Herb's photo may indeed be Drew and Filbert Klement testing the Reminghouse 50/50. The full moon last evening reminded me that Flibert, While not actually a Werewolf, would grow hair more quickly and sit up all night whittling during the full moon.

Going back a few posts, I too am concerned about the handling of that rifle, particularly
in a photographic situation, where youth are apt to see and accept this sort of thing as safe
and OK. Bruising of the shoulder area is just the beginning. Hearing and eye protection are
nowhere to be seen, nevermind the ever-important PT belt.

Heinrich dropped through today to farkle through the trunk of values again. He was mumbling
something about a research project he is working on and thought the trunk might hold a clue
that he is after. He was most pleased to find this one:
KDRR.jpg
It shows a pleasant afternoon down at the depot in Saddlestring, just as the daily tone train
same up from Chugwater. It was 10 June 1905, and a crowd eagerly awaited Cyrus Punkinhead
to step off the train and reveal who had won the National contest. Calhoun County sent five
serious contenders, and everyone was quite excited to cheer for the champ.

Every day for 72 years, the 5:05 trolley stop was in front of the Lunkmeister Candy,
Confectionery, and Asbestos Works, at the foot of Wombat Street. Winkie Lunkmeister
introduced the now-famous Alphabet Sampler in 1891, and both locals and people from
far away caught the trolley to have their vowel and consonant needs met. Demand was
so high that the firm survived both the Nutmeg Incident fallout and the blister epidemic
with hardly a notice. Today, orders are also filled on the internet.

Burger brought the nutmeg incident back up just now. Perhaps that should be further explained.
Here we have reference to the genuine nutmeg postmarked from Bristol Connecticut.

Was there some spurious nutmeg going around back in 1907 as that is the copyright at the bottom of the photo?

There is SO much to write, about the Nutmeg Incident, as it relates to Calhoun County
history, and national history as well. It all started there around Chugwater.

Rich is out searching for his lost gas can lid, or he'd be all over this ....

The other Rich is doing that one thing .....

The third Rich is just watching the other two.

I have a pocket door to get installed. I'll write more later.

Dang. Three times over the route, never found it. I'll be reviewing the nutmeg incident with Sebastian when he returns from Connecticut next week. Meanwhile, I believe I'll grate a little on this Thomas & Jeremiah. (Best when made with a jigger of Happy Sally !)

I won't be able to watch the other two Rich's this afternoon. The boiler has sprung a leak.

Doesn't Sherman have along history of leaving the valve open ? I do not have the
disciplinary records book within easy reach to check, but it seems to me Sherman
has quite a laundry list of infractions listed, including the valve problem.

Sherman's improbable deficiencies go way back. You may recall the problems Mr. Burrell had with him. If not for his boyish charm he would have been let go long ago.

Most likely it was, given the period. The real point to consider here is, who doesn't
like "boiler appliances in general" ? I know all three Richs would give a thumbs-up.

And should that be "Riches" with the "e", on account of being plural ? Or would the
fact that this is referring to persons, ... does that change the grammatical rules ? My
copy of Poindexter & Mott's "Grammar For The Ages" is currently on loan to Heinrich
for his upcoming publication on 19th Century erosion control methods and their effect
on boiler appliances in general.

Ah yes! Poindexter & Mott. Previously titled "Grammar For The Age's"
It was Major Mott's ( previously Mottes) idea to publish "Grammar in General" but fortunately Poindexter overruled him.
Thanks again rather that later.

Poindexter worked his way up as a private person subject to corporal punishment. A major disappointment and a general nuisance. "A boringly studious and socially inept person" according to one definition of the word.
Despite that his expertise in all things grammatical gained him recognition beyond the marge of sybanical confircations according to the Dedham Street Post.
Stay tuned for the nutmeg reports.

Poindexter was discovered to have a second life in Saddlestring, keeping a small apartment
above the nuisance factory. His movements there stood in stark contrast to the Poindexter
people knew down Chugwater way. With the brawn of a locomotive fireman and the suavé
anyone would expect of a 19th century diplomat, "Dex" was that social envy of Saddlestring's
upper crust. And it all started with the shoes.

