Oil Filters

Post by NHUSA » Thu Mar 21, 2019 11:23 am

Not T related but wondering what people know.
Back story - When I drove Audis I always used Mann filters because they were strong, did a good job of filtering the oil and hadn’t the correct pressure drain back valve in them.
I now have a Chebby 4X4 with a 5.3 motor with active fuel management that is “sensitive” to oil changes and filtering.

I am wondering what filters you recommend.
NH - Where I used to live - not the carburetor !

A guy on YouTube did a beautiful comparison of them. Wix and NAPA are number one hands down and That’s all I use.

I use the Federated house filters made by Hastings. Hundreds of oil changes and never any issues. $2-$3...
I think changing the oil in a timely manner is way more important than what filter you choose.

Mobil 1 Synthetic ...

I take two filters & compare weight.

I figure the heavier filter has more filtering media.

Have not found a heavier comparable filter.

My TT must have an internal filter, as I looked all over the engine and can't find one on the outside.

Burger:
Fred: What year GM If I may? Daughter's '08 5.3 computer is still bellyaching P0521 about pressure sensor AFTER a sender change.
My '05 Chevrolet 5.3 four door needs a sender too. Damn, I love the daughter's old pickup! Loaded to the gunnel's but has a couple issues.
Bought it twice: Once during a gifting and then again so she could get that bloody sensitive '08.
I'm thinking ANOTHER oil change for her '08 when HOT to perhaps lose the crud in the sensitive pump check or the screen under the sender IF it exists.
I always think about it this way. The Chevrolet brothers were some of the first folks to make the Fords go faster. :)
JJ, I think you have it. :)
NAPA GOLD for me too. :?:
Since I lost my mind mind, I feel more liberated

Oh boy ! .... now we're coming back around to why I don't/won't own a computer
era vehicle. Just not interested in all the BS that comes with new cars. My TT does not have
a dash screen and back up cameras either. It's a wonder these could ever be driven ! How did
they do it ?

Getting back to the original question, I use "good" filters from a number of sources, including
the Napas and Wix units. I think the key is more about changing the oil regularly and regularly
checking systems, be that on my "modern" vehicles or the old ones.
More people are doing it today than ever before !

Actually, if you can keep the oil clean and cool enough it'll last 30,000 miles or more. Synthetic up to 90,000 km or something like that?
So changing your filter every 500 and only replacing the oil lost would do wonders, if the filters were fine enough.
