That is what I though initially, but I must say now I am a fan of this new format. It is so much easier to upload photos now. We do not have to mess with resizing them. That alone makes it much easier to use. Thank You forum!

Change is inevitable, and my opinion is this new forum is far better! It took some getting used to but has so much more to offer. Our administrators have done a great job!

I like it. Like anything, once you get used to how to navigate it , it's a breeze and easier to post pics.
Yes it was perplexing for a few days and admin. had to do some tweaking, but things are settling down now.
And as admin. said the old forum software couldn't be upgraded any more. It was 4/5 years obsolete.

Not only no way in h*ll but it isn't possible anyway. Personally my biggest problem was shrinking my avitar to fit but this is such an inprovement over the old Forum it's almost rediculous. PS: I still prefer the Barn site over both.

I am always resistant to change. But I do like the new forum. I do like posting photos without having to resize them.
I would encourage you to find a young person who can help you learn how to navigate. Even I can do it now!

As I understand it, they can't even if they wanted too. The old system was so outdated that there was no support for it. They kept it staggering along as far as they could but it is gone! A massive amount of work has gone into this new system, and while there were a few opening day glitches, they have been resolved and in almost every case, it is working great! Sure, you have to get used to it, but it is easy to learn, there is plenty of tech help available, just ask!

Well I just logged back in for the first time in weeks.I come by and read over some stuff as a guest.
It would seem that the software needs to be written in a way it can be supported indefinatly for aforum like this.I can see facebook or something not caring about long term as everything there is living for the moment type stuff.
But this is a site that folks may visit for many years to come as long as they have a intrest in T's.

I will admit that if I could have my way with all things, I would prefer the old format forum form. However, as a former communications technology expert (thirty years and my fingerprints are all over the foundation of the internet), I have known for years that it could not be continued for much longer. I often commented of my concerns about switching to a new format, and am very pleased with the way this NEEDED change was handled.

Thank you Chris and Jeff!

The new forum is good but there is still one thing I would like to see done and that is to change color or have an icon pop up when I come out of a post. I know if I refresh it will change color but that is a pain in the ol posterior. If they can put that silly preview thing on here why can't they do what a lot of us have asked for. Jim PS the Grand poobah and company are doing a great job and are to be commended.

To Steve Jelf ....or anyone who knows how to do this-

Please explain how you imbedded an image in the message in between texts instead
of as attachment(s).

I have tried to do this using BB code. The damn thing tells me it cannot determine
the sizes of the images so rejects the posts. Nearly all of my images are uploaded to
my web host server and are the same 640 x 480 size. Huh?

I have successfully done this on Royce's site, so it's not a problem of not knowing
how to use BB code. Or, maybe it is. I am no computer whiz; not in the least.

I never had this problem with the old forum since we could post the image wherever
we wanted and then upload them to those spots.

So, until this becomes clear to me, I will probably just be a lurker. The old forum
was infinitely more user-friendly in this respect. At least, for now, for me.

When you add an image, you will see a box next to File Comment that reads place inline. Click on that box after the picture loads and will place the image in the text.
DSCF6629.JPG
So now if I want to add another image in the text I load the next image; Then I can talk about my brothers John Deer cat.
DSCF6452.JPG
I would suggest doing the preview before posting to make sure the images are in the correct order.

Thank you. I'll try the next time an opportunity presents itself.

You are loading the images using a "drag and drop" method instead of as attachments?

Jim, if you are clicking your "back button" it will not change color, but if you click on "return to 2019 discussion forum" at the end of the post the color of the icon changes.

I'll chime in on this one. I liked the look and use of the old forum. Easier to read the type, loaded much faster on my computer, just had a friendlier feel. I know change is inevitable, dang it. But I still like driving around listening to my 8 tracks in my truck and running cords to my hand tools in the shop. One day I guess I'll have to up grade those things too.

Only thing I miss from the old forum was when you clicked on a link, by default, it opened in a new window. Also, I'm sure the new software is capable of handling the creation of hyperlinks but the use of standard html code seems to be turned off. The url button should create one just by adding the link and the text you want but the way it is now you don't need to use it at all.

Example:

<a href="http://www.ebay.com/" target="_blank">Visit eBay!</a>

With url button: www.ebay.com

Without url button: www.ebay.com

One of the things I liked about the old forum was the ability to run a progression of photos, in sequence, as the narrative of an explanation progressed. It was a great tool for explaining your own problem or an answer to someone else's. I miss that.

Yes, the limit of five photos per post is sometimes inconvenient.

On the old forum picture files that were too big would give you trouble, and you had to shrink them before they could be posted. On this forum the opposite is true. If you post a photo file that's too small, this happens:

IMG_5320_4_2.JPG
IMG_5320_4_2.JPG (31.04 KiB) Viewed 19375 times
This little 300 pixel (188KB) picture shows up as an attachment with data under it. If you click on it nothing happens.