What scorched the pages of the Tri-Burg tabloids was the revelation that "Dex's"
Saddlestring closet was "stocked like a French bordello" with soft shoes. It was
this, that stood in such contrast to Poindexter's image around Chugwater. There
in Chugwater, he was considered by all to be a hard shoe kind of guy.

For a stretch there around 1910, 90% of the newborn make babies were being named "Bill".
Much like the 1980's backlash against disco, a movement sprang up from the public's disdain
for the name.

90% is significant as it is well over half. The lady in the swinging bed is Yoshiyuki MacWarford. She named 3 of her sons Bill and 1 William. The MacWarfords were instrumental in braiding rhubarb into twine for binding vowels for transport. As it turned out they were the only group who benefited from the Nutmeg Incident being on vacation when it occurred.

Hard to believe this subject has not come up before now, but binding both consonants
and vowels can be a critical problem, if certain circumstances occur in sequence. Or is
that "appear in sequins" ?

Disirregardlessly, Heinrich brought up a tale of much humor while dilitating his vestibule
for the Chugwater Regatta and parade. It seems that many years ago, someone did not cinch
the uvoid terminals on the tote straps, and some consonants got mixed up. When the smoke
clearly the b's and v's had been jumbled and more than just a few people around town woke
up the next day with bound up bowels. I am sure you can all relate. The City Council met to
try and find a preventative solution, but Cyrus Boggs held up the proceedings for so long that
everyone just went home and matter was never tabled again.

It sounds a bit silly to many folks that the MacWarfords named three of their sons "Bill", but it was very efficient. When Mrs. MacWarford wanted the kids to come to supper, take a bath or go to bed, there was no need of repeating her orders name by name. William was deaf, so the difference mattered not. He simply followed his brothers.

What ever happened to Kalamity Dick ?!?

Heinrich says that in all his perusal of period documents, Kalamity Dick's name
never shows up as having bound up bowels. At least as it relates to the use of
rhubard fiber and vowel shipments. But thanks for asking.

Dick was bound to have had troubles. Perhaps he just kept quiet about it. The MacWarfords often were not paid for the twine but accepted IOU's
The sequin sequence is 5, 9, w, x. Then rinse and repeat.
Thanks for tuning in.

For those planning on using them, with the sequin sequence, it is critical that
annunciation/pronunciation be:

Five, nine, dub-yuh, ekks, with a 4/19 cadence, pausing on the 14th interval,
with a rolled transition from "yuh" into "ekks".

None of the transvertors will activate with improper annunciation and tonal
delivery.

There are many references in the record to KD's animal allergies, and none indicating that he ever owned pets, or any animals at all. If Kalamity Dick had owned a cat, it's most probable the creature would have drunk Happy Sally, and not champagne.

It's not that KD didn't like animals. He was fond of the animals Cuthbert "Mad Dog" Maddox owned through their long association, beginning with the fabled zebra dun mule, and on through many generations of dogs, cats, birds, horses, mules, burros and even the occasional individual from Maddox's small herds of sheep and cattle. He was especially taken with a Ramboullet ewe named Beulah. (Please, no coarse comments about sheepherders. Dick's interest was purely platonic. ) He simply loved them from afar. (About as far as he could get. )

In later years, his sensitivities escalated to the point he was allergic to Cuthbert as well. Maddox didn't take it personally - he had come to a point where he far preferred the company of his dogs and horses to socializing with humanity.

I cannot dispute your claims of allergies, but I always read that to be smokescreen, to
draw attention away from exotic hybid animals Kalamity Dick bred in secret. His objective
was animals that did not produce allergic reactions. His work was lifelong and only known
to a few close associates. Heinrich reports that no photos or documents have ever surfaced
of his project, but a number of his more successful crossbreed strains carry on in a special
program as the zoo up in Kalama. Two I found with a quick internet search:

And speaking of the Kalama Zoo .....

A recent post by Stan Lowe says the snow has begun falling on Selena.

