My First Car
In 1958, when I was in high school, we bought a new family car. It was a Volvo PV444 and my friends thought it was pretty cool. In 1960, my grandparents died and my dad inherited their 1956 Chrysler Windsor. The more luxurious Chrysler with its pushbutton transmission and power everything was more to my dad's liking, so it became the family car. My senior year in college, Dad let me take the Volvo to school with me and when I graduated, it became my graduation gift. Wish I had it now....

Re: My First Car
Cool Ride!
Imagine actually owning a 32 year old Antique Car. I mowed lawns all Summer to get $200 for this Model A. It served me well for 16 years and I sold it for a down payment on my present home. Restored it sold for $6,000 in 1978. It was the best education a kid could have.

When did I do that?

Re: My First Car
My first car (in '65) was a '61 Skoda Octavia. Kind of cute in a late 50's small car kind of way. The major challenge was that while a few were imported to Canada none were imported to the USA. Well that and the one guy in Seattle that had a few parts had John Birch Society posters on the walls and would curse me for supporting the Communists. While a good little car when I had it, it met a sad end when my college roommate rolled it down a gravel road. I actually wouldn't mind having one again, more a novelty than anything else now.

Re: My First Car
I can't post in this off-topic thread. My first car was a Model T Ford, a 42 year old antique in 1962. What Rich said - it was a wonderful education !! (and how I came to meet Rich E. )
Anyhow, a 1987 model neither seems antique, nor has any of the appeal Rich's Model A had for me back then. What happened ?? Am I the only one who says "- meh" for cars made after 1940 ?

Re: My First Car
My first car was a truck. I was about 16 when I found it in a barn and first drove it 32 years later. Hard to find parts for a 1925 Indiana Truck.
First car that I count as a real complete car that I could drive was the 1968 Mustang my parents bought new here in town at the local Ford dealer. I remember sitting in the back seat on that first test drive and when I was old enough to drive it became mine. Still got them both but a lot of cars have come and gone since.

Give an old car guy a barn and he won't throw anything away.

Re: My First Car
My first car was a truck, 1946 Dodge flat head , 1 ton that I bought from Don Kraft our neighbor for 75$ summer of 1973. He bought it new right after the war for their farm. Needed glass and seat recovered. I drove it when I was a Senor in High School and first year of Community Collage. Don is gone and so the the truck. Sad about Don but sometimes I wish I had it back.
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

Re: My First Car
Never understood the 1940's styling on late 50's cars like Rambler and most of the
European cars had. I wanted something long and sleek, like something George Jetson
or Perry Mason would drive. I am the guy who donesn't get rid of things, just cuz ... Still have my Stingray bike,
my skateboard, and my first two cars.

More people are doing it today than ever before !

Re: My First Car
My first car was my grandpa's after he wasn't able to drive anymore. A 1967 Toyota Corrolla,
looked like the typical car in a Godzilla movie
Had a 2 speed, like a Powerglide, with reverse all the way down. I did reverse rollbacks and held it wide open, then hit low gear and could do a nice burnout...after the trans went I traded, eventually ending up with a 54 Chevy Bel-Aire.

Re: My First Car
My first car was a truck too.
When I got home from Korea in 1966 I bought a 1953 Willys Jeep with a 283 Chev engine. You could put it in 4WD and low and it would idle up the steepest hill.

Re: My First Car
My first car was a 1962 Chevy II Nova 6 cyl 2 dr. I bought it from my brother in 1972 for $125. He said it would go 90 MPH so when I left the beer party I decided to see how fast it went. I was just about at top speed when I caught up to my friend who left before me. He was stopped because of 3 deer on the road, my brakes were bad and needed pumping so I turned hard to the left. I went by him sideways skidding all 4 tires, ended up rolling over in the ditch. My next car was a 1955 Chevy 2 dr, I rolled that car in 1973. I have not rolled a car since.
