we got medical insurance and the younger ones were born after we had insurance. The co-pay was about the same as the entire bill was before insurance.