Heinrich was by in his surrey, again looking for material in the trunk of values, hoping
to find something related to the machine KD built for the War Dept. to keep the roads and
rails open up the valley. Named the "Snomater" by the children of Mrs. Wiggleston's 3rd
grade class in an area-wide contest, it was first tested in the summer of 1922, on a rock
slide just north of Pispacattiquauttimawken. It proved such a success, it was released for
service that fall and remained so until 1969, when it was given to the zoo to keep the lanes
in front of the exhibits clear. It remains their sole snow clearing device to this day.

It was said that the construction and design of this monster was a "four case affair", referring,
of course, to requiring four cases of Happy Sally.

A jocular farewell is "See you in the funny papers". Well it really happened to Kalamity Dick. He was included in the immensely popular episode here. He was often called to repair or redesign inventions and appliances. Many times it was the simplest thing hindering operation. No wonder he was well liked by nearly everyone who met him.

The lever you refer to was too often called the "ejectulaor" by some. It's "straight up" position does look like it might interfere what was known as the "driven pulley". In actual operation it cocks out and clears the belt. Each time it is pulled product is ejected from the cabit door. Set the dial on "run" and the operation becomes automatic. "Deplace" and the function reverses itself into neoplick. It's almost as easy as backing up a Model T without craining your neck.

LOL ... I know !

But if the lehr belt is not engaged, and the auto-eject function is turned on, when the
continuous feed furnace injectors are turned on, there is going to a lava flow of overspill
that will burn the place to the ground !

Yes, that is one drawback and several places were burnt to the ground. This was depicted in the next week episode of Waxford and Mabel. Few could appreciate the humorous side of it. The injector nozzles were made smaller in version VI hoping for smaller fires.
Dick also appeared in the "Over at My House" comic strip but so far a copy has not been located. By the following year the Chugwater Times had dropped one and sustained the other. Nobody seems to remember which so it's won't be mentioned again.
Thanks so much.

This isn't in any way related to the discussion about the comic strips or the confabulator
levers and injector fires. But it does have to do with KD's Snomater. Karl Kasual happened
to be in the shop as the Snomater was coming together and made a comment, comparing
it's smoothness of lines to a pile of scrap iron. The glow of Happy Sally was heavy, but KD
was sparked with the idea to build a mobile, rail-mounted light carrier, capable of speed
records. Here we see Wild Bill Bergman just moments before he set the world record.

Interesting note on the comic strips, "Waxford & Mabel" and "Over at Our House". Both appeared in the Saddle String Herald and the Chugwater Times, but neither were syndicated. Cartoonist Bud Sagendorf seems to have plagiarized KD's appearances in Waxford & Mabel, as he introduced a "crazy inventor" character he called "O.G. Watasnozzle" in his "Thimble Theater" strip which was syndicated by King Features and widely distributed. Fearing cartoon piracy, the creators of Over at Our House had local papers print their strip in disappearing ink, which is the reason there are no extant copies in the archives. The original inks for the strip were lost in a tragic fire caused by a confabulator malfunction in 1933.

"smoothness of lines to a pile of scrap iron". I admit it is as charming as a wood handled Phillips screwdriver. Thanks for treating our eyes to that!
As for the cartoon strips, Bud Sagendorf was confronted by both Drew Lately (Artist for Waxford & Mabel) and "Scrratch" Pringleberg Writer for the strip. Bud not only stole character ideas but also pens during visits to the studio. His defense was that Kalamity Dick was not a real individual despite all the claims to the contrary. There are even some today that claim that KD was just made up rather than a fictional character.
Where will it all end?
Sam passed his finals.

While I cannot say where it will ALL end, this is where the standard gauge ends and the
world beyond is solely narrow gauge. A magic place, if there ever was one.

Brent! THAT is just TOO funny! I have seen some double gauge RR line before. But that was a long time ago. I do wonder where this might be? It could sure be a nasty "OOPS" if someone wasn't paying attention.
Perhaps our KD could design an automatic braking device to prevent such careless mishaps?

Little is known about Kalamity's involvement in the development of the beer can.
Here is seen his first prototype of the can crusher.
steam machine.JPG
It was because of this machine's existance final development of the beer can was achieved. It was known that bottles were reusable as discussed in this thread before, but what to do with all of the cans that would surely begin to accumulate?

