Caption states: winner of the Empire City 100 Mile Race, H.J. Koehler, driver of the Buick. October 27, 1906.

Seeing this, I immediately thought of Rich Eagle, who restored an ‘06 Buick. I’ll bet he can tell us more about the car.

Thanks for posting this, Rich. I haven't seen that one before. I see that "Mr. H.J. Koehler in a stripped 2-cylinder Buick in completion of 100-mile race .... won first place in 2 hrs, 5 min, 35 seconds defeating 11 contestants". The car appears to be built on a Model C chassis, 1903-1905.
At left is a Model C. At right is My Model G. The C has a radiator under a false shell with screen. Both have the coffee pot gas tank which I find totally delightful to see. Mine is shown here. I was pleased that I could clean it down to its original galvanized finish. The C racer has the tank mounted farther forward with a water tank for the radiator mounted to its rear.

Even more amusing is the photo of a modified tank taken by a Buick friend in Berlin. It seems the tank has been modified with a vintage Dupont thinner can. I sent Helmet measurements of height per gallon taken from my tank so he could calculate the proper shape to restore his. As in the T world, we meet wonderful folks from all over the planet.
Finding my Buick opened up a whole new experience to me and supplements my love for the Model T quite nicely.

FWIW, what we are seeing in the old photo are the front cylinder and rockers and above that the oiler. To the right of the oiler is the timer. The red thing in this photo is a cover for the flywheel and at left the planetary transmission. The brass carburetor is a Schebler. Ther are 3 pedals like a Model T but in different order.
