Seems to me he and the missus had the best of vast old wealth, fame, privilege, and privacy available on this planet. Security, multiple secure, private estates, titles, lavish wealth, travel, tradition, youth, health, etc, etc, etc. If they want to go to Soweto and flip bedpans for the rest of their lives, they're free to do so. If they'd quit squalling, the media would soon grow bored and seek out new victims. They can completely escape the monarchy without tearing it down, if they actually want to.

The Westminster system of democratic government requires a head of state for a variety of functions, many seemingly ceremonial, but actually of great import to the proper and correct running of government. "The Homeless" would quickly demolish the royal properties, to no purpose whatsoever.
"The Monarchy" is a substantial asset to what remains of Great Britain.