Others followed in his footsteps. One family member shown here, his nephew Ignatz is shown with a later version.

The prototype machine seen above still survives as part of the collection at the Institute.
It performs flawlessly some 125 years later, and was one of KD's key early inventions that
set him on the true path of rectitude, righteousness, and recognition. He never had to ask
for work again.

The beauty of the prototype is that it runs on peanut shells and bean dip. Designed so,
because there was always plenty left over at the end of the night at Ernie's Saloon. In fact,
the prototype is still fired up every St. Swithens Day as part of the celebration, Ernie's 3rd
great grand-step-nephew bringing the special fuel cart up the hill from the saloon. I think
Rich has a photo of the cart, loaded with fuel on just such a trip.

That's it ! Both early and late examples were the same cart. Moxie Blathencourt
always kept the cart in tip-top shape. His sons and grandsons have carried on the
tradition.

BTW - the protective "flower pot" skirt, worn by those who toted the fuel cart, was
developed by KD, when he was unable to find a bell. The old Calhoun County adage
"What's brown and sounds like a bell ?" came to mind. The answer being "dung", KD
immediately thought of fertilizer, which brought to mind the giant flower pots in the
alley behind the vestibule factory. The rest is history.

Regarding Herb's can crusher information, Mabel forwarded this photo of KD and Elbert delivering the machinery to Wetzenburg. The Kelvanschwitzer sleeves had not been installed. Merlin insisted that be done at the facility. The rough road through Drazzle Falls Gulch well may have jostled the Pinckel strings loose. As seen here KD removed the front fenders for better visibility.
Sandwitches and Happy Sally of course were packed with care for the journey.
Thanks again Mabel for the teleprang.

Did Mabel make any mention of the angular dimethi cones being installed before
shipment, or did Merlin insist that these be installed on site, as well ?

Well Brent I think that would depend on the site.
Some of the older places might have a difficult area to set up the machinery in and require even disassembly of the frames around the cones.
Sometimes you just have to do what it takes to get the job done!

Mabel was no knowledge of the physics behind these contrivances. She does however have an uncanny sense for unearthing photos from discussions posted here. No journals mentioned Merlin's prejudice of the dimethi cones, soquin or rins. He may have kept this to himself to protect relatives or just neglected to write it down. The investigation did not turn up an answer on that subject and I am not willing to subjublenth it in any detail at this late date.
Sorry!

Heinrich says that there is mention of a certain danger in the notes about transporting
the cones outside their secured positions in the frame. Something about a malticular
frequency exposure. I see no cones present in the photo as KD and Elbert were approaching
Drazzle Falls Gulch.

Interesting side note: Drazzle Falls was originally intended to be called Drizzle Falls, for
obvious reasons. But the excessive export of vowels from the Alphabet Mine found "i"'s in
very short supply, so an "a" was used instead, on account of Vera Punchbowl finding a whole
box of unused, but as yet unspoiled "a"'s in her garden tote, that she kept on the back porch.

If I remember correctly that was about time the castigator syndicate petitioned to convert W's to vowel status to take up the slack. Jameson and Fladlock led the charge but ultimately were voted down.
Or was it just a bad dream?
Also the diagram indicates the cones were installed but transported separately. I'm not sure how.

I believe they were broken down and put in railcars then shipped to the dealers and then assembled on site.
This action was noticed by Henry Ford who put the idea to use in his industry. He made a lot of money that way.

Henry also stole another marketing idea from KD, as it was 1902 when KD said "You

In spite of the reverse vote, the castigator syndicate was successful insofar as in our part of the West, "Ws" are often denunciated as vowels, giving Jameson the last laugh. Actually, Jameson's last laugh occurred when he offered to buy a round of the whiskey branded with his surname in an Irish pub frequented by Orangemen. The barkeep refused to serve anything but Bushmill's. Sad. Yet another case where Happy Sally would have saved the day. (Fladlock, being a T-totaler abstained from the vote as well as the fateful visit to the pub. Good for him. [to learn more about his totaled T, see Sebastian's monograph on Tri-Burg Automobile Crashes, 1902-1918]).

