FJ - Changing a bad day with a good attitude
Yesterday started out not so good ....
I stuck around Austin, TX after dropping off last Thursday for a guy who
wanted me to haul an old Packard out of Houston up to Albany, NY.
He repeatedly told me it was “ a done deal “ - he was flying in to
pay cash for the car.
I didn’t hear from him - I was about 30 miles away from the car.
So I called the Seller - turns out the car was even better than my guy had expected
but he wanted to make a good deal even better - he lowballed the Seller.
My guy left without buying the Packard.
I decided that drive over anyway because the Seller sounded like
he had an interesting shop - and I like to share a good story.
Turns out ......
It was a rather rare car .....
With some research - it appears to be a 1924 Packard Sport.
1924 was the first year for the flathead Packard 8.
This Packard happens to have one.
Last year I delivered (2) Packards to the National Packard Museum ( a great small museum ) in Ohio.
I became a member & took a guided tour.
I need to do some more research on this car
but so far I can’t find any auction records for
any 1924 Packard Sport cars with an 8 cylinder
engine sold at auction in the last (5) years.
I try to maintain a positive attitude - an “ attitude of gratitude “ as my friend in Keene, NH likes to say.
I met new friends yesterday - saw some great cars ....
Including one owned by James Cagney
( yeah - the famous actor ) that he left in the woods
after crashing it on a hunting trip.
Today I get to see a couple Locomobiles from the
same collection the Packard came from in West Texas.
They haven’t seen the light of day for 30 plus years ....

Jim,
Thanks for sharing that. A great looking car. Wish I afford one like that. The town I grew up in a guy collected Packards. I've like them since then.

Re: FJ - Changing a bad day with a good attitude
I can't really imagine a serious collector not going through for a car like that. Not if it is the cars he likes. If he MUST have the best of the best of the best? Okay, not fresh enough. Would require a full re-restoration. Some "collectors" are more interested in getting cars for half what they should go for. Its more about the power, or the profit, than the car. I never could understand those types. All pre-'40 Packards are wonderful. That one is indredible!

Re: FJ - Changing a bad day with a good attitude
Wayne, you point up the abyss between those who do this for the car/s, and those who
do it for the money, or "poser" position within a given community. A lot of guys are into cars
only as a tool for the attention it brings to them as a person. Playing the "big shot" is the
primary motivation for ownership. Others, just do it because they love the car, and often
practice the "black hole" method of business, spending way more money on a car than they
could ever expect to get out of it. To them, it isn't about the money. It's about the car.

Burger, there's a guy in Davenport with a Packard sport phaeton like this one. He keeps it in the lounge room, with the exhaust plumbed to the outside so he can run it whenever he feels like it. Somewhere I have a photo of my 10 year old son at the wheel. For a long time a VERY early John Deere tractor sat along side it.

There's plenty to like about that car. But did anybody else notice the gorgeous purple glass in the headlights ? And both sides match !

In the trailer now
Jesse and his brother Boo Boo have become friends.
They are the brothers that are helping sell the Packard and other cars from the collection.
Turns out the Packard is a documented two owner vehicle that has been in the current family for over (60) years.
It is a great car from a great collection.
Jesse had sold another great car from the collection - a 1960 VW Double Cab with 7000 original
miles used on the ranch.
Original interior with a gun rack & spot light added along with heavy duty front & rear custom bumpers ...
Solid floor pan throughout - nicest original single or double cab VW that I have hauled.
Turns out it needed to go to Baltimore, MD so I picked it up today ...

Davenport, Washington ?
Personally, I'd prefer a "boring" old sedan to a phaeton, but in a pinch, right ?
Packard had several headlight options in these years. These drum style often have
the amethyst lenses. I would not run my truck with anything else. I had these lenses
for 40 years before I ever owned a T. Most people work it the other way around. I bought
the truck to have a place to show off the purple glass.
Jim, drop on by any time. Always a pleasure.

Thanks John,
The 1924 Packard Super 8 Single proved to be an important vehicle - it was the predecessor to
Packard’s Speedster Series which began in 1929.
There are less than (5) original complete known
models - out of those I am not sure how many
have all (4) numbers indicating a complete car
as it rolled off the assemby line:
Body Number
Engine Number
Frame Number
Packard Manufactuer Plate
This Packard has all four - it is Number 218 of the first production year
which started in 1923 - Packard records are scarce ( most remaining records
are in a private collection - out of the previous cars it is not known
how many left the factory as “ Super 8 “.
We are focusing on the custom paint job.
This Packard went to a Portland, Oregon Distributor.
This Distributor wss known to paint custom colors among
other things - then the car went to the Packard Agency
that sold the car.
The only Packard factory color available for this model
was “ Dustproof Gray “ with Maroon Pinstripe:
But this Packard has a single coat of black paint
with bare rusty metal on the top of the door sills
and the frame.
The black paint on the door edges along with
door hardware appear to be original.
With (2) documented owners - the custom exterior
paint with black pinstriping just might be original.

It's no wonder chopped tops became popular on hot rods and customs. That Packard and many other expensive cars from that era are just plain COOL!! Dave
1925 mostly original coupe.
