What kind of pocket knife do you carry?

Post by Dan B » Sun Aug 16, 2020 8:23 pm

For some reason, I recently became interested in carrying a pocket knife. It’s not something I grew up with. But I can see how it would be one of those things you couldn’t live without once you got in the habit.

This forum cuts across all kinds of people so I figure there’s a lot of you who carry a pocket knife. What’s your favorite and what do you find yourself using it for?

I picked up a Case Peanut. I’m from PA so I like that they’re made here and it feels like loose change in my pocket. I might also have to get a Sodbuster Jr too for working outdoors.

Never have carried one. I may have had them when I was a kid but really don't remember having them on me. I usually have something close by to cut with or in the tool box.
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

I grew up a Boy Scout in the home of an engineer, have carried a pocket knife my whole life (74 years). My preference is for the Buck knife sold at Lowes for $10.00, light weight, hardy, one blade, cheap enough to not cry if it gets lost, stolen, or broken, use it practically every day for a huge number of tasks. In truth I feel naked without it. One day a man had spent the night with Mae West. In the morning he asked if he could do anything for her as a thank you. She said would he please leave his pocket knife in the top dresser drawer. He opened the drawer to find it full of pocket knives. Putting his knife in the drawer, he asked if she had a pocket knife fetish. No, she said, right now I am young, beautiful, sexy, and I have no trouble finding a man for the evening. But I know that one day I will be old, not so beautiful, and not so sexy, and the way I figure it, there is nothing a sixteen year old boy won't do for a pocket knife. Sorry, I never did meet Miss West.

So, walking this out a bit, if a 16-year-old got one of Mae's knives, would the Boy Scouts of
America call that, Getting the Mae West Badge ? :D

Growing up on a farm, you might as well leave the house naked as without a knife.
This is one of two I carry. Issued to me by the USMC, they were called "Last Ditch" and
carried in our boot. On my second deployment, one of our guys got the chance to use
his, coming up the better against five abductors. This one is about a 1/2" shorter than
delivered, as I keep it sharp enough to shave with. I use it for EVERYTHING, from eating
to toad sticking to opening mail to out on the job. The cord twists around the wrist to
ensure it won't be taken from my hand.

I started carrying a pocket knife when I was six growing up in rural Virginia. I've carried many types and brands over the years but in the 80s while in the service I got hooked on a Gerber LST. These are thin, light weight and hold a good edge. I'm on my 3rd one now. First one I broke prying with it, the second I wore the blade down to 1 inch and decided to get a new one. This one is 12 years old and holding up well. I feel naked with out it, one of the many reasons I have for never ever getting on a plane again.

Just a humble Swiss Army Knife (genuine Wenger version)

My main blade is also about 1/4" shorter from sharpening :-)

Why the SAK? Well, it has lots of gadgets and bits on it! (And I have used all of them for something or another, probably in no case was it the thing they were intended for too :-) )

Swiss Army Knife - besides the obvious uses, the little magnifying glass helps my old eyes read the numbers on drill bits :-)

I've carried a pocket knife since I was old enough to wear pants with pockets, I'll be 71 in Nov. The one I have now, I bought at a street vendor in Saigon South Vietnam in 1970. It's basically a knockoff of a mechanic's knife issued by the Army. I can't quite make out the name, but it looks like "MKLIEN&SONS, CHICAGO, made in usa." I've carried it almost daily for the last 50 years. The blade is about 3/8 " shorter and 3/16" narrower than it used to be and the bale on the end wore off many years ago. I've lost it a couple of times over the years, but it has always come home. I am lost without it. :D Dave

In my 50's I started carrying one that said NRA but that fell off. Blade is as dull as as the day is long. Still cuts tho!
As handy as the flashlight in my pocket! Used it just a few hours ago digging in a rust pit. :)
Couldn't be without it anymore.
Ouch. The point is still sharp so I'm easier on equipment than you guys. ;)
A couple of dad's small knives are right there in front of me and have one up in the house made by great uncle Gustav Hanson in Californey.
I won't carry those anymore but I have.

Old Timer my son got me about 15 years ago. The single blade knife with walnut on the handle that I carried forever gave up. The brass rivets that held the wood on wore the heads off so the wood would not stay on. I carried a pocket knife as long as I can remember. Its part of getting dressed like my leather belt.

First pocket knife was a Barlow. For many years during and after college I carried a Swiss Champ, the largest Swiss army knife at the time I bought it,had the magnifying glass, saw, you name it.I was cutting up brush and throwing it in a burn barrel 1 night and it got caught in some cedar limbs and went in the fire. I had to grab a glove and got it out, handles dripping off. Lost the lens to the magnifier. I still have it but don't know if they are even still in bussiness or if they could fix it. For the past 25 years I have carried a Leatherman Super tool.I loosened the pivot bolts a touch so i can take it out of my pocket and open it with a twitch of the wrist with 1 hand. I got tired of putting down what I was working on just to open a dang pair of pliers!
If you can't help em, don't hinder em'

From the time I started trade school in 1970 until I retired as an industrial electrician in 2014 I carried a Klein 1550-6 pocket knife; it had a sheepsfoot blade for wire stripping, a regular pocket knife blade, and a straight blade with a flat screwdriver tip that locked in the open position. I wore out two of those pocket knives in 44 years.

Now I have a Buck #110 with a single, locking blade that I got as a retirement gift. The Buck carries a nice edge, but gives me the impression of being more fragile than the tradesman-tough Kleins I carried for so many years. I got out of the habit of carrying it, though, when my mother was in her last years and I was travelling across the Houlton, ME/Woodstock, NB border frequently to tend to her...the Canadian Border Services say travelers must declare, and they have the right to search for, all weapons - to me the term 'weapon' is open to too much individual interpretation, and with Mum and me living on opposite sides of the border I never wanted to give them an excuse to complicate my frequently necessary border crossings. But it lives in a bowl in the middle of the kitchen table along with my key ring, loose pocket change, etc., ready to grab as I'm headed out the door.