But when I post it full size (2360 x 2028 pixels, 2.1 MB) It shows up larger here without the data, and when you click on it you get a full size image that fills the screen.

IMG_5320_4.JPG
With this ability to post full size high resolution images, it's disappointing when people put tiny pictures of their cars in the gallery.

I was on the old forum at least nineteen years and never did learn how to post a picture.
Just reading above posts that mention the new forum is easier to post pictures on makes me like the new forum better.
Getting used to the new forum reminds me of people who ran out and bought a new model T and stored it for later because they thought they could never learn to drive a newer car with a three speed stick.
We once had neighbor lady who was willing to drive my wife around, she had a license and my wife didn’t, but she couldn’t drive an automatic! Was afraid to learn!

I think the problem with the old one was that they could no longer update it with new antivirus or capacity programs...they had to go to this new one because it comes with all the bells and whistles that make this forum a hell of a lot more secure, than our old one was...besides, Chris B wanted to put my drawings on that one too, but had troubles with the formatting...on this one however the program is a lot more accommodating than our previous forum in the way it handles pictures, so instead of having 3 different files (Large, for download, small for thumbnail and one large PDF) this program allows for only one and does all the different sizing according to what is placed where and yet allows for the full size for download.

I still have some problems with searches though, but then I had them on the old forum too...it is a learning curve, you have to accept that there is no going back to the old way, because it is just not a viable solution any longer. Embrace this one, get used to navigating within it and I think you'll enjoy posting and working within this forum waaaay more than the previous one...besides guys...you know...fun never quits! Right? ;)

It is very similar to the experience our forefathers had when they made the switch from Model T to Model A. The T was much easier to shift the gears on a T, but had a lot more problems with the transmission and bands. It takes a while to get accustomed to the new one. All is pretty easy except loading pictures. If you had the pictures sized right you just click on one place and then find the picture and click again and it is posted. However with the new forum the picture can be a larger size but is much harder to load. I admit I have only been able to load pictures a few times and usually forget what I did to get them to post. The problem is in the instructions where it says,"drag and click". I haven't been able to find out how to drag from a completely different part of my computer to this page! I have succeeded several times, but tried so many different ways to accomplish it that I don't remember what I did to actually make it work  Anyway if I try again I will probably eventually memorize it.

Norman, What I do to drag and drop pictures to this new system on my PC is first make the T Forum page that I want to post picture to take up less than half of my screen. Next I open up a new window and go to the file location of my pictures and make this new window take up the other half of my screen with no overlap. I can now click on the picture file,(jpg), and drag a copy to the T Forum page where I am posting. The thing I forgot at first is that the pictures seem to post in backwards order, last one copied is first one posted, so it helps me to prior make copies of my pictures in my PC file with file names numbered in the order I want them to appear.

I've never tried drag & drop because normal posting is so easy. Here's how.
Screen shot 2019-03-10 at 9.24.29 PM.png
Screen shot 2019-03-10 at 9.24.29 PM.png (7.29 KiB) Viewed 18936 times

Screen shot 2019-03-10 at 9.25.11 PM.png (6.76 KiB) Viewed 18936 times
Then click Add files.

Screen shot 2019-03-10 at 9.27.33 PM.png
In the window that pops up find the picture file on your computer that you want to use. Click on it, then click Open.

Screen shot 2019-03-10 at 9.28.24 PM.png
The title of your file will appear on the left. A green check on the right will show you that it's OK to use. Click Place inline. The file title will appear as an attachment in the composition box.

8-11 033 copy 2.jpg
Click Preview and your picture will appear in the Preview box. In the composition box you type whatever you want above and below your picture.

Now, for practice, go and post a nice photo of your Model T in the Gallery.

What helps me, when posting multiple pics, is to open their storage folder, copy the ones I want and paste them to the desktop. Then I can rename by number for the proper order if need be and just delete them when the task is finished.

I understand why they had to do it, but I must admit, I liked the old one better. I never had "Problems" per se, posting photos, but it was a pain to have to resize them first. That is the only thing I like better about the new format. Other than that, there is no advantage to ME. Like I say, I do understand why we had to change and it ain't ever going back. Most of the new bells and whistles are things that are just fluff to me. I have little use for them, and some things I even find annoying, like the first and last post popping up in the main tree when I try to scan through it. I use my cursor to kinda keep my place like I would my finger in a book. Can't do that now, as those windows pop up and obscure what I'm trying to look at. The good news for some of you though is that I don't get on here as much as I used to. That should bring smiles to some of your faces.

And the OS's are free to use and alter as you wish! Maybe a viable alternative? I didn't think so. :)
This forum is very smooth, as light as the old style and works well for me. I've also used these php style bulletin boards before and similars.

