HACKERS... again
We got hacked last night... AGAIN. This time they took control of everything, website, forum, the works.
Thankfully, my backup system is on the mark and works like a charm now.
I caught it at 4AM today and got everything back. Last thing I want to have is a bunch users sitting down to their fresh-brewed coffee and not able to get in to their favorite Forum site.
I think I got all the posts restored up through last night. If something is missing, what you see is the best I could do.
Ok, back to sleep. Yawn.
Jeff

I resemble that remark!I caught it at 4AM today and got everything back. Last thing I want to have is a bunch of cranky, crusty, old retired dudes sitting down to their fresh-brewed coffee and not able to get in to their favorite porn... errr Forum site.
Thank you again for your efforts
The old forums are a gold mine of information.

Re: HACKERS... again
I don't understand the hackers motives. What do they have to gain by hacking this site?
Technology, the solution to all of our problems... and the cause of most of them.

Re: HACKERS... again
Its a thing. Remember the game Capture the Flag? Bragging rights to their friends.
At one point in my youth while I was a young lad studying electrical engineering at Chico State (know, an oxymoron - study and Chico State) , a sadistic instructor gave my history class a brutal assignment during "Pioneer Days" that required many DAYs of research in the library - do it or he's fail us all. This was the same year Playboy Mag voted Chico the #1 Party School. In the entire USA... So, that meant we couldn't ditch class and enjoy the week of mayhem. That afternoon I hacked Chico State's entire library system and shut it down. Like unusable shut down. And I kept it down for days. All For fun. I know - I had issues. But let me tell you I drank for free for months after that... people I didn't even know bought me drinks - thats when I acquired a taste for the finest spirits money could buy.
Things of lore, for sure.
Now do you know why hackers do what they do? They disrupt YOUR day, and cause Admins a bunch of grief. And laugh all day long. So, I have to think like they do and try and stay one step ahead of them. And I have to have a plan when they outsmart me, which, these days, is getting a little easier the older I get.
Aren't you glad I'm on your side now?
AdminJeff
And Dave, I'm all over this shi$% now.

do they have access to our pass words? If so, some of us no doubt use the same log in passwords for other things. maybe we should change them.

No - it was hacked at the file level. Passwords are stored encrypted in the database.Linus Tremaine wrote: ↑Thu Mar 21, 2019 11:21 amdo they have access to our pass words? If so, some of us no doubt use the same log in passwords for other things. maybe we should change them.

A password that contains Upper Case, Lower Case, a symbol or punctuation, and a number(s) comprising EIGHT or more placeholders would take a hacker over 700 years to guess

My password is 14 "items" long. Capitol, numbers, letters & 1 symbol. Good luck. As to this hacking business I've stated before I made no changes nor did I go on any new sites but just after I registered for the new Forum my junk E-mail went nuts. I'm talking 2 or 3 a week to over 25 a day. Can't figure it out as it makes no sense.
Forget everything you thought you knew.

Re: HACKERS... again
I discovered it was down at about 1:30 in the am. Sorry, I was unable to log out. I thought maybe you were doing more upgrades? It did make me wonder if people not logged out cause any issues? I also wonder if I keep being reported as being here if I fail to log out?
Anyway, Thanks for all you do for for us crazies!
A little side story to go along with your miscreant behavior. A long time ago, when I was in high school, the high school I went to was also the local "blind center" with special resources for the blind whether they were students there or not. As a result of this, I had several high school friends that were blind. At that time, the telephone companies were implementing automated direct dialing systems for long distance calls using a standardized audible tone system. There was also a story that made the national news when the FBI found and arrested a blind high school student that had discovered he could whistle into the phone and get long distance calls to almost anywhere by using the proper tones. At first he just made calls for fun, then for friends, then a friend figured a way to use a tape player. Soon thereafter, came the knock on the door. I met the kid, shortly after his arrest when the school systems temporarily transferred him to my high school.

Re: HACKERS... again
How many forum members are getting porno emails I started getting them a couple of weeks ago. One of them was captioned complements of The model T Ford club of America. I reported it to Jeff. He said it had not affected the forum. I’m still getting them. I would really like to get a hold of one of the slime bags.

Re: HACKERS... again
Please remember to check that the prefix for the site is https:// and not http://. The one with the s is secure while the other is not. The old site was not secure (did not have the s) and your password could get stolen. Mine did and the scammer tried to extort me, saying that they knew everything on my computer, and as proof presented to me my password. It was not true of course, but he (or she) had me worried for a while.

Two people I know very well went down in the steam tunnels of the university early one morning and turned off the water supply to a large girls dormitory. No showers and no cafeteria for hours. Would that be considered a hack of the water supply?

Re: HACKERS... again
My friends and I were annoyed by a neighbor's dog that barked a lot, so we stayed up
all night and made noises to keep the dog barking non-stop. The owner would come out
and yell at the dog, go back to bed, and we'd make the noises again, the dog would bark,
and the owner would come back out. We made a lot of people pretty angry with that
dog and his owner. Not sure what the owner did with that dog, but it never was much of
a barker after that night. Dog training classes ?
