1911 Regal Underslung engine startup
I started my 1911 Regal engine today. This is probably the first time it has run in 60 years. I fitted an NH carburettor to simplify things.
This is a 3 litre 4 cylinder engine with a two bearing crank. It has a Siamese exhaust port on 2 and 3.

Priceless. I remember a "first start" conversation by two veteran restorers. It was in the Best thing in life or like walking on the moon category. This is certainly that.
Thanks for letting us be there too.

Thank you for posting. Fired right up and sounded great. What was the advertised horse power? Do you have the car for it? Body style? Again. Thanks for posting.

Re: 1911 Regal Underslung engine startup
It was rated at 20 horsepower.
The car is mostly complete although it needs a body. I plan to build a Colonial Coupe body.

I am very much enjoying the frame photos. I was mesmerized by this one from Nevada many years ago. Seeing what is underneath is really a treat. I would love to see any pictures of the body project you might be willing to share. A Colonial Coupe is most elegant and rare.

Re: 1911 Regal Underslung engine startup
Rich, yes, as far as I can tell there are three Regal Colonial Coupes in existence, one in the Louwman Museum in The Hague and two in the USA. There is an Overland Coupe in Victoria with a very similar body. I have also seen drawings of an Oakland with a Colonial Coupe body. I imagine the bodies were all produced by the same coachbuilding firm. I have been told that the "Colonial" part of the name refers to the colonial window style.
In the late 1940s Hudson Miniatures in Scranton, Pa restored a Regal Colonial Coupe and produced a 1:16 scale balsa model kit based on the restoration. The kit came with very detailed plans which I am basing the body on. They also produced a plastic kit in 1:32 scale in 1952. I had one of these 3d scanned but I'll probably work off the 1:16 scale plans as they have more detail. Hudson Miniatures was started by Tony Koveleski & his wife Doris Hudson. I think they were well know in the veteran car movement back then. They also had a very nice Stutz Bearcat. Their son Oscar Koveleski owned Auto World and used to race a variety of cars. He was also a participent in the Cannonball Run.
The Hudson Miniatures kits were advertised in the back of Popular Mechanics magazine back in the day (Stutz ad below). They also produced a Model T torpedo kit which I am sure some forum members have built.

WOW!. Then I presume this is one that inspired you. Maybe it was in the Briggs-Cuningham that I took these. I was surely insipred but then I've never had a Regal chassis.

Re: 1911 Regal Underslung engine startup
Here is another Coupe I found in my 1912 Cartercar "Announcement". Pretty radical styling.

This is the only model pictured in the "ALAM Hand Book Of Gasoline Automobiles" for 1911.
The old forums are a gold mine of information.

Re: 1911 Regal Underslung engine startup
Do you suppose the Colonial Coupe was a special body finished by "others" and not the factory?

It looks like there is a Cartercar in San Diego.

It’s interesting that the door location is different each side.

This car has a similar body. The photo was labelled 1912 Cole.