That would take an army of people. It’s kind of like transferring vinyl records to cassettes. It’s a complete manual process. You do it because it is a new format and offers lots of benefits. So, you like the new cassettes for lots of reasons, however, the vinyl sounds better but is limited in use. But it’s always a trade off. One day this Forum software will be old, obsolete and unsupported and will also need an upgrade or change.

Do you all still have your Radioshack TRS 80’s (trash 80) or Atari Computer’s? No, you do t... now you have a Mac or a pc. Do you still have DOS and floppy discs? Hardly. Change takes a little time to get used to, but ultimately results in something the vast majority wants and can use that folks like me who volunteer to help keep things running can actually help and do it with a supportable toolset. Something we can get other folks to help us with if necessary, and that does happen.

I love the kids idea. Seriously. They can show you how to do just about anything on any computerized device. And likely do it with their thumbs no less...

And in light of this thread being OT, and over the protests of some, and the joy of most, I’m now moving it to the OT Forum.

Yours faithfully,
AdminJeff

The old forum was completely unsupportable. Think of a failed wheel bearing in your car that you keep trying to make work. You add a ton of grease. You replace the little balls, but the races are toast.
The previous forum was that failed ball bearing with no replacement balls or races available and no way to upgrade. And no amt of grease would work. So there is no going back. Ever.

This forum is organized in a logical hierarchy. Click the Index link and you can see that in full technicolor. I’m not seeing a mess around here.... and that folks, is by design.

The new forum is here to stay, as others have confirmed. I find it interesting that when the 'upgrade' was discussed at Hershey in '18, there was an overwhelming support for the 'new forum', and Chris assured us it would 'not be like facebook'. What we have seems to me to be much more like facebook than I expected, but hey, it's still a somewhat free country. I do find the format to be very inefficient of use of screen space, lot's of white space and little actual text on a screen and constant shuffle back and forth to topics and posts. And there's the signature lines of some posts that resemble half page ads from JC Whitney.

I’m missing something here... there are no political news feeds, no “liking” of posts, no friends lists or friends feeds and especially, no ads. For all those reasons I committed Facebook Haricari 6mos ago and deleted my account. More folks should try doing that. This forum will never have those FB features as long as I’m involved... and working for free as an admin in our mostly free country...

I keep Facebook to keep up with some of the friends and relatives. But for Model T information I come here. In addition to the differences Jeff mentioned, this is a primary source of sound advice. The FB groups tend to have a lot more "Gee, that's neat, I wish I lived closer."

The old forum was a mess because spammers were taking it over It had to be replaced with a forum that could be protected and did not take so much administrative time.

Face Book, in my opinion, is a totally disorganized mess because I can't figure out to find a post from yesterday and every time I hit the "enter" key it posts my message even though I only want to start a new paragraph. Plus all those messages and friends crap popping up. If I sat down with one of my children for an hour I could probably figure it out, but I also dislike the recent political disclosures about its information sharing on members.

I can Google "MTFCA" along with about any question on Model T's and get a knowledgeable answer quickly. As someone new to Model T's I find this forum's greatest strength to be guys who know their stuff who are willing to share that info in a friendly manner. This is a great service to the Model T community, and I would like to see it continue.

I do hate FB, but I find this forum very easy to navigate and I like to be able to go directly to vehicles for sale and find them all in one place rather than having to search though a lot of posts. Ditto for parts. Some posters do not like the OT. but it is only a click away and I feel it makes the main forum less cluttered.

Sorry to bring my opinion into the mix again.
If you find this new forum difficult, consider this please: I was surfing along, looking for MM (Minneapolis-Moline) info out there.
Actually, I'm a Twin City tractor guy and that predates MM tractors, so I hit 2 different forums that I'm a member of already,
looking for info :)
One had been down due to spammers for a couple of months!
Both of them are far clunkier than the old, light forum we had and yet light years clunkier than this light phpbb forum.
Model T information is cake!
Try searching for info on anything that is starting to become obscure. Like Twin City tractors.
My brain said to type this: Man, we got it made, right here...

I like the this platform better, the searches seem snappier. i just wish they would migrate the past data/post over from old platform to this platform. It would allow us to query/search without having to go back and forth between websites.

Yours faithfully,
AdminJeff

Thanks for the info

I'm about as computer illiterate as anyone can be, but I'm slowly getting through the learning curve. So far, the only thing that I have an issue with is when you are done with a thread and go back, it starts from the top of the forum. No big deal, just a bit of a pita. Overall, I like the new format, the Admins have been doing a great job, I can't fathom the amount of time and effort they have put into this. Dave

The new forum is great! It was well thought out by folks who knew what this forum was for and who used it. They also allowed for comments and agreed with some suggestions to improve the capabilities. This is unlike EBAY where someone decides what they think is an improvement without any knowledge of the user environment. BAH HUMBUG to EBAY!!!
