Way OT, but still older...93 Toyota Supra upgrade. Super Zoom Zoom !!

Post by Ruxstel24 » Wed Mar 11, 2020 1:55 pm

Maybe of interest to some of the muscle car guys.
93 Supra 3.0L I-6 twin turbo....320hp, 6spd manual RWD.
Customer is having me upgrade the whole car basically to a single larger turbo and in the end it will be putting 600hp at the wheels !!
Here’s a couple before pictures...Oh and after I get done it’s off to the body shop for a complete paint job.

I started underneath a couple months ago and had to move it off the lift. Back on and been getting things accomplished.
Complete new exhaust system, old one off.
New clutch is necessary, so I did that first along with a seal leak at the shifter shaft...Thankfully the transmission was out, ended up having to split the rear case off to get the tiny little $9 seal out from the inside.
But the transmission is mated back up to the engine and just a few bolts and the driveshaft left. Got all the bottom exhaust manifold nuts loose while the transmission was out, since a new manifold is being used.

Nope, no luck on a gear Dallas...still waiting for Joe. Saw some 11 tooth at Marietta, but I got plenty of those.

A friend does these in the Dallas area. It is all he does. Those Supras sent from all
over the world for him to build into drag monsters. It is an interesting process to watch.
Much different than my 60's stuff !
More people are doing it today than ever before !

Back at it again....not much going on around here. I’m open, but no one is putting money in their cars. So got the wife’s Subaru in and did some needed repairs and a few more things I found while on the lift.

My goal today is to get this conglomeration of a turbo/exhaust manifold off.
Piece by piece had to come off to get to the nuts. Piping and a shield and vacuum lines...etc.
Now I can see the upper nuts, all will needed heated up to get loose like the bottom ones did.

You have more patience than I. Plastic, rubber and aluminum. Seems every plastic clip I touch breaks and parts froze together with rust or corrosion. If you cant turn a 100 rear old nut that is 50% rusted away, I dont want to do it. :D

I got the old stuff off yesterday...quite a pile it made.
Did a mock fit on the new. All the studs have to be swapped with shorter ones. I just realized the kit has new fuel pumps and the tank has to come out to swap them. Good thing I haven’t got the driveshaft or exhaust in place yet. :P

Holy cats! There's a lot of stuff crammed in there!
And you didn't replace the alternator yet while it's half tore apart on that side?
Cool project Dave.

I am looking forward to more coverage . I am concerned about an old engine with that much added stress. I turbocharged a stock Corvair engine in my sand rail many years ago. One of the problems was crank case pressure. I could't keep oil in it. I finally put two 3/4" breather hoses from the valve covers to the air filter cover. That did it! Holly suffering catfish did that thing run! It was an air research turbo off of an Oldsmobile, I blocked off the pressure relief system. Won many races with that set up. Thanks for posting. jw

This is kinda a fill in job, when I don’t have other people trying to get in for “normal” repairs...
Had a lot of big jobs come in and haven’t had time to get back into the Yota.
Located a correct pair of wire terminal crimping pliers. Got the fuel rail in place with new injectors. Different connectors at the injectors required new terminals and connectors.
New and old connectors shown in second pic.

Can anyone say tedious ?!
