Ekalaka, Montana 1914
Getting in line for gasoline. There's script on the lead car's radiator but I can't make it out. Next in line, two Fords, of course !
Story goes that buffalo hunter Claude Carter was hauling logs for a building when he got stuck in the mud. Declaring that "Anyplace in Montana is a good place for a saloon !" he built his "Old Stand" saloon right where he was stuck. The town of Ekalaka grew up around his watering hole. The saloon is visible near the center of this photo.

Interesting photo of pumping gas. The attached images show details of a 1910 EMF which match the car in question. The radiator script is likely the Dealer or the town where the car is from. a 1914 SD plate would have a dash (-) between the numerals and the SD. 1915 did not so the year is a bit off. Later plates had the year printed also.

The gas pump may be a Gilbert & Barker Type 88 like this one:viewtopic.php?t=11240

"the Old Stand Saloon" is shown just left of center in Rich B's photo and at right here. Also pictured is the Ekalaka State Bank.

I think it would be swell to have any of the cars shown in top and bottom photos, just as they are shown, not restored.
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

Mark, wouldn't that be great ? In a sense, it's what we're after when we set out to restore an old car - then the motivation to "improve" leads to complicated alterations and with the investment of much labor and $$ they become too precious to use . . . It's all fun, though !
Rich, great detective work ! Ekalaka is in the far southeast corner of Montana, you can throw a rock into South Dakota. Sure is valuable to have the license plate reference to date photos accurately. I wonder when Hostetter & Rickard took over from Mr. Carter ? I wonder if The Old Stand still stands ??

Re: Ekalaka, Montana 1914
There is an "Old Stand" Bar and Grill in Ekalaka. It doesn't look the same and I don't know if it is in the same location.
This is an EMF that was in Boise several years ago. It shows the details a bit clearer than the old photos.
And the 4 cyl 30 HP engine.

Re: Ekalaka, Montana 1914
That's great to know The Old Stand persists in Ekalaka, even if in a different location. Also fun to get a good look at an EMF ! Worth looking into that company's short history (1909-12). The initials stood for the company's principals - Everitt (a manufacturer of bodies) Metzger (who was prominent in the Cadillac company) and Flanders. Walter Flanders was Ford's production manager for a spell ! The marque was acquired by Studebaker Wagon & Carriage Co. in 1912.
EMF was understood by detractors to stand for "every morning fix 'em", but they were quite popular, and probably no more troublesome than many other early makes. Histories point to difficulties when the company was sold, but Studebaker had a well established name for high quality and soon learned hiw to build a reliable "infernal gasoline contraption" !
Thanks, Rich !!

I think the radiator script on the EMF says "Studebaker".
I've always thought EMFs were good looking cars.

Re: Ekalaka, Montana 1914
That's a good point Dan. I saw this in my search.
I was impressed by this Coupe in McCall, ID in 1985. It is a 1911. Closed cars were rather rare.