There is a lot of controversy over the quote attributed to KD, on the color of paint used on the confabulator. Part of the confusion arises from the fact that the company painter was a Dutchman named Perry Winkle (distant relative of Rip Van Winkle). As paints in shades of purple were derived from fugitive pigments in that era, it's difficult to say what color the original confabulators actually were. The paint on surviving machines has decayed to a sort of mud-duck greyish-brownish-green. Heinrich says Wigmore, paint chemist for the Institute, recently ran an analysis, but his findings have been inconclusive.

That makes perfect sense. The Mushroom Moss Barge Oversight Committee was a
secretive affair, on account of security concerns, and meetings were held in locations
where eavesdropping would be difficult, if not impossible. KD was always invited for
his particular insight, as well as "One Tooth" Buckwalter, seen at right, with the hat.

Excellent detective work, Rich. I will tell Heinrich after they stop serving condiments.

Rich, that's fascinating. I had no idea. I was visiting with Sebastian just the other day about the movie stuntmen of the '40s and 50's. Interestingly, he told me Buckwalter was the father of at least one set of Doublemint Twins. No doubt it ran in the family ? (twice!) As for Hollywood stuntedmen, Herve Villachaize left his native France for "tinseltown" hopeful of finding work in that especiality, but soon found himself better suited to act in film and TV "short features".

This last photo made me want to go back and look at the picture of Dick's cat.
Rich B. said:
"There are many references in the record to KD's animal allergies, and none indicating that he ever owned pets, or any animals at all. If Kalamity Dick had owned a cat, it's most probable the creature would have drunk Happy Sally, and not champagne.

It's not that KD didn't like animals. He was fond of the animals Cuthbert "Mad Dog" Maddox owned through their long association, beginning with the fabled zebra dun mule, and on through many generations of dogs, cats, birds, horses, mules, burros and even the occasional individual from Maddox's small herds of sheep and cattle."

Now this is all going around in a circle. Cuthbert "Mad Dog" Maddox. Hmmmm? Was he the source for the Mad Dog 20 20 wine bottles that were repurposed for bottling Happy Sally?
And look at the dog in Richard E.'s picture. He does not look happy. Is he mad? And why is Sally happy? Someone help me! Inquiring minds want to know!

The dog in the photo was coerced into posing to make the Buckwalters look taller. She was a bit miffed and not treated to any Happy Sally. Clemmard had found the dog cowering in the narthex of the 23rd Street mill. Frightened my the machinery he had to coax her out from under the davenport.
Heinrich has a list of who supplied bottles, how many and what brand for bottling Happy Sally. It will be sent by Western Union to those interested.
As for the other questions I will refer them to the Lapendorfs.
Thanks again.

During the years of Protobation, a strong willingness of locals to help the H-S distillers
in any way they could arose like weeds in Grunda Fulpants' garden. Even Grunda herself
was an enthusiastic participant. The local constabulary largely played numb on the subject,
leaving only the Federal agents to be concerned about. This led to something quite unexpected.

"Mad Dog" got his nickname from this period, when, as an act of distraction, while being
pursued by the aforementioned Feds, took to leaping from his speeding car. This became
something of a sport between many of the drivers and delivery teams, and ultimately became
part of the Happy Sally Rodeo that is still performed at the fairgrounds during Chugwater
Regatta Week. Big Dick Hibbard holds the record of 21 Gold Cup titles. racked up between
1936 and 1961.

This action shot shows Big Dick doing a triple schmutz, while driver Leen Enmeeti scored
a double side roll, before correcting and pulling up to the grandstands. Both pegged the
landing. It was their highest scoring event ever.

Leen raised Skookums for the Orphans Home on Mildew Street.

One should note the "fish" image in the clouds beyond Big Dick. Many felt this was a sign
from God, while others noted the scent often encountered when Leen took off his boots.

While I can't comment on Cuthbert leaping from his car or the Happy Sally Rodeo we did find this 16mm footage of Kalamity Dick leaping from his Raceabout at speed. Sebastian is trying to run down the source of the film and the camera operator. Someone will surely know what incedent this was.

