What do we have here?

We've been working on a deceased club members estate 'stuff' for his widow and came across two of these. With all the 'ole guys' (and younger knowledgeable guys) in the club, none have been able to come up with what we have. They are Brass, plated, have a 'JAPAN' stamped on clip. They are about 2" across, with a 3/4" to 7/8" opening with a screw on lid.

It's a palette cup for oil painting. Clips on the artist's palette and holds a painting "medium" - oil, turpentine, or a resin varnish.

My pleasure Ross. Those cups made in Japan were popular up to the early 60s, and are nicely made. Similar items are a rarity these days. Someone may greatly appreciate it !
