How about a identification thread

Post by FATMAN » Mon Mar 15, 2021 3:49 pm

I know a lot of folks here buy a lot of t parts at sale and auctions and always there is more in the box than Model T parts, it would be nice if there was a web site where folks could list photo's- part numbers to see what it is, most things get trashed or put on a shelf, this could help out a lot of folks, what do you think? I like the idea. I'm not sure how many other good ideas like that would be too many.
Hope for good comments.

A friend of mine had an antique shop. On a wall near the door, he hung odd
"whatzits" below a sign, telling observers that if anyone could identify any of
the objects there, they could get a 25% discount. He always seemed to have
a dozen or so weird items that he could not identify, and often visitors knew
exactly what they were for. Anyone know what this is ?

There is already a site like what y our suggesting https://www.reddit.com/r/whatisthisthing/ but as you can see it isn't what you would want.
What you really looking for is Image Recognition Software - https://www.netguru.com/blog/image-recognition-apps
However stuff like this only works if it has an image like the one your searching for. Also the answer is what was previously recorded right or wrong.
Download the app and take a picture with your phone - https://lens.google.com/#!#download

I am an IT data person and we did look at how to do this in the 1990's - not from a technology point of view but from a data perspective. For example: if you had a picture of a wood spoke wheel and tried to identify information about it - a system could return all similar looking wood spoke wheels with the same number of spokes etc. If the tire was still on then you wouldn't get the wheels with tires off - but that could be an option - exact or similar - but similar likely would return hula hoops too. I think you see what I'm getting at. Even using the knowledge of MTFCA members is not always fetch an answer 100% and they been collecting images for many many years.

I should add, the technology is available now, but not all the data. Every image posted on the internet has the potential of being captured and identified by the information surrounding it. Just like when you do a textual search using Google you get images that match that "textual" even ones that aren't what you had in mind. Image searches would work in a similar way, using graphical references, color etc. instead of text and matching to images that it already defined in a similar way.
The past is a great place and I don't want to erase it or to regret it, but I don't want to be its prisoner either.

Burger's photo at first reminded me of part of a cattle dehorner, but I don't think that is what it is now.
I can't tell by the photo but it could be used to crimp or bend something. Or it could be one of Kalamity Dick's lesser known inventions. As a matter of fact all of the whatzits could be attributed to him and this thread would be an easy way to identify things.

I believe the item Burger is showing is used to crimp and tighten fencing. Used on electric and barbed wire.

--- " How about a identification thread ?" ---

With all that is in the news lately, this struck me a little different
this morning ....

So, is this where one posts when their 12-year-old former daughter
announces that what was formerly a "she", now identifies as a cis-gender,
non-binary sheep worm ? 🤔