As the subject of stunt doubles has already been broached, further research indicates that during Perturbation (1919-1933) a notorious boot-legger named Irwin Caltrop used his uncanny resemblance to Cuthbert (Mad Dog) Maddox to elude local law officers and federal agents bent on enforcing the Volsted Act. Adopting Maddox's dress and mannerisms, he would blatantly be seen leaping from a speeding auto in full view of pursuing officers. Caltrop knew Maddox would have an air-tight alibi as he seldom left his ranch in those years, and the testimony of his zebra dun mule was unimpeachable in the tri-burg area. Though Caltrop's escapades added cachet to the "Mad Dog" nickname, actually, Cuthbert had been saddled with it long before he met Kalamity Dick. Seems on one occasion he had managed to calm a notoriously aggressive sheep-dog. As Maddox was well known to be an especially retiring and timid personality, the cowboys all thought it quite a joke to call him "Mad Dog". They would often terrify visiting dudes with made-up stories of his cut-throat brutality and hair-raising adventures, then laugh uproariously at their chagrin when Cuthbert entered Ernie's Saloon, sometimes carrying a stray kitten or puppy, and order a glass of milk. His gentle ways notwithstanding, Cuthbert was a fair rider and had stayed on not a few salty broncs in his youth. As for leaping from speeding automobiles, he never would have attempted it. He was one of the last in the tri-burg area to purchase one, and still preferred to travel horseback. He bought a well-used 1913 Model T runabout in 1932, and on the infrequent occasions when he did drive it, never went over 25mph. In spite of his tentative approach to the motorcar, Maddox was an enthusiastic devotee of the madcap antics performed in the auto segment of the annual Happy Sally Rodeo. He never missed a one !

Rich,

Many entries in the Tri-Burg news rags mention a "Cut Throat 'Mad Dog' Bullocks" as being
this wild man of crazy antics. Are we to assume this was the name that Caltrop used for casting
a long and amusing shadow of impossible irony upon the mild, and even boring Cuthbert Maddox ?

Heinrich says he's been contacted by Cuthbert's great niece Eufala, researching Cuthbert for an
upcoming book on the finer methods and practices of household dusting.

Heinrich took a break from boxing to ask if any of this esteemed research group can
shed light on the double hand crank side gun, credited to Kalamity Dick through a soiled
bar napkin with it's design, signed and dated by him. Mabel Pinkwart found the document
in Uncle Farkle's things after he passed. Uncle dearest said KD designed and built the
prototype for the Navy, for use on the Great White Fleet, and that 1000 were built and
installed.

The photo shows the wind up end as it waited in the Chugwater yards for shipment to
Boston. That's in Massachusetts.

Interesting to see all the onion cylinders laying about the yard.

"soiled bar napkin"? That is interesting. If we go back to a scene from the movie "The Saint Swithin's Day Massacre" we see such a sketch on a table. In trying to make the movie as accurate as possible they left no stone unturned.
You may recall the Pinkwart Family lived in a white house on Prazmatic Street made of Swiss Cheese.

Speaking of turning stones, the Pinkwarts were an odd family. They never bought groceries nor patronized local beaneries, but the whole family was, well, rather rotund. Shortly before their residence was condemned for rodent infestation, it became very uncomfortably drafty and cold in winter. Pa Pinkwort was often heard chastising his children, lining them up and demanding, "All right ! Now who cut the cheese this time ?"
Generally it was the mice who were at fault. The historic home was bull-dozed in the 1990s to make way for a "Chuck E. Cheese". Ironic isn't it ? Sad to think that relic of bygone days might have been saved by a few bars of "Irish Spring" if only they'd had the foresight.
Time for limbo practice !

Limbo practice ? How low can you go, Rich ?

Pa Pinkwart (whose real name was Paw Paw Pinkwart) was born in 1852 in a then
unsettled Chugwater Territory. As the legend goes, he was born without any skin,
and kept in a pickling urn, until the missing skin grew in. It was because of these
harsh beginnings that Pa Pinkwart made sure his family always had plenty of skin.

