Helping a friend
I have a good friend that asked me to help him get a vehicle home. He is 79 years old in body but a kid at heart. He has helped my many times at a moments notice including helping with my new shop. I said yes before I knew what or where. When he said we were taking the dozer to get to it and get it out of the woods I was all in. Then he tells me its a 1936 Ford schoolbus. It was driven to its resting place with a rebuilt flathead V8. It has a wood body with metal skin that was converted to a food truck. The owner was a little suprised at the shape it was in when we found it. A soft top over wood slats and parked in the woods for 30 years did not fare well. Infact, the grapevine took most of the body off for us. It had been hacked and whacked many years before.
As found. They tried to find it last year, but with leaves on trees had no luck.-

Re: Helping a friend
After turning my buddy Gary loose with the dozer , the old Ford began to show itself.
I knew the body would never survive a trip to the road much less going down the road. The vines in the last tree proved too much for the punky, mushy wood that was under the tin.

Re: Helping a friend
In the end, this is what we had left. A complete drivetrain, some very straight solid sheetmetal and alot of fun with my buddy. Oh and a great story that our wives will never understand why we do it.
I thought some of you may enjoy seeing our day and bring back a memory or two that you would share with us.-

I dont know much about the modern Iron but I think we have a 32 Ford and not a 36 like we were told by the owner. Hase a later flathead also.

"you may enjoy seeing our day and bring back a memory or two that you would share with us."
Your day was awesome!
A similar memory helping a friend and another friend brought back to me from just a few years past:
A nice/easy going fellow that I'd known forever had a nasty brain mess-up in his 70's and the drugs given him finished him off.
A near-drooling mess. His wife had to tell him who I was. Before that he knew me well.
They were selling his old Drott tracked excavator/backhoe to a fellow that brought a low-boy to a quiet gravel road in the country.
Parked uphill to further the difficulty. Truly.
I played traffic duty at the top of the hill.
Having trouble getting the backhoe UP their hill, out of the driveway and on the low-boy,
Tony got in the cab somehow. Mouth hanging open. He was gone... Nobody there. Gone. Out to lunch.
BUT he KNEW that machine and walked that Drott up and on the trailer and made suggestions to use the boom with chains to help pull the old Drott into place on the trailer. The track drive was weak. The new owner replaced him for a few minutes on the way and merely made the Drott's GM screamer engine and machine mad. Nothing done. Tony got back in and made it happen. Gently.
He was completely gone but knew his machine. Such a cool memory.
You dared me to. I did. Felt good to type it out Dallas. That WAS tough. Thank you.
You guys had a great day! And rescued something special! Hopefully that smooth running V-8 can make some noise again!

Re: Helping a friend
Nice! I always like to help friends,You just never know what's coming next. I have a young man that lives near me he is tool poor but has a strong back so I loan him the tools he needs and he helps me with the heavy lifting. One day he comes over and says he found a boat and needed help getting it out..... turned out to be a late 30's Chris Craft I think cant find the pictures though. anyway it looks like you had fun!
Do it right or do it over, your choice. Drive like everyone is out to get you!

Re: Helping a friend
We had a great time. Turns out it will be donated to the Early Ford V8 Museum. Gary said he would probably never have time to do anything with it. It or parts will be used that way. For he and I, the fun had finding and digging it out was the priceless.
