I still have the '23 Stanley, but today a truck dropped off a friend off:

what is it? At first glance I thought it was a Model T, but the front does not look like a T and it has eliptical springs. I don't recognize what it is.

It's a 1910 Stanley Model 70. It needs some TLC, but I hope to be touring with it next summer.

Be careful you don't get burnt!

Most steam cars use liquid fuel for external combustion. When everything goes per plan, they are fine. But there are several ways for things to go wrong and put fuel in the wrong place. Liquid fuel in the wrong place and a source of ignition can make for some spectacular fires. Most of which are actually low risk. Understanding how everything works and being careful is a requirement, but sometimes freak accidents occur. I was really sad to hear Mr. Leno was hurt. I don't know the details of exactly what happened, but he knows what he was doing, so I assume it was an unfortunate combination of events.

I know Jay Leno drove Brent Campbell's Stanley up Mt Washington. Billy Barnes joined on that trip with one of his steamers. Jay may have driven other vehicles up the road, but I am not aware of a T doing it. Climbing Mt Washington is a thing with Stanley people trying to re-live the Stanley brothers doing it in August of 1899. In addition to climbint Mt Washington in 1899, a Stanley set the land speed record in 1906 at 127 MPH.

When running well, operating a steam car is a wonderful experience. They are a lot of work to keep running well though...

Thanks for posting those.
I'm sure Mr. Leno has plenty of knowledge of steam cars. Being a celebrity puts any mishap in the news. Operating cars that are on fire has its risks.
Brent Campbell was a wonderful guy. He let me drive the green Big 1911 Stanley he and Ole Vikre used to drive on tours out West one time (1990). It was a trill of a lifetime and nearly convinced me to seek out one. I know Ole isn't with us anymore but haven't heard of Brent lately. I hope he is well and still enjoying Steam. The steam car crowd was so kind and delightful.

I am very sorry to say Brent passed. It was a giant loss of a good man in the steam community.

I thought that might be the case. So many of the greats lived in the heyday of steam touring. Time marches on. I have a lot of video from those tours that I need to get on YouTube when I figure out how.

attach to your computery then run the video through it. That gets the video in "computer" format.
I bought (online download) 'Cyberlink power director' as the best cost-benefit video editor, and spent a few evenings figuring out how to use it. Might be other "better" systems, but I picked what was affordable at the time (a few years ago now) and 'easy' to use.
I have found it makes the conversion and editing very easy, and you can add a voice over if you feel inclined.

Just the thing to fill those long winter evenings

Is this one of the 2 Stanleys I saw sitting side-by-side, for sale at Hershey this year?

This car wasn't at Hershey. I know of a 1911 Model 70 that went for auction there, and another Model 70 that was a private sale. I spent a weekend helping the guru Howard Johnson get the one that went for auction back under steam before it was shipped to Hershey. The private sale one was a stunning ready to go restoration. Almost too nice to drive, and I'm all about driving them.

This one will take a little doing to get back under steam. It ran when parked, but has been parked for 17 years so it needs a bit of a going through before recomissioning it. I plan to have it on tour next year.

The guys at AmmoNYC did a real nice job cleaning it up so I can concentrate on the mechanical end.