It is Pecker Pinkwart we see in the above photo, boxing with Heinrich. Pecker was
a helluva pepper picker. He piped his peppers to Paw Paw Pinkwart for pickling. In
the photo below, we see a more spry Pecker in the pepper pipeline, checking for
passage problems.

Well, it seems our research team is either off on holiday, or the Gunny is going
to have a field day when he catches up to those slackers !

Pecker Pinkwart had 12 brothers and 21 sisters, Mabel being just one of them.
Percival Pinkwart (Percy) was number 10 of 12, and had an early mechanical
aptitude for all things mechanical. They said he picked it up from Kalamity Dick,
who visited frequently. Heinrich informs that by the age of six, Percy held 47
patents for firearms design. Here, he shows off his latest work. It was often
said that Percy could shoot a snowflake off a barbwire point (from the hip) at
100 paces. A skill sorely needed around most university campuses today.

Perry, easily confused as Porkey and Percy were just one set in the ten pairs of twins in the Pinkwort family. Yes, Mabel was just one of the sisters, but Aspidistra Pinkwort counted as seven of them. She was known in the family as Ma Pinkwort's "miracle baby".

As mentioned Kalamity Dick visited the Pinkwart habitation quite frequently. He delivered tangerine, white peach and lychee along with the finest Gewurztraminer whenever he was in the county. It went well with the Swiss cheese. Along with giving Percy and Porkey shooting lessons and bringing the latest disc to play on the gramophone it made him one of their favorite guests. The girls would wash and polish the Raceabout in the creek in exchange for gingham scraps from the seamstress shop in Alcester.
He was second only to Santa Claus.

Is that Bob Fish in that barrel? I remember the county constable telling me about the great shootout they had when Bob Fish held up the grocery store and hid in the pickle barrel during the shootout. When he was finally captured the whole town talked about shooting Fish in a barrel.

It may be Travis Monackey. He used to shoot from a wooden drum like that and it was great sport to shoot back at him. That gave birth to the phrase "More fun than a barrel of Monackeys".
I believe Elrod Spaydaford was acting constable for the county at that time. Shaky Will Hickok had stepped down after the Worcestershire incident in the previous Police Week parade.

For many years, children in the tri-burg region were convinced that KD actually WAS Santa Claus. With his mysterious comings and goings, and legendary generosity, it certainly was plausible. Although KD's wide circle of friends and their high regard for him could have made KD a very successful figure in politics, he shunned the public arena like the plague. With one notable exception: when Elrod Spaydaford ran for constable at the end of Shaky Will's term, KD mounted to the podium at a political rally to denounce Elrod for having been a member of his brother Slug's outlaw gang, and his continued shady criminal activity long after Slug's band if cutthroats had disbanded.
On the strength of that short speech, voters went to the polls and unanimously elected Elrod's opponent. He received one vote, obviously his own.

Several times there were partitions circulated to run Kalamity for political orifice. The erectors certainly would have fenestrated him into pubic servex but he had no perspirations in that direction and declined each and every nomination.
Governing the masses and holy deadlock were not his callings. Inventing and cohantrication were his callings and he devoted his entire lifetime plus several other moments to it. It was a gift from beyond the grave and a tanfipulant inspiration for sure.
Perhaps Albert Einstein described him best when he said "Had he been twins one would have been much smarter than the other but never on the opposite train to Philadelphia".
I must agree.

Circulating participles and opposite trains aside, Mable was a darling child, with
plenty of skin and a penchant for the baroque.

I recently found an article about another interest that Kalamity had and that was he liked to paint. He became a regular Van Goo who like to dribble in paint. They say he developed this interest because of all the drawings he made for his inventions. I'll try to find my copy that I misplaced but perhaps someone else has seen it too and can post it.

This is said to be one of Kalamity's prints that Henry Ford liked so much that he painted his cars the same to honor Kalamity.

That painting has been the source of roaring controversy, ever since its creation,
as Kalamity did not name the color. Purists ever since have bickered and fought
over whether is it coal black, midnight black, really, really black, tar black, or any
other of a myriad of shade and tonal variations. When set to music, the battle grows
into a war.

