$5 Rigid shop vac!

Post by ivaldes1 » Wed Mar 18, 2020 1:34 am

So I picked up a Rigid shop vac someone put out on the curb. All the parts and hoses were there. Took it home, plugged it in, dead of course. Took it apart, checked continuity on the thermal fuse, there wasn't any. So I ordered a new one for $6 only comes in a 5 pack, soldered one on and...it works! Sweet! -- IV

I have gotten a lot of stuff that way. Sometimes it's a low cost fix and sometimes it goes back out on the curb! Just picked up a Bosch dish washer, might need a seal on bottom of door but don't know yet.
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

Huh! I thought I was the only one willing to do something like that. My son has it figured out. He found this and brought it to dad to fix. My one grand daughter is 7 and in basket ball. Now that they are out of school, she needs to practice. Grampa will take care of it!

The centuries old sickness: "Hell, I can fix that!" is far older than any virus!
Worked in a little shop for a short time in between "careers" and told a fellow that walked in:
"We can fix almost anything but a broken heart."
:)
That trolling motor was just too far gone tho when it got here. I turned the commutator segments smooth again but they were paper thin already.
My greatest failure.
It lasted a little while in the water...
Blessed are the fixers. :)
Since I lost my mind mind, I feel more liberated

Said it many times.

"I can make almost anything but money or music, and I can fix almost anything but a horse race or an election."

Talked to a guy the other day whose son found a NICE couch on the side of road. Took it home and found out why on side of road. Full of bed bugs!

Leo v S, Corruption, and dishonesty, have been with us since before the first pre-human began to walk upright. Yet, I firmly believe that it has never been as bad as it has gotten in the past 40 years.
Yeah. That is just my opinion.

I would have either put the couch in a van in the hot sun or vacuumed it thoroughly then dusted it with DE and leave it outside for 3 weeks and vacuum it again. Let me explain: In my line of work we have to frequently repel bed bugs. Diatomaceous Earth(DE), temperatures above 120 F (Hot car or van), and licensed pesticides work but are expensive. DE works and is cheap but it works slow, has to be down for 3 weeks minimum. Things that don't work: Pyrethrin based stuff you get at the home store. They are resistant. Those only work if you drown them in it. Frequent vacuuming helps to remove adults and eggs, mattress en casements and bed post interceptors are good.

Ignacio, look into Cimexa dust for bed bugs. Far superior to DE and still cheap. I have been a licensed exterminator for 27 years and while I don't do much bed bug work (by choice) when I do this is what I use.

That couch reminds me of an TV commercial with some kids driving around, see a couch becide the road, load it into their car and go a few blocks before they are driven out of the car by the smell of the couch--which is again, beside the road.
As for blaming the second engineer, do you know why you can't electrocute the railroad engineer?

When I bought my 1st house I was a Jr in high school. Worked two jobs and was always broke. One day while going to town I spy'd a fridge laying in the ditch and looked nice. It was on a sharp curve so I guessed it fell off and someone would be back to pick it up, as the food inside was still cold.
The next day it was still there so it went home with me. It was better than what I had. Cleaned it up, screwed the handle back on and it was in the house when I sold it years later.

I'm amazed at the amount of perfectly good things that people throw out instead of dropping it off at the Goodwill or giving it away on Craigsilst.

Even broken items are worth trying to give away on Craigslist first before relegating them to the trash.

Last fall, a neighbor a few doors down from me threw out a lawn mower because it was "making a lot of noise."

It turned out the plastic trail shield had been pushed up under the deck so the blade was hitting it. That required a five second fix.

I gave it a complete tune-up and then sold it back to him.

Also last fall, my parents' neighbor threw out the Cub Cadet below. It had 1/2" of varnish in the carburetor bowl - it was so bad I could smell it from five feet away. I gave it a complete tune-up and replaced the blade and sold it on Craigslist within 24 hours of listing it.

Funny the things people won't fix. Many years ago, my dad bought for a hundred bucks a nice older half-ton pickup truck. It had been through three people's hands before he got it, everyone said the rod knock was so bad the engine had to have been ruined. We towed it home, and he and I started to work on it. Turned out one of the previous owners had hit something that bounced up and dented the engine's oil pan.

In 1967, I found a 1955 Chevy 210 Two Door Sedan that my parents paid $75.00 for for my graduation present. My lifelong friend and I went to pick it up and the old guy that had it said that it had a bad wheel bearing on the right rear wheel. We got it started and took off with it with a noticeable rumble from the right rear. We stopped after few miles to check things out (we just HAD to take the hubcaps off, after all, that's just what was done back then). When we got to the right rear, the lug nuts were VERY loose and the holes in the wheel were completely worn out. Fortunately, the spare was up, so we mounted it using three lug nuts from the other four wheels. Got us home with no problems. Dave
