Re: Yet another puzzle
Herb's second vehicle appears to be an International Auto-Buggy - as opposed to Auto Wagons that have the stubby hood. They could be had with one, two or three seats.

With a French front? I do see by the frame/chassis how it's a Cadillac however.

Re: Yet another puzzle
You fellers amaze me !! I'm a very poor researcher. It seems the Olds T was still a curved dash "merry" Oldsmobile. I found one image of a Model N that appears to have a hood / front end like the one in the old photo, but I can't see details of the chassis. Coachwork on the Caddy Rich posted is quite different, but that doesn't mean much. The chassis is very much the same ! Thanks for "playing", I'm learning a lot from these puzzles !

Re: Yet another puzzle
Rich B.,
This is an Olds Model T.
The Curved Dash Oldsmobiles were models, R (1901 - 1903), 6C (1904), & B (1905 - 1906).

Jerry, I only know the misinformation I found on the interweb ! That's a good side view, the front end and front seat look more like the old photo. Is the jury still out ?

Re: Yet another puzzle
I'm sure Rich Eagle is correct in that it's a Cadillac. I probably just don't know enough about Cadillacs, (and lots of other stuff too ), to know of a French Front example.Rich P. What's visible of the Olds in the photo you posted sure doesn't look like the Cadillac chassis. I believe Rich nailed it - again !

Re: Yet another puzzle
I don't claim to be a Cadillac expert or that of any other make. All I can do is offer what I think I see in these photos. I knew that the photo I posted was not the same body style and might raise questions. This 1902-1908 Cadillac Single Cylinder booklet shows that there were 9 different Models of Cadillac. Most were open runabouts or Touring cars. The first models look almost exactly like a 1903 Model A Ford. Then there was a box front and later variations of a front similar to the Madel C Ford. I haven't ever seen a Frenc Front Cadillac and don't think I see one in Rich's photo.
I have been around a few of them and noticed the stepped frame near the crank hole and the associated spring mounts and radius rods. Also, the step plate.
I was surprised when I saw my first hood on a single-cylinder Olds too. When did I do that?

Re: Yet another puzzle
This is what I believe we are seeing behind those Foreign Headlights. Left is a Model E and Right is a model F. Both are 1905 I believe.
The door to the tanks under the hood and wing nuts, the rail above the dash and the lower apron and radiator can be seen. I believe there are the same. When did I do that?

Re: Yet another puzzle
This might be a good place to tell what little I know about those French Front Oldsmobiles. This one was on the St. George 1&2 Tour in about 1985. It was a rear entrance car as were several including some Cadillacs and Fords.
A similar hood and rail as the Cad.
One key difference in Olds cars is their full-length leaf spring units on either side of the car.
The brass lever is the spark advance which covers the crank hole when advanced to prevent back firing.

Re: Yet another puzzle
Rich, thank you much for posting those photos. Delightful to see ! And very instructive vis-a-vis the "puzzle". I'm amused to learn of the Oldsmobile's full length leaf springs. Some of Studebaker's high-end horse-drawn light vehicles used that design in the same era. It would be interesting to know for sure whose idea it was !

That's a good one. I don't recognize it, but it looks like a steam car. I'll do some digging. I hope someone knows.

Re: Yet another puzzle
I can't see how the full length springs would do much for ride quality, but they would provide a very strong and flexible chassis, which would be good with a mid-engined car. That wouldn't explain their use on a horse drawn vehicle, unless it had a very heavy body mounted in the middle of a long wheelbase running gear.

Re: Yet another puzzle
Thanks Jerry, I learn a lot from these conversations and the searches for photos. It's a great way to spend time. After collecting stuff for years, it's fun to go back at look at things and share the info with others who may enjoy it too. Here are some cuts from that instruction book.
I'm happy you are finding time to guess along too. What could be more fun?

French Renault taxicab, one of the famous ' taxis de la Marne" who were commandeered to transport troops to the front in 1914. (French postage stamp in the right upper corner seems to heave a 1915 date stamp, hard to make out for sure)

Re: Yet another puzzle
It looks like a 1910 Buick Model 17 Touring to me. The NY plate would be likely a 1910 (white on black) or perhaps a 1911 (white on maroon).
The photo makes the radiator look a bit wider. When did I do that?