One thing they always could agree on was brisket, with a tangy barbeque sauce.

Excited by the prospect of discovering works of art from KD's hand, Sebastian was greatly disappointed to learn that none of his paintings exist. While a mechanical genius, KD could be amusingly literal when out of his metre. When he essayed to begin painting pictures, he understood "oil colors" to be the varying hues of new and used petroleum lubricants. The result was paintings which were marvels of tonal study, owing to the limited Color palette, and equally limited range of color value, obvious in the example (Study in Black, 1919) shown above. Incidentally, it is not an original KD work, but a copy of KD's painting made the following year by an itinerant chimney sweep named Gaylord Fuzzle who was inspired by the original which he saw hanging above the back-bar in Ernie's Saloon.
The legendary heat wave of the summer of 1927 destroyed all of KD's oil paintings. Temps above 110F for three weeks caused all of them to drain from their canvases and pool on floors below, wherever they were displayed. If only they had been refrigerated, perhaps many could have been conserved.
For his part, KD was entirely unaware of the shortcomings of his "oil colors" as for him, painting was strictly a winter pastime.

Hi Wayne. The Kalamity Dick thread may be used as a barometer for gauging Cabin Fever. As the cold sets in and we can't get out to work on or drive our model Ts we turn our interests to other things. Much like my Uncle who operated a business in a tourist town, many tried to devise ways of measuring the flow of tourist traffic. Tracking sales or numbers of cars logged through the town were only guesses. He maintained that recording the numbers of gallons passing through the sewer lagoon at the treatment plant was probably the most accurate measurement.
I'm sure you can see a similarity there.
I will say that with 41935 views there must be some pretty odd folks out there somewhere.
Thanks for the comments and research from those with interest.

Re: OT - Adventures of Kalamity Dick - Fact or Fiction?

Rich fails to mention that his Uncle was a direct associate of Kalamity Dick, and
that they worked together to build the sewage lagoon in 1922, and the later enlargement
in 1947.

It was KD's idea, based on Uncle Erasmus's comments of seasonally waning tourist
traffic, that the sewage lagoon be made into a tourist destination of its own. KD had
a long history of sophomoric interest in explosives, perfecting his own recipe and method
of making things that go "BOOM!". Not having the time to pursue such matters himself,
he took the Pusboyle twins under his wing as apprentices and handed the business off
to them. And as everyone knows, the large presence of Pusboyle Industries around the
Tri-Burg area today is indicative of the success spawned by the three so many years ago !

But back to the story .... KD was deeply involved in a large contract sale of vestibules
to the National Park folks, when he met Uncle Erasmus on his way through town. KD had
a moment of connecting the dots, between the exposives development and the seasonal
tourist decline and proposed the creation of the sewage lagoon to draw in a year-round
traffic. The Chugwater & Northern was so impressed with the idea, they built a spur line
to the island left in the middle of the newly created body of water, and built the luxury
Skunkwater Hotel there. Tourism surpassed even those whose destination was the Park.
Fishing for Brown Mushies is a huge draw, even in winter.
More people are doing it today than ever before !

That photo brings back a lot of fond memories. Yes, Dick handed off a lot of enterprises to a lot of twins named Pusboyle, Itchenbottom and Stinyfoot over the years. It was his way of giving back for all his good fortunes.
A letter from Helen Keller praising him for his never-ending generosity still is taped to the side of the podium at the Institute.
"Brown Mushies"! You're making me esurient.

Wayne, please do grab the Victrola. I'm certain this topic qualifies for a new record, as I'm sure no other topic has ever appeared on these boards that has continually been at the top of the "current" posts for over two years running.

Rich, kudos to your uncle for his perspicacity. The correlation between effluents and the Institute's research efforts has not gone unnoticed. Heinrich, Sebastian, and the entire Institute staff are rather proud of the fact that the Institute's basement adjoins the water treatment plant, and the proximity has made for many valuable exchanges between the two entities.

As for brown mushies, it's well known that being esurient has motivated many insurgents. Not bad when properly seasoned !
